I think the entire storymark feature might have disappeared. I never used it and don't know where it is, but I know two other people mentioned it being gone.

Not sure if it still exists though, so don't give up on it until you get confirmation. I'd PM support anyway though. That's pretty much how you fix bugs.

It sounds like it might be a bug. Probably site wide; I just checked and I can't get in either. Usually FFN puts up a 'sorry, we're fixing it' page when they take stuff down to work on it.

I tried the Document Manager earlier, and it worked. I'm sorry if I asked before waiting for a longer period of time. I was worried that I made a mistake on my account.

Darkwinter999

That's okay. It can be really hard to tell where the cause is if you haven't been here for years. Actually, I still wonder sometimes too. I just kno this site is glitchy, so usually it's something FFN needs to fix.

So, an update for the storymark:

Well, I e-mailed fanfiction.net. I checked to make sure I had an updated flash, made sure I allowed fanfiction.net to accept all my cookies. Then when that didn't work, I took their advice and deleted all the cookies. I went back and saw I didn't have them. I decided to go find the stories myself and low and behold, when I clicked on the link, my storymark came back. I was happy, and started to add my stories. Now, when I logged, my storymarks vanished. I logged out, but the option was still gone.

Fun, huh? But, if people are also having problem, maybe it is then. Or maybe it's Vista. Mine updated a few days ago. So we shall see.

#1704 Oct 09th, 1:37pm
Darkwinter999

Okay, if you got to see your story marks back, then they didn't remove the feature. It's a glitch somewhere, but I doubt they all have Vista. I'm pretty sure one of them would've mentioned having Vista, consdering all the bugs it's purported to have. But you're the first.

I hope they get it fixed soon.

I have just realized that there is no indenting on here, ok, but when I press enter to space my paragraphs it goes down two lines instead of one, making it very hard to write it well.

#1706 Oct 10th, 11:58pm
Darkwinter999

Is there a question in there somewhere?

Yes, FFN has no tabs and forces double spacing to make reading easier. I don't think anyone actually writes their fics in the FFN document manager. It's just easier to write it in a Word doc or whatever, then upload it.

#1707 Oct 11th, 12:24am
fireskull

When I uploaded it from word it automatically removed the indents.

Darkwinter999

Yeah. So...did you have a question?

#1709 Oct 12th, 10:39am
Saiyan5Nine-tails

I have a question: a while back, I put up a post about the DC character Jade in Blackest Night. Was it locked because it belongs in the DCU forum, not here? I only put it here because the DCU forum is rarely visited at all.

#1710 Oct 12th, 1:44pm
Darkwinter999

It's possible that it was locked for being unpopular. The current admin (Syrus Magistus) instituted a policy a while back where he'd lock any new topic if it didn't get at least ten posts within twenty four hours. I don't know if he is still doing that or not, but that could be it.

Or maye he just thought it didn't belong on a general forum. If the comment seemed to be directed exclusively at DCU fans, he probably thought it was better suited on a DC forum.

Try a forum for one of the more popular DC heroes that may have had some contact with Jade. You'd probably have more luck there. There aren't too many DC fans on this forum.

Have a question, how do you change the country setting. It says Guam but I would like to change it since I am moving. I looked every where on the settings page but I can disable it but not change it. Is it located somewhere else? Thanks

#1712 Oct 15th, 2:37am
Artemis Mitera

It'll change by itself. Um, the site traces where your computer is, like in the States or Canada, and puts that as your country. I wouldn't be surprised if it changes once you and your computer is settled down wherever you're going. :)

can someone help me for the past 2 weeks none of my alerts are being sent to me email and i tried emailing support from my hotmail but they havent responded. does anyone know a fast way i can fix this?

#1714 Oct 17th, 7:17pm
lilquackers77

Arian123,

Make sure your hotmail is not sending it to your spam box. I had hotmail before and all my messages where being sent to the spam box, finally got tired of it and switched to yahoo. Also make sure that you have turned the rating restrictions set to all, if you have stories that are rated M. Is all your settings that you want are set to enabled as well.

SASUKE'S PENIS IS ANGRY.

You have to make sure that the fanficton email address is on your 'safe senders list'. I had that problem when I accidentally clicked the 'junk mail' button instead of delete, and I had to take it out of the 'blocked senders' and put it in the 'safe' list.

