Lexie-HTopic: The Reviews Lounge Reviewer's Choice Awards 2008 - NOMINATIONS CLOSED
First off, welcome to the Reviewer's Choice Awards! As some of you might remember, we ran this for the first time last year, and in 2008 it's back - bigger and better than ever! For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept, please read the below carefully; for those who were around last year, you may notice a few minor changes. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! ... Ok, so it's time we get this kicked off! The Timeframe This year, nominations will be open from July 31st to August 31, and voting will run from September 1st until October 31st! The Categories Subject to some alterations at this stage, this year we're asking for nominations for the following categories: The Reviewer’s Choice for: - General - Romance - Humour/Parody - Drama - Poetry - Adventure/Mystery/Suspense - Family/Friendship - Angst/Hurt/Comfort/Tragedy - Most Original Idea - Best Canon Piece - Best AU Piece - Best Review [This is brand new - nominate any review you feel is worthy of an award, and include an excerpt - 50 words max - as a special new way of saying thank you to the people who make you smile!] - Best Oneshot - Best Chapter Story - Best Work-in-Progress [Sadie's idea, to encourage writers to persevere with their story!) Special Awards Further, this year we're introducing the Reviews Lounge Staff's Choice Award (if you think you're eligible to have a say in this - if, for example, you staff our Archive or any Official offshoots on other sites - big clue, are you mentioned as staff in the Noticeboard? - contact me with your nominations!) for our personal favourite story; and, the penultimate Reviewer's Choice Award for 2008, which at this stage will be awarded to the story that receives the most votes overall! Some General Rules 1. Nominations for stories MUST come from either the RL C2 archive, or the RL recommendations archive. 2. When placing your nominations, please remember to specify which category you're nominating a story for. It would also be wonderful if you could link to the nominated fic. 3. This year, to keep things simple, stories [NOT authors] will only be eligible for one award each (at this stage this detail is subject to change) so nominate where you feel appropriate, but the story will only be submitted for your final vote (by blind poll) in its most popular category! ... Hopefully this will all run nice and smoothly - feel free to start submitting your thoughts, and keep an eye on this first post because the likelihood is that this will be altered/updated in the next few days! And please remember, when considering stories for nomination or voting, review them! Lexie and Cuba PS. Last year's winners are ineligible for the 2008 award: Most Original Idea - Teacups are the Nemesis of Small Furry Animals by Hexterior; Best Extended Story- 100 Stories of James and Lily by Witblogi; Best Canon Story- A Marauder’s Thoughts by Cuban Sombrero Gal; Best Oneshot- The Dog Star and the Petty King by Jaye Black; Most Alternative Concept- Memento Mori by Lexie H; The Golden Laugh - Teacups are the Nemesis of Small Furry Animals by Hexterior; Best Character Sketch- He’s at Hogwarts by Padfootatheart; Best Drama/Tragedy/Angst Story- A Marauder’s Thoughts by Cuban Sombrero Gal; Best Romance- Side by Side by Sweet Sadie; Best Written- Il A Plu by SuGaRLiLy | #1 Aug 01st 2008, 6:40am . Kore-of-MythI have a questoin - are we only including stories that were written during this year? Some of the stories in the archive are older and I'm just wondering if there's a cut-off... |
Lexie-HNo, you're right Kore - anything is up for nomination, regardless of date. Obviously I'd prefer it if stuff that was nominated last year doesn't get put through the motions again for the sake of not going over old material, BUT there's no way to tell when stuff was added to the archive. If Cuba and I recognise a story as having been put forward last year, we obviously won't put it to the vote (and we'll let you know) but other than that - it's a total free for all! Remember to have a look in the recommendations archive too =) |
Kore-of-MythOkay. I wasn't here last year so if there are any that were nominated last year that's fine. Now, I'll nominate then...: I'm seconding Cubie's nomination for Most Original Idea with Too Many Faces -- For Best General I'm nominating A_Muggle_in_Magical_Britain -- For Best Drama I'm nominating Lost -- For Best Humor I'm nominating A_Well_Qualified_Witch -- And...oh there's noHorror category. Oh well...For Best Drama I nominate Slaughter_Dew -- For Best AU I nominate: Ten_Lost_Paths -- For Best Canon I'm nominating Making_Sense_Of_Senses |

