Topic: The wonderful world of Disney

In this fourm you are welcome to come here and discuss a series that has touched the hearts of children everywhere with its magic. You can talk about the movies, the characters, best and worst (in your opinion) etc.

It's similar to general conversation but it's a themed topic. There is one rule:

NO DISSING.

You are entitled to your opinion but please keep it clean.

So to warm things up, here's a question.

What was your favorite (animated or live-action) Disney movie?

Akira Shinji

Hmm...hard question. When I try to think of a favorite, the only one that comes to mind is Mulan.

On the other hand, if you had asked what our favorite Disney animation in general was, well that's an entirely different story...X3

A meme forum, this will be fun.

My favorite movie is Pocahontas, despite of the movie being historically inacurate you can't help but love the movie. The romance between John and Pocahontas is bittersweet, if you watched the special edition version of the film you can't help but cry from watching this scene. Also sugar ti- I mean Mel Gibson knows how to sing. I hate the sequel because it sort kills the first film for some reason. Another movie I like is Lilo and Stitch, cuteness mixed with Hawaii, family, and Elvis it's like an paradise themed drink for the whole family.

For me it would be Pirates of the Caribean 3, hands down. The fight scenes, the choreography, the characters, the overall story. It had my eyes glued to the screen.

My favorite Disney movie with a princess would be Sleeping Beauty. One of favorite ones would be the Lion King. I can't believe Disney showed us an on-screen death in that one. I was very little when I first saw this in theatres and looking back on it now, it' pretty dark for a disney movie. Yes the theme was circle of life, but Mufasa was MURDERED. Scar has to be one the most cunning villains out of all the them. Did you guys know that movie was roughly based on Hamlet?

IchiNukeChuu

Really? Come to think of it there are a lot of similarities with Hamlet and Lion King. Another movie that's dark and another favorite of mine is Hunchback of Notre Dame, lots of dark themes in this film.

My favorite Disney animation is the Mythical, Mysterious Magic of ALADDIN!!!

Yes, Aladdin. With the wackiness of Genie, the depth of the plot (not an annoyingly simple Rescue the Princess and live happily ever after stories, I like twists and turns in a story), and the beautifully written romance, what's there not to love?

Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl would have to be my favorite live DIsney movie. I like the sequel and it's secessor, but the first is the overall best. It's lively, doesn't utilize CGI more than a PC-happy Lucas, and it's different from the other Pirate stories like Treasure Island or other old tales.

I am quite fascinated once I found out how dark Disney movies like Lion King and Hunchback was. I listened to a song about burning in Hell. "I'm like, HOLY CRAP this is Disney!!??" That's pretty much equivalent to the intro in At World's End.

Hunchback reminds me a bit of Star Wars since the protagonist's guardian/master lying about their parents. Obi-Wan saying Darth Vader killed Anakin as if Vader was literal and Quasimodo's master saying his parents abandoned him when they were really killed. Also Scar reminds me of Palpatine. Instead of taking blame for destroying the Government, he blames the Jedi. The same with Scar killing Mufasa, "Simba did it."

It's kinda wierd how some people take their plots from old writers. (Meaning they were inspired by Shakespeare) x]

(old writers: meaning Shakespeare inspired them both.)

Sadly enough Disney is making a lot of half decent movies and I think they lost their magic touch( I would be saying they lost the game but I'm not sure if I'm saying it correctly). The best films I've seen recently are from Pixar and I love how they put in easter eggs in each film. The film that I'm hoping is good is there rendition to the The Princess and the frog.

#10 Sep 07th, 3:13pm
SuperTay

I heard that they stopped making direct to dvd sequels because it was killing the franchise.

Disney hasn't done an animated movie for so long so I hope they do still have their magic touch with princess and the frog. They say she is the next princess of the group along with the others. With her added, (if you want to dive deeper into this like others) they will have one for each nationality. It makes you wonder if they did this intentionally

I thought Pixar broke free from Disney? Anyway, yes, they do make good movies. They're making a Toy Story 3.

As for Hunchback, YES it is a dark movie. I think the book is more tragic than the movie. Try to count all the bad stuff in that one.

