Foolish MortalTopic: General Discussion I finished reading the first book (my bookstore doesn't have any of the other ones, damn them) and I absolutely loved it! I think it has a lot of the same texture as Trudi Canavan's Black Magician Trilogy. I've been calling the bookstore to pester them about when the next shipment of books will come in. I think they're scared of me... Sooo, you people would probably know a lot more about this series than I, so feel free to post your own topics. (P.S. What does it mean to 'pin' a topic. Is it a new feature?) | #1 Jun 09th 2006, 9:18am . Edited Jun 09th 2006, 9:20am

LeianoraI'm in the middle of the second book. I blew $76 on them because I wanted them in audio format. This is yet another reason why being blind sucks, I can't read the paper back books. Oh well... from what I've heard so far, they're really great! Actually, Mardus and Ashnazai are creeping me out! I don't think I've ever met such villainous characters in a series before. |
|
LuciverWow, I've only read the first book...but being the impatient idiot I am, I PEAKED at the 2nd and 3rd books (which I bought but haven't found time to crack open yet) and..they look great. Alec is so naive sometimes when it comes to Seregil. 'Father Brother Friend and Lover' had me smiling like a cheshire (sp...?) cat. |
|
Foolish MortalWhat do you mean by peaked?I love Alec. He is SO my guy (if he weren't...Seregil's...) Yeah, I was grinning like a Cheshire cat too. I know that it's a very emotional scene but did anyone else think that scene in bk. 2 (THE scene. Not the one at Watermede, the one in Plenimar) is a little TOO emotional? Is it because the author is a woman? |
|
LuciverHeh, -rubs head- peaked was a typo ^_^; Meant 'peeked.'Anyways, finished the second one and haven't really gotten off my lazy bum to read the third one yet. But, I'd have to disagree with you on that 'too emotional' scene. I thought it lacked depth or realism. Alec FINALLY admits he loves him, and Seregil, without skipping a beat just basically says, "Ditto, anyways, blah blah blah." I was left with a kind of 'that's it?' feeling. But maybe I was spoiled by Mercedes Lackey's 'Heraldmage' Series. All those confessions of undying love and talk of soul mates and suicide and such, really have raised the bar, hah. | #5 Jul 30th 2006, 11:58pm

Foolish MortalHmm, Heraldmage? (My library is suffering from a paucity of Mercedes Lackey) What's the series about? You know Leianora, your screenname kind of reminds me of Lenora from "Of Two Minds" |

LeianoraThe series you're talking about is very angsty. It's about a boy who is the heir to a very rich estate where horses are bread. He is told that he will soon be required to go to the capital of the kingdom to get an education. He is to live with his Aunt, a lady who also happens to be a harald mage, similar to a cop and a magician combined. One of her trainees falls in love with the boy, and he returns the favor, quite intensely. The angst of the series is incredible, and it has a bitter/sweet ending. |

Foolish MortalI do love angst now and then. It rescues me from the cesspool of sappy scenes and happy endings. What do you mean "horses are bread"? Like, they eat the horses? Um, I meant the scene in Plenimar where all Alec weeps a lot. It's when he first kisses Seregil. I KNOW he has been through torture both physical and psychological and he thought Seregil was dead and all that but I KNOW Alec's strength and calm. He is just so exhausted in the book from running away from Irtuk Beshar but somehow all his emotion didn't make him very real to me. I think I'd have to agree with you about the Watermead scene, though I did enjoy it so when Alec threw Seregil into the water and yelled at him. | #8 Oct 02nd 2006, 12:39pm .
