Topic: War, blood, and well done action.
I think people are losing a lot of what gundam is these days. It was a series designed as a war drama, it was built around action and emotion.

People these days are trying too much to develop the characters. Always worrying about what's going on in their heads at the time. I think this is the death of a fan-fic. Holding true to a character is a good thing, but making every emotion they have an overwrought experience is killing me.

What happened to action people, when did that leave the equation? It's giant robots, they fight, it's that simple. So why exactly is everyone forgeting that? We need more mech action, and we need it done well. This is gundam damn it!

So, anyone have thoughts on integrating more action into the overly emotional plots? Balance things out maybe? The story can't move forward if all the characters are too busy lamenting.

The war should be what the drives the story line of the characters. That was what made the original series so amazingly good. Amuro would have stayed a whiny little brat if it weren't for the One Year War, for example.

I think a lot of writers, including the writers for the Gundam franchise, are getting bogged down in the idea that the characters have to be semi-tortured, overly-angsty teenagers. The whole idea behind the original series was that the characters couldn't be that and expect to survive; they had to be adults. But even a lot of the adults in the series now day are whining about petty relationships and crushes and it's really gotten old.

This is so damn true it's not even funny. Angst, god damn it always seems to suck. I wrote a character who literally lost everything, and has gone somewhat crazy due to that fact, and he hardly even makes mention of it. It's one thing to be a bit broken up over things every now and then, it's entirely another to never shut up about it.