#11 Sep 07th, 5:02pm
IchiNukeChuu

Pixar still works for Disney and I'm glad that there making a third Toy Story. The company is also making a Cars 2 as well, since Paul Neuman died recently we're not sure if there going to cut out his character or replace it with another actor. The only thing that there missing is an asian princess, Mulan doesn't count, she's not a princess to begin with.

#12 Sep 07th, 5:16pm
Akira Shinji

Mulan is still considered to be one of the eight Disney Princesses, despite her not being of royalty.

#13 Sep 07th, 5:18pm
IchiNukeChuu

Although she's my favorite female, I can't put her as a princess in my opinion. But what ever happened to Kida from Atlantis, she's a princess too.

#14 Sep 07th, 5:25pm
Akira Shinji

According to wikipedia...

The princesses to be featured in the line were chosen from classic Disney films. The characters were not chosen specifically for their royal titles, but rather for how well they fit into what Disney executives deemed “the Princess mythology." Mulan is an example of this concept; she has no familial ties to royalty, but is still included in the character list. Tinker Bell was once included under the same principle before it was decided she was not suited for the "mythology." She now stars in her own Disney franchise, the Disney Fairies.

Sheesh, Disney is so picky about this. :P

#15 Sep 07th, 5:31pm

I guess that explains why Mulan is considered a 'princess'.

Can you think of other Disney movies that you thought were good but were underrated?

#16 Sep 07th, 5:51pm
IchiNukeChuu

Oliver Twist and I forgot there was a film about two mice helping a girl out of a bayou. Another one is the Little Toaster.

Oh oh oh oh oh oh!!! The Rescuers was the bomb! Also 'The Rescuers Down Under' was good too :P I grew up watching those movies A LOT. And I'm not for sure on this, but wasn't "The Black Cauldron" a disney movie? If it was, that was the most disturbing disney movie ever in my opinion.

#18 Sep 07th, 7:21pm
IchiNukeChuu

Yeah the Black Cauldron was a Disney film, another one that's underrated is The King Authur one, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and another one is something about bringing UFO kids to a mountain...Crap I can't remember.

Edit: Thanks Kai for telling the name of the mice film!

Yup! No prob. And the other one is Escape to Witch Mountain. I remember the old version of that movie. It was pretty good :D

#20 Sep 07th, 7:36pm
Akira Shinji

Aww, I always wanted to see the Black Cauldron (there's an ad for it on my Spirit of Mickey VHS, lol). But I never really got around to it. XD

I can't really think of any Disney movies I've watched that were underrated. ...*headdesk*

Alice in Wonderland is another underrated, oh by the way do you remember those sing along videos tapes from back then? Fantasia is lovely and I loved how they animated Clair De Lune(FYI, don't rank me with any book fans who started to listen to this song because of a certain book.)

I can't even read certain books without being called a hypocrite because I hate a certain group of characters because there you know what but they aren't the original thing. But anyways some Disney films are misleading and riddled with hints of innuendo, like Lion King( Simba and Nala moment scene)

Edit: Crap my recent post got double posted, sorry about that.

You know the website www.snopes.com? There is a section dedicated entirely to Disney on that site. There are some pretty interesting things on there.

Oh I read those, there was this one rumor about Bubble Yum having spider eggs and Mountain Dew shriking something. Another snope thing is Lion King about the whole dust flying into the air and it spells out a certain word.

#27 Sep 07th, 7:53pm
SuperTay

You mean the one that suppsosedly spells out 'sex'? I've heard of that one. I don't think it's true.

I liked Alice in wonderland despite it having some 'drug refrences' and 'Sword in the Stone' (that King Arthur one you've spoke of). The Black cauldron was my least favorite because it scared me a bit. I think it was one of the first Disney movies to show blood.

One that I did like was 'The great mouse detective' which was a mouse version of Sherlock Holmes.

The word is suppose to spell out, SFX, but some people find it misleading. Alice in Wonderland is great but lots of obscure things going through the film and the book. Never watched Black Cauldron but I heard its a nice film.

It's nice there doing a 2D film, I was sort of getting annoyed with all these 3D films. But has anyone seen 'UP' yet?