WitblogiI thought I'd pop in and let everyone know that I uh I updated the winner banners from last year :P SO this is what you could winnn *vanna white style* : http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa80/The_Reviews_Lounge/the reviewers choice awards/awardwinner08.jpg I hope no one minds I updated the look of the Golden Bookmark trophy :) |

respitechristopherRock on. That's a great looking banner! |
Sandshrew777Here's a couple: - Family/Friendship: Beware the Jabberwock, authored by Lexie-H. - Best Review: Cuba's review (accidentally anonymously) for my story, Ten Lost Paths. An excerpt: "Too many authors fall back upon Luna for comic relief, what with all her obscure creatures and her inability to react normally to situations that other people find humiliating. You've taken her from ditzy dumb blonde and added to some of the deeper aspects of her character, which I enjoyed." (Edited because I fail to read directions.) | #10 Aug 05th 2008, 5:11pm . Sadie LovegoodIs the Sisters Black story I have in the archive ready to graduate already??? Geez, it's been in there since just after LAST year's awards and I really want another story of mine put in (granted, it's still a WIP). That said, I will nominate once i finish going through the rest of the arcive (I wont be a dip and nominate myself again this year), but I want to make a sggestion for another category (maybe for next year): Best WIP. A lot of really good fics are destined to be epic-length (i consider epic-length at LEAST 30 chapters). A really good WIP fic makes you really hope you get the alert that a new chapter goes up, and when it does, you read the new chapter eighty times. That's a pretty epic fic to do that, and tere are a bunch that I so long for to be updated. Again, sorry for veering off topic. *Goes to finish reading so's I can nominate). | #11 Aug 06th 2008, 5:42pm
Lexie-HLast year (as you can probably see on the 'exempt stories' list) we had best chapter fic and best oneshot, which Cuba and I are considering bringing back.... we just don't want to have too many categories, right? What do you think? | #12 Aug 06th 2008, 5:51pm
Sadie LovegoodWell, the more categories, the more fun it is, really. The Oscars have way more categories than you can think of, it's just msot of then are presented either during commercial breaks or they're just given out without a presentation at al and get a title card instead. It's up to you, you're the mod (begrudingly, I am not a mod, but unlike Charli, i couldn't care either way). | #13 Aug 06th 2008, 6:03pm
Lexie-HLol. I know, but we don't have THAT many stories that are eligible.... *shrugs* Mind you, you certainly have a valid point. Right-o: we'll also accept nominations for Best Work-In-Progress, Best Oneshot and Best Chapter Story! ... And while I remember, if we're not restraining ourselves category wise, how do you feel about two awards specifically for members of this forum: Writer of the Year, and the Encouragement/Most Improved Award. ?? | #14 Aug 06th 2008, 8:44pm . Edited Aug 06th 2008, 8:52pm
Cuban Sombrero GalI really like that one, although that would depend - we have a lot of regulars, and I know even I'm unfamiliar with a lot of their work. What about a best compilation story (something from any of our projects), and a most active forum member (someone who really makes an effort to make this place great), instead? | #15 Aug 06th 2008, 11:54pm
bonniedollWouldn't that last award automatically go to either you or Lexie? =P | #16 Aug 07th 2008, 2:46am
Cuban Sombrero GalNo, to someone that isn't a part of the mod team. :) | #17 Aug 07th 2008, 3:17am

bonniedollYeah, that could work. =) | #18 Aug 07th 2008, 3:47am

Sadie LovegoodWriter of the Year, and the Encouragement/Most Improved Award. That depends..what are the criteria for 'best writer'? I thinkwe ALL deserve that award, personally, and the category seems a little intense. You never know who could take things Siriusly. And 'Encouragement'? Let's not go overboard!! LOL, i just thought of one. "Crazied Poster." I think that one'd be a toss up between Charli and me....can you say 'World War III???" What with my Death Missles and her army of chainsaws....who knows what kind of results we'd get... | #19 Aug 07th 2008, 7:49am . Edited Aug 07th 2008, 7:50am

Lexie-HHmmm. I'd prefer to steer clear of Awards for Forum Members Because They Are Members of Our Forum - I think the Choice Awards should stay faithful to fics, writers and reviewers for their stories and reviews..... I do like Best Challenge Submission though. Let's narrow it down to 2008, as well, which means only the Valentines, Easter and Birthday projects qualify - what do you think? =) | #21 Aug 10th 2008, 11:51pm

respitechristopherI do like Best Challenge Submission though. Let's narrow it down to 2008, as well, which means only the Valentines, Easter and Birthday projects qualify - what do you think? =) Brilliant idea, actually. We had some really good stuff come out of those challenges. Perhaps the Christmas challenge could be added too, as it was done after the last awards. | #22 Aug 11th 2008, 2:54am

