Topic: Game: Action Writing Challenge. Deadline: 28 February -AND- Winner of Time: WinchesterPhantom

Action Writing Challenge now closed

Congratulations to WinchesterPhantom, winner of the Time Writing Challenge!

The Time Writing Challenge can be found here: http://www.fanfiction.net/topic/2872/8946185/1/

And below is what our judge, Rhea Silverkeys had to say:

My choice is 'Cutting It Away' (fandom: Law and Order: CI) by WinchesterPhantom. I thought it was written very well and at times, was just beautiful. It was written from the POV of a ten-year old child, and I was impressed by the style of writing - the thoughts and narrative sounded much like a child (at least to me). It was also a very good use of the theme. The only complaint I have about this piece is that some of the punctuation in the dialogues were off.

All the entries did a very good job with the theme, and although I didn't know any of the fandoms, in some I could really see the thought put in for instance when either taking a snapshot of the past or a look at the future. Honourable mention goes to 'Good Knight, Little Bird' (fandom: Batman Beyond) by Darkwinter999. The story was very well-written, and also very well-written in present tense. I didn't know the fandom and so couldn't really catch the deepness of it, but it was a very good read. I also thought 'Daddy' Girl' by Satine89 and 'Change' by Missed Nin were very good snapshots of the future.

The winning piece can be found here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4555701/1/Cutting_It_Away

CHALLENGE:

Write a story in the action/adventure genre. I want something exciting - a fight scene, a car chase, a crash, pulling off a heist...anything that involves pumping adrenalin through your character.

RULES:

1. The story may be any genre, rating or fandom you choose; with a minimum length of 1000 words and maximum length of 10 000 words. The story may have a multi-chaptered sequel, but the first chapter must fulfil all the challenge requirements and be able to stand alone as a complete story (meaning you don't need to read chapters 2 onwards).

2. The story must be uploaded to the site by FEBRUARY 28TH, 2009.

3. The words "Writers Anonymous Action Challenge" or, in short, "WA Action Challenge" must be in the summary.

4. Reply to this post with a link to your entry when you have completed the challenge.

JUDGING:

One (or two) of the mods will be judging the story. They'll be looking at the quality of the writing and how well-written the action was.

PRIZES:

S'not much, but the winner of the challenge will be featured on the Writers Anonymous Challenge Winners C2. A sort of consolation prize for all participants is that by posting your story link in this thread, you get coverage for it on the forum for almost two months, as this topic is pinned.

Hmm...let's see if I can put something together. Actually, I needed a break, so I'm glad it didn't go up sooner. ;)

Rhea are we allowed to write it in second person P.o.V?

Like for example:

You stand at the edge of the cliff, your heart racing, your mind running wild. You aren't sure if you should do this. In fact you most likely shouldn't. But you have too. You take a deep breath, and jump..... etc.

Sure you can write it in any prose device you like. Just make sure you do it justice ;) and that it meets the FFnet rules for publication (proper prose, no scripts, rated for content etc).

I have a question about the challenges. Can they be a chapter in a multi-fic story? I'm writing one and one of my chapters is very action-y. However, it's just that chapter. You don't need to read the whole fic to understand it though.

Ahem...

If it's not the first chapter you'd need to post it on its own. However double posting is against FFnet's rules so...

I might post it late because I have to supply some poems as an entry to the national young writers contest of my home country!

Good luck in that! But, erm, you still have to submit this challenge by the end of February if you want it included in the judging. You still have a month and a half though so it should be fine =)

#15 Jan 13th 2009, 3:37pm
kidishcaresh

Yes I know. I just meant to say that unlike the other contests where I usually post as one of the first to finish. I might post around 24 or 25th of feb. Within the deadline, but just late.

#16 Jan 16th 2009, 3:24pm

That's fine =) I think most people post a few days before the deadline anyway =)

I seriously hate my life. Not only am I going to be late because of the contest but also has my computer once more died on me and the only other computer with web connection in my house that I can use just lost its web connection....sigh...I should call tomorrow to demand a new computer but I'm gonna wait till dad finishes his call with the web company on why my bro and I have wireless web and he has no more web! I need to do job related stuff on this thing too so I dun wanna send it away so I can receive my new one unless I'm sure I have web on dad's computer!

