Topic: Sadistic, Intelligent, Strong: Mello
This is a topic for the discussion of that precious blond bundle of energy, Mello. Try to keep the spoilers on a minimum, hm?

Oh, cool! I'm the first to post, besides you of course! Mello is cool. He's my second favorite character in DN, second only to L.

Eh, Mello always bothered me. He is completely irrational and uses a backwards thought. Still, he is superiour to Near most of the time cause his reasoning is better. Nevertheless, I think he is an awesome character. (I still hate Near though!)

(I don't hate Near, I just don't think he's a very lovable character...)

Mello, he's so emotional, and sometimes that completely BLINDS him, to a fault really. He's so bent on knocking Near down from his throne and being number one that he'll resort to anything. The mafia, kidnapping, explosives (hence that lovely scar), holding Halle hostage to get that picture back, almost shooting Near, etc. It doesn't matter if it's illegal, if he wants to do it, sure as hell it'll get done, one way or another. Most of the technology he had was probably pirated or stolen (my agreement with Flamika's fanon, really), and he had Matt following him around and doing his bidding with him. They worked together more than Mello and Near ever could, because they really had similar personalities, and Matt was just a lazy bum (more Flamika fanon agreement.)

They are such good friends, and I really adore that in them. I was sad that they had to go.

Mello... When I first saw him, I must admit /he scared the living daylights out of me/. First of all, his eyes were very creepy when he first appeared. Plus, he's the complete oppisite of me. I'm rather timid and don't like the idea of immorality, while he's done just about everything immoral. However, I really like how his character isn't just thrown together, but you can see what influenced him in his childhood. Plus, his interactions with Matt and Near are amusing to read both in canon and fanon... Mostly. ^^ So in the end, I believe he is an interesting character, but not my personal favorite.

He truly scared you? When I first saw Mello I was totally in love with him. If not for any other reason than the fact that he looked REALLY upset to hear of L's death, and the other little boy simply called the man a loser. As for me, I'm way outgoing and I'm rather a lot like Mello, or so I'm told. But I see myself as more of a Matt character X3.

I agree that he did look kind of creepy when he first appeared, but that's mainly what drew me towards him. He didn't look anything like any of the other characters, whereas Near looked so much like L, in the way he sat, having to use his hands constantly, etc. I loved L, but man as soon as Mello appeared on the scene he totally faded from my mind (not totally, but kind of.) Then Mello dropped down to my second fav when Matt came :].

He's my second personal favorite.

Yes. For the next couple of days after the volume had filtered through my friends, any talk about Mello was centered on how creepy he looked, and how Near and Mello could NEVER measure up to L. Plus, after all of the intense logic games, Mello's bold actions was rather like a loud noise in a quiet room- very shocking. Personally, I find myself drawn to the quiet, smart types, which meant for me Near was the awesome-est character. While I was upset at L's death, I found Near's likenesses more of a tie to L, rather than making him into an "L" clone. *shrug*

And please excuse my incoherentness once again. ^^

Yeah. Mello kinda freaked me out too. I thought his eyes were, strange to say the least. One of them was like half open and one was wide... Weird. Nevertheless, I grew to like Mello. A Lot. I can even do the eye thing!

K2-Romance
I agree. Near wasn't an L clone as people kept making him out to be, he was merely an L fanatic like everyone else at Wammy's House. He wanted revenge, which is very human, and completely disproves anything that anyone says about Near being emotionless to an inhuman extent. He blocked his feelings off because he thought he wouldn't need them as a detective, but he should've known that, as L knew, they were kind of important. When he finally declared to Raito, "Yagami Raito, you are Kira." He seemed so proud of himself, but kind of smug on the side, and then he finally got his revenge for Mello and L's deaths. Go Near!

On to Mello~! Well, Mello was a very emotional creature, so his facial expressions were going to be a little bit more varying than Near's constantly blank facade, so his eyes are going to contort and his mouth his going to be large and loud. As he gets older that lessens a lot, however his emotions seem to spread like wildfire even more than when he was young, and he still didn't outgrow his rash actions and inability to think coherantly before performing a task. That's just how he is. Which makes him such a great character because he's totally opposite Near. He wears black and is loud and brash, smart yet emotionally unstable (to an extent), yet Near wears all white and is quiet and thoughtful, and though he's intelligent he keeps himself under wraps. Mello has friends (Matt his only true friend, even though he "befriended" the Mafia) and Near isn't close to anyone at all, only leaving his relationships to professional buisness ones, except his affections for L of course.

