Topic: OC Name game
Is it just me, or is finding a name for an OC really hard? Here's where we play the name game.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, honestly. What's the 'name game'?

Sorry, in-joke between me and the other two. It's basically a way to get around any difficulties with names, for names, places or just random things. There's wordplay, just jotting down a word because it sounds nice and naming your character that name. My favourite example of this is Mantequilla (butter in spanish). My friend changed it a bit. Her OC is called Mantecilla.

When I invented Mycenae, I just typed in a random series of letters that looked like it could be a word,(like this Mylantanes) then used spellcheck. Much later, I found out that Mycenae is a city in greece, or at least it was. I'm not so sure.

Then there are baby name website, which I use alot. Lot's and lots of websites, and sometimes I still use an online dictionary. Tesia is a name meaning one who works the earth, while Bijin is Japanese for beautiful person (woman). I've used both.

And then there's poetic irony, like Catalina for a girl who can turn into a cat...

Any other ways to get around name block? Or just great names that came to you in a flash?

Yeah, I use baby naming web sites whenever I need names, or just pull one out of thin air.

For my OC ranger team story (Power Rangers Spirit Strikers) I was lost on a name for a Pink Ranger, so I just searched names that had to do with pink. I do it for original stories, too.

Most people I know think I'm weird when I do that, but it helps.

Yes, but I sometimes find that the names on the websites I use...

Well, they don't fit the character I've got in my mind. So I have to use other tricks. Besides, it's hard naming planets if you do an 'In space' story. I was tempted to call my planet pluto, I was so stuck.

Naming planets? There was a problem for me in an original story. But, I just did what others did. I took the name of a god/goddess, and then I turned it backwards. Or, you can go with KO-(insert number here). That's what I did for an old story I once had up.

I didn't know that trick, thanks for sharing! I won't have to beat my brains out in an attempt to name a planet/city/town/aztec city/country ever again!

You're welcome. Oh, and I know this is a little off topic, but you were having a problem with Emma's major? Try a forign language teacher, secretary, or travel agent. Sorry, I just thought I'd help you out with that a little, if you didn't get help.

THANK YOU! Now I can do what I planned, and have her be at college after CD2D. She'll have to take a little time out to save the universe until then...

And just to let you know, you're the only person who helped who didn't say something along the lines of her old life, eg...

Police woman

FBI/CIA/MI6/SECRET SERVICE Agent

Astronaut

Ambassedor (I think Ice Fata was tired)

and don't foget... Wonder Woman.

Those are only some of the ideas Ice Fata came up with. My brother came up with some slightly more sensible ones. Not much, but slightly more sensible.

I do all of those things ecxept the random letter and spell check thing. I'll have to try that. Normally I come up with the character and then use her traits to find the perfect name. Sometimes I take two names that I like and combine them. Like in an NSYNC story I wrote A LONG TIME AGO I combined Camilla and Tammi and came up with Tammila. or I think of a nickname and then base a name off of that. Like I had a character once and I thought it would be cool if people called her Del and the only name that really went with that was Delia, and I had this other character I wanted people to call Indy so I named her Independence.

If I'm creating ranger children I pick a name that sounds good with a certain last name. Oh yeah, and in The Return when I had to come up with a last name for Zhane and Xander I used the spanish word for Silver (Plata).

If you're working with second generation OCs (like if andros and ashley had a kid or something), it's helpful to sometimes combine the names of the parents,or find similarities between the two names and pick a name that is similar in the same way.

Another thing that I do, especially if I'm creating a brother or a sister, I use another name and kind of go with the tone of that one. Like in my Story "Just Like Dad" I created a sister for Carter, and his name is very conservative and traditional so I named his sister Leslie. Or in an old Harry Potter Story I created a sister for Sirius Black and I named her Vivian. It's kind of the same with Ranger children. Personalities of the parents should be considered. Like Kim and Jason would probably pick very simple traditional names where as Andros and Ashley would pick names that were a little more out there (But not too out there because in my oppinion Ashley wouldn't like it, lol).

P.S. is anyone besides me having Document Manager issues? I haven't been able to post anything for four days and it's getting really annoying.

I thought I had pulled some names out of thin air before, but then I saw one in the title of a book, and the other one on a baby name site, which is usually where I get the names anyway. Now I have lists of favorite names.