Don't feel too bad. I did it before. Instead of hit the delete tab, I accidently click the junk tab.

How do I change the clock? Coz it is a little confusing that people are listed as having written at something pm today, when, as far as I'm concerned, there haven't even been any pm times yet today...

#1719 Oct 21st, 12:01am
Darkwinter999

You can't. The clock is set to Pacific Standard Time, the time zone FFN is based in. Only the people who live in that time zone see the correctly sync-ed time. You didn't know that? Huh. I would've thought you'd been here long enough to see other people ask that.

Anyway, it is a pain having to constantly do the math on it, I'm sure. But just think! FFN helps improve writing and math skills!

#1720 Oct 21st, 8:32am
ImagingThings

Well... I knew that it was set for the PST... but I thought you could change it the time shown for you in your account or something. But really... it isn't that bad... (actually quite funny when the time is set to be, like it was today, today something PM... when, as far as I was concerned it wasn't much more than 'round 9 am)

Something completely random:

I need a Beta-Reader to proofread my story, how do I do that?

Is there a forum or something where I can, like, "apply" for a beta or something?

:)

#1722 Oct 22nd, 11:36am
Angel Wings-008

Just search through the Beta reader index, and once you find one you think would be good to edit your story, message them asking them to do it. That's all there is to it =).

#1723 Oct 22nd, 12:27pm
Darkwinter999

I wish. No, there's no application process or anything centralized. You can ask people you know to be good writers (most would take it as a compliment that you thought they were good enough to help you) or just give a shout out in the forums and ask for anyone willing to beta your story. I found and linked several beta threads (and other helpful threads) which I put into a single post (second one) on my forum: http://www.fanfiction.net/topic/55353/11639643/1/ There's only three links for betas, but there's also other useful stuff listed.

There is also a beta request thread in this forum. I'd suggest giving the name, fandom, genre, rating, summary, expected approximate length (mostly one-shot, short multichap or long multichap) and what you need/want in a beta. Anyone who thinks they're anywhere close to that will PM you or post in the thread (different forums have different rules about beta threads).

Also, there is a feature that lists people who have registered as beta readers which you can access at the top of every FFN page (Beta Readers), but it's relatively new, so not all betas are listed.

Good luck!

Help somebody! I'm not even sure if this is being posted to the right place, but hopefully it finds someone who can help me. I updated my story today and posted a new chapter. A few minutes later it just disappeared completely and when I click on the link tha tsays new chapter it says the the URL is old or something. The chapter wen tup, I saw it and then when I checked again, it was gone. What happened there? And will it return? Should I upload it again? I'm thoroughly confused.

#1725 Oct 26th, 4:57pm
Ghost Writer no. 3

Try checking it again in a few hours. Sometimes it takes a big before they completely load. A friend of mine could not use the link to a story I'm writing for her. The next day, the link was working fine.

#1726 Oct 26th, 8:08pm . Edited Oct 26th, 8:09pm
Darkwinter999

Everything takes a while, depending on the load FFN is processing at the time. Posts take 0-5 minutes to show up, fics can take up to an hour to show up and new topics...shoot. I forgot how long new topics can take, but the fastest I've seen was around ten minutes.

FFN even warns you how long it can take for something to show up every time you post. Just read what it says.

#1727 Oct 27th, 10:46am
psyche001

Thanks a lot. It showed up eventually :)

#1728 Oct 27th, 11:02am
psyche001

The thing was... it appeared when I posted it, but then it disappeared after a few minutes so I got worried , but then it showed up again. So 'phew' :) Thanks for the advice though.

#1729 Oct 27th, 11:04am
Darkwinter999

What do you mean it 'appeared, then disappeared'? Where were you looking that you saw it appear? Your profile allows you to view all posted fics immediately with a preview, but what everyone else sees by clicking a profile or stories section link can be delayed.

I'm glad it's back though. That's the important thing.