I never liked Near very much for that reason. Get out and have some fun! Mello just attracted me like a moth to flame, kind of how Matt did. They both have very addictive personalities.

Mello remains iffy. He is an extremist. (So is Near....) However, I have to like his philosphy. It seems to be "I can handle letting you cut me to the bone, but can you take if when I cut your flesh?"

I like the guy.

I like him too :]. He's so human and yeah, his philosophy is very extreme. It's one of those things where he can take it and dish it out as well. And I'm sure he enjoys dishing it out as much as the next guy, you know? What a cool character.

Still, it is his own philosphy that kills him.

*Sigh*

Tis the irony of Human existance. We tend to lead ourselves to our own, curiously entertaining, demise.

"curiously entertaining"

Heh, I suppose demise can be entertaining, and usually, our deaths reflect how be live. Mello lived in the extreme, acting as a criminal more often then not, using people, killing people, making everything work to his advantage. Death by heart attack and then burned by fire in a church was seemingly... Mello-esque. Heart attack, because he was a criminal and Kira kills criminals, and fire in a church, almost as if the very fires of Hell were upon him. That rosary must mean something, you know? Perhaps he is agnostic, or maybe even a full blown Christian (I know nothing about religion so forgive me if any of this is incorrect).

Poor Mello. I hope he met up with Matt in Heaven.

#14 Apr 22nd 2007, 8:42am
Light-kun
Actually, I thought the church might signify gothic. Gothic being darkly artistic or poetic in nature. Which would reflect on himself. Also, it does seem like all of the characters die in perfect symbolance to their lives. Soichiro died in ignorance of his son, almost as his son's hand. Mello's death is explained. L's death was also oddly perfect. Plus, Light's death. OMG, we need an entire board to talk about their Death's and how they symbolize their lives. DO IT MIHAEL!! (Or I will do it. I suppose thier death doesn't really fit under detective ideas of their life.)

How depressing -_-;;

It's never a good thing when someone dies, though someone who doesn't like you might think it's good. However I should be very sad if you die ;_;.

However, Mello's death was so... so significant to so very few people. No one really knew him so very few people could mourn, yet I would bet that Near wasn't as cold as he acted regarding Mello's death. Really, in Manga 9 page 142 was such an integral moment between Near and Mello, a show that their rivalry was as strong as ever, and Near was playing his side of it as much as Mello was. I'm sure the blond was a loss to Near. And I would assume Halle wasn't exactly pleased with Mello's death, I mean, he lived in her bathroom for a week, so she must have gotten to know him well.

You have MINE, silly! I don't have yours, duh! IM me, I'm on :].

I don't know, because after something like this, I don't think she could go back to a normal life. It would seem so empty, so strange, you know? After all that adventure, the various brushes with death, it would be almost blasphemous to just go back to your normal jobs or whatever you do.

Alright, ignoring Halle for a moment, I will refocus on Mello. I think that Mello is a representation of a medium between Kira and Light. Similair to Kira, he kills criminals and people who will be after him and the mafia group. Also, you look at a flip side that he is against not only Kira, but "himself" Near. It is almost like Mello is friends with Kira (empathizes to be more exact...) and Near is friends with L-Light. (A little stretched, but stay with me for a moment.) For Mello, this is a game against Near to catch Kira. Simlairly, L and Light raced to catch [the third] Kira first. Now then, the parallels of L/Light, Near, and Mello to the three seperate persona's of Memoryless-Light, L, and Kira-Light is almost scary. So then, to set it up:

Category: Kira (Light)

Mello (Mafia)

Kira of the New World(Misa and Kira/Light)

Teru Mikami (More extreme version of ~

Takada (Seperate cause she

is too stupid to come up

with own ideas. Way for

Mikami and Light/kira to

talk.)

____________________

Category: L

Near

Mello (Win the game of catching Kira version of Mello, he goes all out like L.)