Sadie LovegoodBest challenge submission? Great! That means I have a chance at winning!! ^^ I WILL nominate soon, but I still have a page of fics to finish.... | #23 Aug 11th 2008, 10:30am

UndeniablyMeI have one, but it may have been done before. For Best Chapter Story: Here I Stand by Janiqua It's a story that's been done for a while now, so I don't know if it's still eligable, but it's an amazing story. There's 146 chapters that are each like 8 pages long. I think it kind of fits... :D | #26 Aug 16th 2008, 6:40pm

Cuban Sombrero GalWe're actually only nominating fics from our archive (which you can find linked to on The Noticeboard), but thanks for your input. | #27 Aug 16th 2008, 7:33pm

hondagirlBest Canon piece: Making_Sense_Of_Senses - - - Adventure/Mystery/Suspense : Lost - - - Best Canon Piece: Daphne Greengrass and the 6th Year From Hell(I swayed between putting this as Canon or AU, but I don't think it's quite AU enough so I went with canon) - - - Most Original Idea: Thrice - - - Family/Friendship: Envy - - - (Is it all right that I nominated 2 for Best Canon Piece? I think they've both been nominated before, I'm just seconding) | #29 Aug 17th 2008, 10:00am . Edited Aug 17th 2008, 10:03am

Cuban Sombrero GalNo, that's fine. :) In the end we'll just combine all the nominations, so we'll still only have one winner no matter what. | #30 Aug 17th 2008, 11:36pm

TheWordFountainQuestion: If you nominate a review, does it have to be a review to a story in the archive? | #31 Aug 19th 2008, 8:07am
Lexie-HNope - the reviews award is for a review that you've received =) | #32 Aug 19th 2008, 5:29pm
TheWordFountainSCORE!! -rushes off to find the review- All right. The review I am nominating is a review that was given to my one-shot First Muggle Friend. It was from hondagirl. The reason why I am nominating it is because this review completely changed my story. It literally flipped my story around and made it a hundred times better. :D At first, my story was very contradictory and hondagirl's review made me realize just how bad my one-shot was. (This is kind of embarrassing on my part). Excerpt: I wish the girls bonded over a doll, showing Rona that all girls, Muggle or not, are still girls. It would've reinforced her mother's statements. With her being confused by the lack of moving pictures and tv, it showed differences between the girls. I'm sure that's not what you wanted. Hondagirl was right. The whole point of my one-shot was to show that the girls were similar, despite their bloodlines. Instead, I did the complete opposite at the end of the story and just made their differences even more obvious. (Is it all right that I edited and rephrased this paragraph from the review to make it fit the 50 word excerpt? Is it also okay that I added in the reasons why I nominated this review?) | #33 Aug 20th 2008, 8:32am . Edited Aug 20th 2008, 8:48am

