Topic: Daja, the Underappreciated One
I don't know if it's because she's so often shafted by the fandom, or because she's a much more subtle type of character, but Daja is my favorite of the four Circle of Magic characters. It's not that I don't love Sandry, Tris and Briar; I do. Daja just catches my attention most.

She's sensitive and ideological. That much is obvious by her relationship with Ben in Cold Fire. You could just tell that his betrayal was crushing to her. Even before that, she was deeply hurt by the rejection of her people, but she wasn't angry. She didn't blame them for casting her out, because she was raised a Trader and she knew that they believed she was dangerous to any Trader she spent time with. Yet, when given the chance, she didn't even hesitate to help Tenth Caravan Idaram.

Daja knows what's right, even if sometimes it's difficult for her to acknowledge it, like when Nia and Jory needed two different kinds of meditation. She didn't want to do it, she delayed it as much as she could, but once she knew it was the right thing to do, she went ahead and did it. Her sense of right and wrong is so powerful that when she found out that one of her creations was being used to hurt people, she felt guilty even though it was never really her fault.

In conclusion, Daja is awesome and spiffy. Her quiet, compassionate nature really appeals to me. I really don't know why Daja doesn't get more love. People! Spread the Daja love!

I always liked Daja too. Maybe I liked Tris a bit better, because her temper is way like mine, but I noticed all the thigs you said about Daja too. Even in TWOTE, when she was revealed as a lesbian, I wasn't shocked. Daja is just sort of the person who is always calm and rational. It doesn't matter what she does, what happens, she's sort of this supporting pillar.

...maybe that's why I like her. No way in hell am I either of those two.

I know. I always liked Daja, particularly in 'The Circle Opens', even if my favourite character was Tris, but still. Definitely underappreciated. I find most Circle fanfics only refer to her.

I like Daja and admire her. I like her equally as much as Sandry, Briar, and Tris, so if anyone asked who my favorite Circle of Magic characters were, I'd have the say the four of them.

Daja's so quiet and understated I payed her too little attention in the earlier books. xD She grabbed my attention in WotE (for obvious reasons) and since then has become my favorite character. ^^ She's a rock. Solid, dependable, and one can't imagine her not being there. She's a ground force, and arguably the most sensible of the four. Her advice is just as insightful as Tris', but without the sting. And she's the one that represents a whole heap of prejudices rolled into one. African American, Gypsy, and lesbian. Not to mention the whole exiled-by-her-people thing. And she has that wicked sense of humor. xD And her lazy confidence. Her 'I know who I am and where I am, I've got nothing to prove to you' attitude. She's compatent, and she doens't make excuses. And, as shallow as reason as it is, she's a lesbian. I've got a soft spot a mile wide for that sort of thing. xD

I know what you mean. She was less... obvious?... a character in those books because Briar, Tris and Sandry catch your attention, but Daja is more interesting in some ways.

Even if her lover is a chick? xD You make it sound like it's a minor personality flaw.

No, not really. Elaborate. Learned her place in life how?

I wouldn't put it as 'lost', per say, more 'lonely'. And...well...fit in how? Briar wasn't exactly open and welcoming towards Rizu...

Btw, Gawain, I have ordered What Happened to Lani Garver...

Heh. He was more welcoming than I'd be if someone made a move on my sister. But yeah, I see what you both mean.

Lucky you. You'd be surprised at the amount of older siblings who make life hell.

Sorry. No offence to any older siblings here. Personal aggressions.

Daja is one of my favorite characters, next to Tris and Rosethorn. The end.