Hope it all works out for you soon though.

I've never entered one of these challenges before. Can we use stories we already have if they fit the criteria? Also, as a mod, am I even eligible to enter?

#20 Jan 21st 2009, 4:35am
Rhea Silverkeys

=) Yes, mods can enter as long as they are not judging, of course! You cannot use stories that have already been posted online. If you've already been working on one that fits, it's ok to just finish it off, edit it and post. But it can't already be 'published'.

#21 Jan 21st 2009, 4:54am
Darkwinter999

What if it was already written but never posted? Not that I have one, but I was curious about that. Just in case.

#22 Jan 21st 2009, 2:10pm
kidishcaresh

I think it's only fair that it's not already published. I mean some of us have worked our behinds off to deliver a story on time and you could just post one that's already there and not have to do anything for the contest really. That just wouldn't be fair right?

If it's not already published it would probably be okay I guess but wait for Rhea to answer to be sure.

I just had a very funny idea for this challenge but I'm not sure it's allowed because it would be action/adventure/humor? Or rather Adventure/humor since apparently FFN don't have action as a separate genre from what I could see.

The fandom would be Saiyuki which I've recently finished the first of the 3 seasons off. I'm going to write it either way I just want to make sure it's okay with Rhea if the story genre is also humor??? There will be some fighting at the beginning some fighting amongst each other in the middle and more fighting the badguy at the end and I might let the canon badguys and girls swing by somewhere along the story!

I hope it's still allowed - mine's going to have some humor/crack in it, too. Besides, in Saiyuki, Gojyo vs Goku can be just as cool to watch as any of the serious fights.

#24 Jan 23rd 2009, 1:58pm
kidishcaresh

Well the idea was that a certain member of the group (Cough-dragon-cough) becomes a 3 year old human child. I'm still thinking on it though, I kind of got the idea while watching the show. I was thinking it'd be funny to have Hakuryuu turned into a human, since it wasn't decided what gender the dragon has from what I could find out I decided to go with girl.

#25 Jan 24th 2009, 8:21am
Darkwinter999

I'm trying to come up with a good fic to write for this challenge, but I'm not sure if it's alright to have an incredible fight-scene at the beginning that ends with a cliff-hanger, skip backwards to the day before to show how he got there and then end with another chase scene. Chapter two will be the resolution, but it could still stand alone with just what I have above. Is that within the parameters, or does it need to be action the whole way?

#26 Jan 24th 2009, 12:49pm
Rhea Silverkeys

What if it was already written but never posted? Not that I have one, but I was curious about that. Just in case.

Honestly, I would never be able to tell if you had even if you didn't! For me, the spirit of the challenges is to try and write something in the time frame given, as well as give yourself some writing exercise. You may choose to submit something that has already been written, but I just think it's more fun to write something new. Lol. I think there have been coincidences in the past where someone already had an idea for a story, or was partway writing, and then the challenge came out and the story they were working on just so happened to fit into the criteria. I don't think there's anything wrong with them then submitting that story as their challenge entry. They still had to write the rest of it out.

I just had a very funny idea for this challenge but I'm not sure it's allowed because it would be action/adventure/humor?

Of course it's allowed! A story would be very bland if it only had one 'genre' in it. Action/adventure only has to be the main genre (as in, you can't write twenty paragraphs about some humorous banter, or a romantic outing, and have only one paragraph of action).

I'm trying to come up with a good fic to write for this challenge, but I'm not sure if it's alright to have an incredible fight-scene at the beginning that ends with a cliff-hanger, skip backwards to the day before to show how he got there and then end with another chase scene. That sounds like it's in the parameters. It doesn't need to be action all the way, it just needs a healthy dose of it.

