Topic: 3.12: One Day One Room
I thought this episode was a nice break from the formula, and I know many people had differing reactions to it, but I thought we could discuss it anyway.

This was supposed to be a character study of House and Cameron, I think, and I believe myself and many other people saw parallels between the patients of each and the characters themselves, which I think was extremely interesting - I like layers and onions. :)

What did people think?

I actually really liked Cameron's little...bit in the episode, with her cancer patient and all - I thought that was a nice little comparison between Autopsy and the present.

However...like I said, maybe I'm too used to the formula, but I really disliked his episode. That kid...girl, thing, whatever, she was so annoying! Oh my goodness, we got that she didn't know anything after the first few minutes, but they had to keep reminding us the whole way through.

However, nice little insight into House's life (although I think I figured out his secret from the *ads*. They were advertising about a rape girl, and they were advertising about House's secret (therefore, equals House secret is abuse of some sort (though, yes, my mind did kinda leap to rape)) and because I knew he hated his dad (or had some kind of bad relationship with him anyway) I figured it was him. Subconsciously, at least). I liked the Oma quote "She was still Dutch. And she was still my grandmother."

But anyway.

Yeah, I liked Cameron's bit too - I just think that maybe it was shunted to the side a little in light of House's patient. I think this was a side of House we all needed to see - I don't think it excuses his behaviour, just factors in - caring, yet not. And Cameron is SO right, he DOESN'T suck at this type of thing - he just wants to, which is worse I guess.

My favourite lines were:

Wilson: Is this a roleplay? Am I you? I don't want to be you!

Chase: Tell her ... keep her asleep.

And I loved the room metaphor, and the 'I want someone to remember me'manipulative speech.

Oh, and when Chase went "You, wanting to believe that romantically, isn't going to make it happen" my sister and I went 'OUCH' and 'BURN' respectively. Gee Chase, cool down mate!!

This was a nice break from the formula. I also really liked the different insight into House, though I'm not sure if I believe him when he said it was his Dad. It might still have been a ploy to get her to talk, knowing House. Maybe he'd open up to someone like that, especially after the 'rooms' speech, but it just seemed a bit OOC to me.

Thoughts?

I liked the episode a lot and thought it was really believable that he would open up and tell this secret only to a "stranger" he will probably never see again. Who thinks the writers planned the abuse storyline all along or just cobbled it together to explain their guy? It is sort of cliche - anyone with an attitude must have something like this in their past...

This is definately one of my favorite House episodes. Of course, it stands out because it breaks the formula, but I think it's great because it breaks the formula without breaking character rules.

Cameron's bit was good. The parallel was good. But I LOVED House's part. Yes he opened up, and of course opening up is generally considered out of character for House, but I don't think it is in this situation.

Wilson previously referred to House as not having a Messiah Complex, but a Rubiks Complex - he has to solve the puzzle. He butts heads with Eve the whole episode because of this. He can't just ignore her and let it go because when she inexplicably tries to kill herself - if you will, a symptom of the rape - she moves out of the 'annoying patient' category and into the 'puzzle' category. The difference with this puzzle is that, where House is usually beating his head against a wall to figure out the underlying condition based on the symptoms and the appropriate treatments, with Eve he already knows the underlying cause but he can't figure out the treatment.

That considered, I think it is perfectly in character for House to open up to her as a means to finish the puzzle, if you agree with Wilson's assertation that his need to solve the puzzle overrules all else. I think "No Reason" is a perfect example, in which House is willing to go as far as to potentially kill a patient for the sake of figuring out if he's hallucinating or not - which, though he does it very snarkily and House-like, is completely out of character for House, who generally regards saving the patient above all else, including laws.