#31 Sep 13th, 9:35am
SuperTay

I'll see Up when it comes out to dvd, which will be soon. I not big on 3D because it both scares me and makes me sick.

I heard 'up' is very touching. I expect that movie to win an oscar. Believe or not, but there were some disney movie that got oscar nominations.

#32 Sep 13th, 5:42pm
IchiNukeChuu

It's alright, I'm not a big fan of 3D films(the horror movies only), I can imagine myself getting a heart attack if I watch The Final Destination or My Bloody Valentine( Jensen Ackles *squeals*). But for some reason Pixar movies tend to make me cry, especially Monsters Inc.

#33 Sep 14th, 5:05pm
Akira Shinji

Disney/Pixar films (or the 3D ones) are sort of hit-or-miss for me. Either I like them or I don't. I was rather fond of Monsters, Inc. :)

And...JENSEEEEEEN~ ♥ I don't think his good looks are even HUMAN...

#34 Sep 14th, 6:37pm
IchiNukeChuu

Sqeeeee~! He's so handsome but I like Misha(he plays Castiel in Supernatural) also, shame from what I heard he's married to someone( lucky duck)

#35 Sep 14th, 6:54pm
Akira Shinji

I think half the Supernatural fans would kill me if I said I liked Misha better than Jensen. Jensen's hot and all, but Misha is just adorable--even when he's doing that stern "holy-work-of-God" expression. X3 I can't wait for S5E2 on Thursday, Ellen is baaaack! :D

Also, I only noticed today how Castiel is the angel of Thursday and Supernatural airs on Thursday nights. Huh.

#36 Sep 14th, 7:09pm
IchiNukeChuu

I cried during the new episode last week, poor Dean, he must be torned because Sam choose a demon over his own brother. But I'm happy that Ruby is gone though. Hooray for Ellen and I hope Bobby is okay in the next ep. Yup Castiel is the angel of Thursay, it's an in-joke referance.

#37 Sep 14th, 7:30pm
Akira Shinji

Yeah, I really felt Dean there. But I had this nagging feeling all season 4 that Ruby was a nasty ol' demon, namely because she NEVER said "oh Sam let's stop the apocalypse", she just kept egging Sam on to go on his little hunting trip...She really bothered me. :P I love the experienced characters on this show (Ellen and Bobby), they're full of win.

...We are so off-topic here.

#38 Sep 15th, 1:29pm
IchiNukeChuu

I never liked Ruby from the start, she just rubbed me the wrong way. But I wonder who brought Castiel back and how did the brother get on the plane? Was it God's work or was it someone else? But anyways, yeah we are really off topic.

Who's the best disney villain?

#40 Sep 15th, 6:39pm
IchiNukeChuu

Best villain... I would say Maleficent, Hades, Evil Queen, and possibly the Witch Doctor in the Princess and the frog.

#41 Sep 15th, 7:12pm
Vospader21

Best villain? Well, for live action it would be Davy Jones hands down. But for animation I'd pick Hades, it may be cliche'd but when you think about it how many disney villains have actually commanded fire?

Does anyone remember those old disney cartoons they used to air in the 90's. Like, Goof Troop and Darkwing duck?

I remember those. I really liked gooftroop, and TaleSpin. I didn't see all the episodes though.

There are so many I can name. The ones that I did watch were Duck Tales, Goof Troop, Gummi bears (not that much but I remember it), Gargoyles and Darkwing duck.

Gargolyes, was made by Disney? I didn't know that. It's definitely an old favorite for me. I think I've seen just about every episode of it. Each one that I have seen still remains vivid in my memory.

Toy story 3 trailer!

The trailer is a bit sad, the toys were donated to a playcare center and I can't help but laugh and feel sad for the Mr and Mrs. Potato. And holy crap, Buzz Lightyear has a second personality, Spanish Lightyear. What next, French Lightyear?

#48 Oct 15th, 6:12pm
Akira Shinji

I would honestly not mind a French Lightyear. XD Je blâme mon classe de français...

#49 Oct 15th, 6:14pm
IchiNukeChuu

Although, I never remembered a toy having how many languages. But what the heck, I would love to see more Lightyear personalities, German Lightyear, Japanese Lightyear, Korean Lightyear, Ect.!