#27 Jan 24th 2009, 1:54pm
Darkwinter999

Oh, a very healthy dose! I plan for about two thirds of the chapter to be action.

think there have been coincidences in the past where someone already had an idea for a story, or was partway writing, and then the challenge came out and the story they were working on just so happened to fit into the criteria.

I had a storyline that I had vaguely plotted out that had fit a challenge almost to a T, so I jacked the history, tweaked to fit and wrote the story after it. I didn't win (which still puzzles me since second place had so much wrong with the spelling and grammar, but oh well) but I still got lots of wows out of it, here and on the site I wrote it for.

Wasn't he originally a male in the original Journey to the West? There's a similar figure in Patalliro Saiyuki, a dragon prince that turns into a white horse that Sanzo rides on. Male, in that case. Either way, it sounds like a great idea. I'd really love to read it when it's done.

#29 Jan 24th 2009, 2:25pm

WEll I finished watching the series Saiyuki and the first six episodes of Saiyuki reloaded and Hakuryuu is both refered to as her and as he by the group. That why I figured he could be any gender. I just though making him a girl would suit better, because if I should feel inspired enough to add more chapters I'd like to make it slightly centered on Hakkai and Hakuryuu since it's obvious in the series they have a strong bond of friendship and all...yeah I have a weird mind sometimes.

So What do you all think? Should I stick with making Hakuryuu a little girl or go for a little boy? Either way would work for the contest.

To Rhea: It's Saiyuki. I've seen 56 episodes now and not a single one didn't have any fighting and action in it!

Ugh I so can't describe fight scenes...it's all. ...punched the demon in the gut and kicked another in the head...I need to read up on my favorites to get a better feel for action type scenes...mine sound like someone's giving a play by play

It's up to you in the end. I was just always under the impression that Hakuryuu was male. (Specifically, the white dragon guy from Gaiden). I just can't ever remember Hakuryuu being called 'she'. (In the subbed version, anyway)

Besides, with Hakkai's background as a teacher, turning Hakuryuu into a child of any gender there'll be the student-teacher dynamic to play off of.

#31 Jan 26th 2009, 5:45am
kidishcaresh

I've decided to go with a boy as opposed to my innitial idea. Though I also thought briefly of making Sanzo be the one to get hit and change into a child, just because it'd be fun to see what would happen but then it would fall outside of the contest regulations.

Ack now I have not only a dead computer that the company won't take back and the shop won't refund while it's dead and broken, I also have a huge writers block again T^T Why me?!

EDIT: FEB 11TH 2009

Unfortunately I took a bad fall down the stairs the other day. This has resulted in a light sprain of the upper back and neck and many many bruises. I'm hurting like hell and unable to move my left arm too well. Sigh, looks like it's not my lucky week...I'm hoping that this will not deter me from writing my story, but as I can't sit up for too long without hurting I can not use the computer that has MS WORD 2007 on it and my 1/4 finished story it will take me a while so I'm hoping I'll make the deadline. T^T

Gha! Site login and submission part was broken for the past 5 days! O.o God I was so worried they were not gonna make it on time for the deadline.

Anyways just letting you know. I decided to change my mind and write a Kenshin fic since I couldn't get any inspiration for my first attempt... I should still have it done on time unless the login and submission functions go and break again, but I should hope we'll get an extended deadline should that be the case.

Pencils down!

I'm calling this competition closed, since it's almost the 2nd of March in some of the more recalcitrant time zones. Come on you slow coaches catch up - it's been the 2nd here for over 18 hours ;)

As far as I can see we have the following entries:

* Spring tears by kidishcaresh

* Sweet_Revenge by Resident Bishounen

* Sorry guys, I'm going to have to drop out. It was fun, but RL slammed me and I've got no time! by Darkwinter999

Darkwinter's is my favourite story so far, very Hemingway-esque. "For sale: Baby clothes, never used." ;)

I think seeing as we only have 2 entries that Darkwinter999's late entry should be allowed for the contest. I mean it's kind of a lonely contest with only 2 people entering for it. (lonelier when it looked as if I were the only one. T^T No fun to win if no one else enters. Anyone can win if they're the only contestant.)
