entercreativenameTopic: Medical Research This topic was brought up briefly at TWoP. How much medical research do you do when writing a House fic? Where do you start? What sites do you use? Also, awesome, comprehensive, and easy-to-access and understand site to add to the research list: http://www.fpnotebook.com/index.htm | #1 Oct 24th 2006, 11:16pm

DruDepends. If the medical stuff is going to be the focus (Like my and my friends Chase concussion fic, or my Mpreg fic) then a LOT of research. Hell I could be a OB after all the reading I've done on pregnancy... If it's just going to be in passing, (like a brief "It's drugs damnit!" "It's Lupus!") I'll fudge it. I Google. Lots and lots of googleing. Sometimes weeks of research. I try to at least have it so it's not glaringly wrong. Sometimes I might, for the sake of drama (Hey the show does it too), write something not quite right but I try to be as close to the truth as possible.| #2 Oct 24th 2006, 11:39pm

bookgodess15One of my favorite things to do is research, so of course writing a House fic just seems like heaven to me. I suppose sometimes, I might do a bit more than is necessary... but seriously, it's so much fun. Specifically for House fanfics, I absolutely love the site www. wrongdiagnosis .com, which gives you not only symptoms and causes and other general information, but it also gives you what it can possibly me mistaken for (all of House's faulty ideas)... along with a few other things that are just perfect when writing a House fic. I trust Wikipedia to some degree... generally, for information such as pills and drugs, I like www. healthsquare .com, because it gives you not only what the medicine is used for, but the typical doses, pictures of the pills, descriptions of what happens if you OD on it (very useful for Vicodin)... Amazing. I love the internet. |

CatWoman4EverI do tons of research if it is required for the story I am writing. For example, some stories have no medical needs to be attended to when I'm writing. But if I get into a story or chapter that has a lot of medical terminology I do my best to make it as accurate as possible. I have a million medical books, so I usually just use those as my resources. I don't delve into using the internet too much. I also spend some time to watch an episode of House or two to examine the moods of the characters during certain situations (e.g. patient having a seizure). I carefully analyze each character to make sure that when I'm writing I can stand in their shoes and tell something from a point of view that they'd take. I try to keep each person in character and do their character justice. It's a long process, but when it produces a great fic that you can be proud of, it's worth it. |
