TerraAftershockTopic: An annoying fad in m-rated yaoi When it comes to m-rated yaoi, I have a pet peeve. I see this all the time: two of the characters admit their feelings in some way, shape, or form, then instanty have sex. WHY?!?!? They've been just friends for ages, with nothing romantic between them, but the moment they know their in love, they go all the way. It's just completely unrealistic (yes, I know, you might think it stupid to want realism in a fan fic). I may be over-reacting, but it's gotten to the point where I feel like rolling my eyes. No, I don't have a problem with m-rated yaoi in general, but at least have them be farther along in a romantic relationship than that. What do you think? |

absent writerPeople love the idea that there's a ton of romantic aka sexual tension simmering beneath the surface of every male character in YnM, just waiting to burst free and...well, you know the rest. I suppose that the writers assume (often correctly) that readers aren't really interested in the fluffy parts that actually have something to do with plot/character dev. and just get to the sex. There are exceptions though, Blossoms and Blood does a good job of tying the two so well together you can't tell them apart. Or you die of massive nosebleeds. |

TransI totally agree that there should be some sort of relationship build-up before and after the confession so that it is more realistic. That being said...if we are talking men, then it isn't that unrealistic for them to have sex. Men in general like sex and would be a bit more promiscuous. If they just confessed that they loved each other and are hot for one another, then having sex soon after isn't odd.The TsuSoka pairing is an obvious exception for me. The insecurities and emotional problems these two have make it a necessity that there is TONS of relationship buildup before sex (if it is to be in character and believable). That is my opinion. | #3 Mar 19th 2008, 11:29pm

QueenOfHearts3Frankly, I think character/relationship development should be obvious for any pair, regardless of genders or time-frame. I mean, sure, there will be the odd time that you whip up some pointless bit of whatever to clear out your brain... but any time you're really serious about what you're writing, there has to more to it. If it's nothing more than people going at it like rabbits trying to take over the world, and you could plug anyone at all into the situation, then... why bother? I've seen work where the characters would confess and immediately fall into bed (or whatever happens to be available XD), and still come out brilliantly thanks the author's characterization skills. Others have had chapter after chapter of... well, nothing... before "getting to the point." This goes for any story, never mind the genre or required level of maturity. Just my two cents, anyway =^_^= *trots back to what she should be doing (aka: working on her TsuSoka... bloody writer's block!) | #4 Apr 15th 2008, 10:07pm

TrisakAminawnMm...ditto the absent writer's comment about everyone's assumptions of crazy levels of sexual tension all 'round. Given that both Tsuzuki and Tatsumi are on record with some version of 'yeck' with reference to homosexuality, and Hisoka's entire sexual history consists of being raped, and they don't know any women very well, development over some time is a must for any pairing involving any of them. There certainly are scenarios where meaningful characterization and that annoying immediate-fall-into-bed aren't incompatible, but I don't think Yami no Matsuei has any characters that it would work with. Unless it was one of those improbable con pairings involving Muraki. Men are definitely capable of being shy, though, Trans. Lots of them are. Especially in their first ever consensual homosexual situation. Few guys have sex drives that are going to blow through that level of socially conditioned awkwardness so easily, and all the YnM guys tend to overthink everything, so they're particularly likely to be hesitant, even in a scenario of admitted mutal attraction. |