Lexie-HOh. Dude, can I just give the award for Best Oneshot to Cauterise now??? She so deserves that, nice choice Samara Wordy - that's fine. If it's just a general review you probably don't need to elaborate about why you've nominated it, but if there's something specific that really helped you, it IS important we know about it | #34 Aug 20th 2008, 11:42pm
TheWordFountainOkay, I'll just leave it as is then. :D Besides, I'd be too lazy to go back and delete all that. | #35 Aug 20th 2008, 11:43pm
The Awkward TurtleOh, I loved Cauterize... That was brilliant. :) I am still a bit confused as to how this all works though. :/ | #36 Aug 21st 2008, 9:52am
respitechristopherOh. Dude, can I just give the award for Best Oneshot to Cauterise now??? Best. Fic. Ever., that's for sure, but did it make the C2? I think it has about 50 or 60 reviews. There's more than enough room in the C2s for us all to express our deep and abiding admiration of all things Lady Altair, I think. | #37 Aug 21st 2008, 10:58am
Cuban Sombrero GalCrap, you're right, it didn't... she had another story in there. Basically Turtle, nominate as many fics as you want, as long as they come from the archive. When the nominations are over, Lexie or I will create a poll for each category, and then you vote. Whoever gets the most votes gets one of Wit's nice banners. | #38 Aug 21st 2008, 10:23pm
Lexie-HAre ANY of Samara's nominations from the archive??? *sighs* I shall have to check. Actually, Cubs I was thinking we should do the separate forum and polls under the RL profile, what do you think?? | #39 Aug 22nd 2008, 12:14am
Cuban Sombrero GalThat sounds fine to me, Lexie. :) Less work, that way. | #40 Aug 22nd 2008, 12:23am
respitechristopherAre ANY of Samara's nominations from the archive??? The ones I recognize aren't. Brilliant fics (well, one of them isn't my favorite, but that's been well documented elsewhere), but both the Than-Verse and WFH have 4-digit reviews. | #41 Aug 22nd 2008, 5:30am
Emerald OliveOk, I think that I'm doing this right. I've made sure that all the fics are in the archives, so I assume that I am =) - General: Twenty Pounds by Neutral Alienist - Romance: Metamorphosis by seductionandcandlelight - Drama: Sticks and Stones by the-original-hufflepuff - Adventure/Mystery/Suspense: Thrice by lyin' - Angst/Hurt/Comfort/Tragedy: Ashes, Ashes by Mrs. James Norrington - Most Original Idea: Ashes To Ashes by Athena G - Best Oneshot: Duty by statira - Best Work-in-Progress: Of Life and Lies by Emerald Olive (I'm not really sure if I'm allowed to nominate my own story, but it is in the archive, and I do need some serious encouragement. If I'm not allowed please feel free to ignore the nomination, I will completely understand) | #42 Aug 25th 2008, 8:08am

Lexie-HRight-o, it's getting about time to consolidate our nominations (collected from both PM and this thread) ... I'd love to receive a few more for the less-filled categories before we get under way, and ALSO, Cuba, you and I need to decide on where the multiple noms get to stand, since they can only be submitted in one category each, this year. And, finally - if you're part of the Mod Team, or part of the Archive Staff, or if you help run the LJ community, PLEASE pop in a nomination for Staff's Choice, because it's no fun when the single nomination gets the prize!!! As it stands, here's the list (sorry for the lack of linking, but I don't really have time at the moment.... rest assured when the polls are released everything will be linked!!) (Edit: sorry for the original squishiness of my list, I hope my attempt to space it out has worked!!) - General 1. A Muggle in Magical Britain 2. Defy (3 nominations) 3. It's a lovely chapter...but I cannot focus on a good review...*swears under breath* I think I'm gonna have to go to bed now...I'm sorry for my inadequete (sp) review! It's IS a great chapter... UPDATE! I MUST FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS! UPDATE! *does the update dance*" (Explanation: May not be the most constructive review ever, but it made me laugh hysterically!) - Best Oneshot 1. The Valley of the Departed Minds and Souls 2. Duty 3. When the Free Summer Comes - Best Chapter Story 1. Thrice 2. My Own Way Home 3. Eleven Years Later 4. Fools - Best Work-in-Progress 1. Family Bonds 2. Of Life and Lies 3. The Mercury Chronicles: Angelica - Staff's Choice Award 1. You Look Mighty Like That Muggle 2. Fools 3. Daphne Greengrass and the Sixth Year From Hell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All right - clearly, Fools, Thrice, The Letter, Daphne and a few others have multiple nominations for the categories .... and if, for example, we exclude them from all but one category the Mystery/Adventure category is only going to have one nomination again (since I'm sure they won't be chosen to stand in THAT category). I'm not sure what to do, here - last year we allowed multiple noms and these stories scooped the pool (*coughs* Cuba *coughs*), and we thought this year we might spread the love around a little further, if that makes sense. So here's what I propose: each story can only appear in ONE genre category. As General is not a genre, and rather, the best general story, this one is discounted. Does that sound fair? If not, feel free to make other suggestions! (Gaby, I already received your Staff Choice Nom, thanks very much for that =)) Oh, and finally.... since we clearly have some stories that have received multiple multiple nominations, instead of going by most-voted-for story to receive the penultimate Choice Award, do we want to throw all of these into a poll as well and you guys can pick the one you want to win out of them? Because I figure it will come down to these stories anyway, probably, and they're not all up against each other in any other category .... and since they've received so many nominations, it does seem right and appropriate.... ????