Light/L

____________________

Category: Memoryless-Light

Misa (After Note loss)

(Until Vol. 11) L/Light

Matt (Follows Mello's orders like Light did for L. [It was more mutual for Light and L though.])

Personally, I've always had a bit of a crush on Mello, xD, yeah, laugh all you want. I like him because he's so passionate about everything he does. I've always wished i could be so dedicated and driven about something like he is, opposed to Near who is somewhat unfeeling. I can't fathom a person alive being like Near, and i think his character is very unrealistic. Mello however is just... yeah. ///

I agree lol. It is much better to be very passionate about everything then about nothing. I think Mello should have taken over as L... He wouldn't have wasted time talking to Light, but instead he would just put a bullet thru his head hahaha.

Light is my personal favorite...but I won't argue that. *Completely realizes that L is my name...*

However, I do love Mello too, and his drive is amazing. However, Near is just a driven, ony he goes about things in a different way. He is just as realistic as Mello, however, it is hard for me to like Near because his logic, though thought out, is biased toward his sense of justice, where as L would not have critized Light in the fashion of "The Wet Blanket." I believe L, has many times, calmly explained the flaws in Kira's logic. I believe that L wouldn't have been so blunt. In fact, and this is only a theory, I think that if L caught Kira the ending result(I know the movie ended it another way, but that is to keep the final result, and this is because Rem was going to kill L.):

*Soichiro retires from police force. (May not in this scenario.)

*L inquires Ryuk if this is another way to end Kira without killing him. If Ryuk decides not to kill Light yet, and reveals truth about ownership and memories.

*Light would be forced to surrender all his notebooks.

*Light would lose all memories.

*L burns the notes.

*L reveals truth to innocent Light, and offers the innocent Light the oppurtunity to work with L as the figurehead "L."

If Mello figured out Light=L=Kira, and he found Light:

*Gun. Light dead. Period.

An ostrich?

I guess so.

His eyes look pretty deranged.

And yeah, Mello is definately an extremist. I like him more than Near because I can relate to him more, but Near's okay too. In a way, I thought L was more like Near and Mello was more like Light. But that might just be the impression I got.

It was kind of painful to see him reject the idea of working with Near at the beginning, because I think that would have been pretty interesting. But obviously someone like Mello would never agree to that.

Btw I actually thought he looked better with the scar.

I.. happen to like Mello too, for some reason... I will not laugh at whoever said the have a little crush on mello, bcz i have to admit it also... ^-^"

Mello is also my second fave Dn character, after the one and only Ryuuzaki-san.

does look better with the scar. He seems to be losing his Wammyness. lol. His hair is not as Willy Wonka-ish as it was before.

Did anyone who watched the anime expect Mello/Mihael keehl's voice to be sooooooooo deep?! It's kinda sexy. lol.

Yah, i saw it. I sucked and I'm scared of watching it in English. Hearing them talk in English doesn't sit right with me. L sounded like Darth vader near the beginning, light sounded like one of those weirdo fat guys who spend their time playing World of Warcraft (not bashing any WoW players, since that game is probably very interesting to you, so don't take it personally.) the only one who sounded okay was Ryuk and he was just Hyuking at the end of the trailer.

I never heard mello in it.

Of course L sounded like Vader, he was using a voice scrambler. And Light, I don't think, is that bad. I think we just need to wait for the anime before we judge the anime harshly.

Yeah, Mello's voice was really deep in the anime, as was Light's...But look what they did to Light's voice in the English dub...IT WAS AWFUL!! Light sounded like an immature, dorky kid.

I bet they make Mello sound immature too.

Wow I really dread to think what they'll do to Misa Misa. They'll probably make her like an old man or something. =P

Again, let us wait for something clearer than thoughts. If I recall, the thoughts of the characters in the Japanese version had a different tone and voice styling. It may be something like that. However, I am not sure, so don't hold me to that. I am just an optimist.

He only laughed because the trailer only included the "...I am JUSTICE!" bit from the anime. Also, we HAD to have heard the voices on computers, which is not crystal clear...

Meh, just an optimist.

Tis okay to be an optimist. I know that l sounded like vader cause of the voice scrambler but i do agree that light sounded like a geeky kid.

But to be optimistic like Light-kun, we DID have to hear it on the computer, but it sounded crystal clear to me....

