The story I've misplaced (thought I had faved it, but it must have been one of those nights when ff.n was giving me trouble) was a single-chapter tag for Progeny, though I'm not sure it was labeled as such. It starts off with Rodney in the Atlantis gateroom (either just stepped through, or just regained consciousness). Weir starts talking to him, and he realizes there's something wrong with her--she's someone else disguised as Weir. She reveals that she is an ascended Ancient (he guesses Oma Desala), and she tells him he's on the cusp of death, and is being offered ascension by means of the mental construct he's currently experiencing. If he demonstrates that he's ready to let go of his former life by inputting Atlantis' self-destruct code within the construct, he will ascend. Otherwise, he will be returned to realtime to die--along with all of his friends.

Freaking out about the death thing, and suspicious about the offer--since he's so anti-spiritual--Rodney needs some convincing. Grodin, Gaul, and Griffin each appear in turn (pretty sure it was those three) and basically tell McKay that he should let go of his doubts and guilt, and ascend.

My recall about exactly how the scene ends is pretty hopeless, but when Rodney emerges from the mental construct, it turns out it was actually the Replicators feeding him the illusion--it was his form of the mental interrogation the Atlantean team all experienced in that episode. So when McKay says his experience was "torture–-in ways too hideous and intimate to recount," he was referring to being confronted by those men whose deaths he felt responsible for, and being given a chance to live on, but no chance to save the others.

So, never mind, I guess! *eyeroll*...but if anyone else has a fic that needs finding, perhaps this thread will find its usefulness.... ^^

It's a pretty old one, I'm sure it must be over a year since I've seen it. It was a story about Sheppard's past before he came to Atlantis. None of the other characters are in and I think it starts with him deciding to join the military. I remember it includes some high school buddy who goes a little nuts and a girl too and some bits with his parents. It was pretty long and involved and very good. That's all I can really remember.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please reply!

In this fic John and Mckay are in a Jumper when it crashes in to the side of a mountain. John is very badly hurt and will pretty much need mckay to carry him out or he will die. Mckay builds a Travoice to help get sheppard to the gate. It takes days to get there. I think that it was called "there and back again" but i can not find it in search
