ChisisTopic: The trouble with TRC fanfiction Since this is a forum devoted to writing and such, I figured a section on what NOT to do would be helpful to those who want it. What are some of the things authors are doing now that are a tiny bit annoying, if anything? What sort of advice could help with the writing process? Pet Peeves? Annoying character stereotypes? I, for instance, think that there needs to be some more inventive story lines and a deeper understanding of the characters. Now I do consider the fact that TRC is relatively new, and this section has basically exploded when compared to others, but still. There are extremely talented authors here that seem to only do one-shots for fear of writing a full story. Anyone else's thoughts? |

LuinramwenI'll offer some... I suppose. I spend a lot of time in this section, and I agree fully with you: there needs to be more variety in the storylines. I personally find that there are far too many KxF fanfics - which wouldn't be a problem, even if I don't personally support the pairing, if people didn't just use the fanfic as an excuse for them to kiss/have sex/whatever, with little to no plot besides that, and a summary that sounds very similar to five or six other fanfics. If you're going to write a story, plot is a very important concern... oh, as well as characterization. The b@$t@^dization of the characters really gets to me. Fai is usually either completely and utterly flaky/a uke/both, with him sobbing despondently one moment and flaking out like the most flamboyant gay the next, with no regard for canon!Fai at all, who while admittedly has some leanings in both directions, is NOT distinctly either. Also dislike fics that have Kurogane going all sloppy and gushy for no reason at all, at least that I can discern. OK, yes, I know he's got a good heart under all that and he really does care for his companions, but I think people should stop a moment and remember how Kurogane actually tends to express himself. Oh, and also Sakura. She's in most stories, true, but except for in the pure-through SxS stories, she's pretty much only ever there as little more than a prop. Admittedly she sleeps a lot early in the series, but honestly, that's pushing it a little too far. Same with Syaoran, who tends to be little more than a prop in most stories. Most stories, generally, being the KxF ones who are more concerned with *that* than any characterization of those two. OK, yes, neither are quite as cool in this series as they were in CCS, but still, that doesn't give you any excuse to ignore them. (This is partly a rant against myself, too; I tend to not write fics that include them very much, but I *am* trying to change that...) More authors with a deeper understanding of the characters would be choice. Man, would it ever be! I would love more than anything to see a lot of these fanfics revised and edited to take actual canon and characterizations into account - but then I suppose in that case that some stories might die an 'untimely' death and wither away into nothing. OOC is OK *sometimes*, but I find that that generally works best in a humour/parody situation where you're not meant to take it seriously at all. Not all the time, everywhere. And yes. We do have a lot of one-shot authors. I know, I'm guilty of being one of them. I have an excuse. I don't want to get involved in a longer fic, not because I'm scared of writing something longer, but because I'm scared that if I write something longer I'm going to get more involved with that than in my schoolwork, and flunk out of university. As it is, I already spend far too much time on fanfiction as opposed to actually working. | #2 Oct 09th 2006, 12:19pm | |

Sakura-Angel2My top pet peeve, especially in this fandom, is character bastardization. Sure Fay has his angsty moments, but I doubt he's the type to lament over why Kurogane doesn't love him or something. As Chisis says, a deeper understanding of the characters is necessary to write good fanfiction - be it multichaptered or oneshot. I rarely see any good character introspection. Then again it could just be me, seeing as I love a good character study, ha ha. |

crypticallyWhat bothers me is the poorness of style and lack of originality. Granted, the plot is fairly fluffy to begin with, but you can still do some pretty creative things with it, regardless. I think the problem is that the people who write moderately okay get a lot of praise because they update, while the excellent writers sometimes don't get enough. Just my thoughts. :3 |

ChisisI think though that in order for there to be good writers, there also need to be good critics. Critics that review stories and give out actual advise, rather than the simple "you misspelled this," and "I think that was OOC" . The FFnet critic is nonexsistant, and therefore writers have no parameters to organize their thoughts. It is the critics job to assume the role of an everyday reader and to explain to the writer what works and what does not work. Having no real critics means that there is a lack of quality, for though I hate the self-rightious critics that push their own agenda, critics do tend to lead to a self evaluation of ones work. And what better critic there is than someone who is a writer themselves? A writer understands the author's needs and can play to their strengths, but also understands the difficulty of recieving such advise. The writer-critic could become a powerful force here in TRC, for unlike other groups, the TRC fandome has specific thoughts and history that they can look back on. For TRC, we not only have all of the best of TRC fanfiction, but also CCS fanfiction, and everything else connected to the series. Therefore, standards should be high. |