Maybe it is just the person at the time? They could change, they almost always do. It could have been a test for all we know. However, sadly, that is highly unlikely. I don't really see how Light sounded like a geeky kid. I knew several people in high school, scattering among the band geeks to the jocks who had a similar voice. (Also went through age. The only geeky anime character I have ever heard was little yugi, but even that wasn't god awful. *Thinks*

Remember though, despite the absurdist Comedy genre, and the overall intricate plot, Light represents the corruption of ideals and innocence. I will, when someone else post the many symbols that are Light Yagami in this series. BTW, if you wrote out, just chapter one boredom, and include descriptions, it would be 10 pages and then a little? That means, that as a complete novel, and assuming each chapter to be at least 10 pages, then:

10 x 108=1080

That is probably the longest book I have ever read.

And we all know chapter 58 would have been enormous!

Ahhh, not to be a hypocrite, I got completely off topic. I am blaming myself here:

In his final moments, Mello thought of Matt. If you can, look up (or watch) that part again. Do you think this is a regret for sins or a regret for involving Matt? More specifically, do you think that it may have been neither, and merely an sincere gesture of gratitude for Matt's help? Thoughts?

...I am NOT a geek. Band kids… we’re dedicated, haha.

Back on subject! I believe that Mello most likely felt a mixture of all three of those things. He most likely felt a slight pang of contrition for all he’d done, the people he’d killed. After all, people say that one can see one’s death flash before their eyes before they’re about to die, or as they’re dying, so Mello could’ve possibly seen the mistakes, the ways of winning this so called race to the finish with Near. I think that Matt’s death could have triggered some sort of remorse for killing people. He was even lenient with Takada, allowing her to strip under a blanket instead of right in front of him, thus leading to his own death.

I also think that he might have regretted, in the end, involving his best friend. (I will spare you my intense yaoi fangirlism, I promise). After all, when Mello has so few people close to him to begin with (I don’t officially count Halle and Near in that), losing his best friend in the entire world, the only person, save for perhaps L, he ever trusted thoroughly… it might have been earth shattering for him. Matt was pretty much all Mello had left, and he might’ve thought, in theory, that if he hadn’t involved Matt, then nothing would have happened to him.

However, I wouldn’t believe for an instant that Matt wouldn’t get in on the case eventually if he knew that Mello was going to try himself. News of Mello would have reached him eventually; after all he probably had left the Wammy House long before Mello obtained his scar, and I think that Matt would want to have tried to meet up with him at some point. It seems like they were probably friends in the past, I doubt Mello would want to trust strangers again, like he had the Mafia, and Matt, with electronic expertise he seemed to have, would be a valuable asset. I am not implying that Mello was using Matt, however, though that could be an interesting argument point.

Thirdly, I also believe that Mello would want his last thoughts to be of Matt because of how much Matt had done for him up to that point. I mean honestly, he died for his cause! It was terribly painful. I think that it would be gratitude for helping him through the rough spots, and despite how tough and hard Mello may seem on the surface, he probably found it rather nice to have a friend around with him.

Okay I’m done, resisting the urge to splurge on some yaoi talk. I’ll let your brains stay where they are.

.

*Raises hand*

I am an avid yaoi fan...though not a girl.

*Everyone is thinking WTF!?*

Yeah, well, it happens. However, look at Light, he looked at **, knowing his dad could be watching, but wasn't even think about it as **. I find Yaoi story lines generally brilliant, and the couples are so cute. I find that the romance in a yaoi is often a darker romance, which makes my evil happy.

Actually, when Mello thought of Matt, it was prior to Takada writing his name in the Death Note. I am about 95% sure of this.

#49 Aug 16th 2007, 8:34pm
Yulan the Exhausted
I like Mello a lot, and his place is just after L and Rem.

Er, if you ask about my favourite pairing concerning him...I won't be able to answer you. I pretty appreciate all the MattxMello stuffs out there (not when Matt's playing the girl role), but at the same time, I like the moments of Mello with Halle.

Yaoi might be good, but not really that good when people gets too far... that's one of the reasons I pick up MelloxHalle. However, it's not the only reason...I've got a lots of ideas of what had happened in the week Mello spent in Halle's house. :P

But then, if Mello stays alone from being shipped, it will be the best option for us fangirls. XD
