Basically, this is proved by Season 2 eps 11 and 13.

In ep 13, it's proved that a very significant portion of his pain is psychological, by Cuddy giving him the placebo, and in ep 11, after being with Stacy, he was all hyped and happy. I'm not saying that he experciences no physical pain from the big hole in his leg, but House/anyone love could alleviate a big part of the pscyological pain.