#1730 Oct 27th, 11:35am
psyche001

Yeah I know it sounds odd..lol. What happened was, after I uploaded the new chapter, I got the email notification that the new chapter was up. It showed in the line preview and it even worked when I clicked the URL from my email. Then I logged out and searched for my story in the public listing and checked it there too to see how it looks to readers that aren't me and it was fine. (I do that sometimes...kind of neurotic I guess). SO the chapter was there, but then a few minutes later, it disappeared from everywhere....the line preview, the public listing, and even the URL in my email did't work anymore. It just....poof, went missing. So I deleted the chapter from the document manager and reloaded it - did the whole thing over again, but it happened the second time as well. The chapter appeared and then in a few minutes it went missing. I scratched my head like a monkey and fought back the insane urge to cry and cuss..lol. But then I checked Yahoo questions and saw that other ppl had experienced the same problem too so I figured it was a site problem. The chapter just reappeared for itself after a while after I posted the question on this forum.

I hope I made sense there in that story I just wrote..lol. Just glad it's working again. Kind of scared to upload again though. Thanks for the concern.

#1731 Oct 27th, 12:30pm
Darkwinter999

Okay, yes. Site glitch. Those happen around here. You kind of get used to it. I wouldn't worry about uploading though, you've got backups on your computer. You can always reupload and post.

Glad it's working for you again!

Otakuguy10

Hello. I looked all through this thread and couldn't find the answer to my problem. That is the limit of documents you can upload to the "Document manager" page. You see, I have a really long fanfic (lots of chapters) with each chapter counting as a document. With this and my other multi-chapter fanfics, this takes up all 15 slots of documents I can upload. This leaves no room for more fanfics.

I turned the long fanfics into giant, one-chapter stories to make room for more fanfics. It there a way to keep the neatly organized chapters instead of a big block of text? Thank you!

#1733 Oct 29th, 11:24pm
Mona Lisa23

Huh? I never found out about the limit of documents here. I never have more then two or three documents hosted in the document manager. And why would I? Once you've posted a chapter, the document is of no need any longer. I guess that is why the documents have a lifetime of 60 days. After that they will be removed anyway. You need not host all your documents/chapters, just the ones you want to put online. That's it.

#1734 Oct 30th, 12:26am
Ghost Writer no. 3

Yah, like Mona said, once you post the chapter, you can just delete anything on the document manager. The chapter does not need the original document uploaded.

As for formatting: In the past years, fanfiction.net has decided in their wisdom to cut down on their formats, which includes increase or decreasing the size of font. The only think to put breaks in is with lines, or use bold, italics, and underlines to signify chapters. I've also seen creative uses with keys like -_+=[]\~`.

If you still want your chapters spaced apart, my suggestions is to simply upload those fifteen chapters, and delete the oldest chapters when you need space for new stories.

#1735 Oct 30th, 2:10am
psyche001

Otakuguy, I know what you mean. After 15 docs on the document manager you can't load anymore. Don'tknow if it happens to everyone but it appened to me too. You have two options. First - The docs in the document manager are temporary and after the life span of each document is over (I think it's 60 days) it will be deleted. This does not affect the posted chapters however, those stay in the line up. So because the docs in the document manager are temporary what you can do is delete a few of the earlier ones to give yourself some room to upload new ones to the manager.

Second - This is the one I use - Export a current chapter to the document manager (In the story chapter line up you will see the folowing buttons next to each chapter DEL, EXP. ) Hit EXP on one of the chapters and that chapter will be exported to the document manager. When you go back to the document manager, you open the exported chapter and replace the content with the new text for the new chapter. Then you go ahead as usual and go into 'Story' , add new chapter etc...

That works for me.

#1736 Oct 30th, 9:14am
Darkwinter999

No, the document limit is on everyone. I have it, you have it, everyone has it. The reason is to save server space, I'm sure. Since documents in the manager are redundant and useless once you've publshed your fic/chapter, there's no reason to have more than fifteen at any one time. Delete what you've got. It's no help to you now--unless you wanted to change something.

Jynxed really needs to get back here and add this into the FAQs. This question has been asked over ten times since I've been on FFN, and that's just in the forums I post in!

Psyche: You don't need to copy/paste to post a new chapter. You can delete documents at any time by hitting the del link next to it in the manager. Then you'll have room to upload. Oh, you should note that if you don't name your chapters, you can only export one chapter one at a time. It creates all chapter ones by the same name, all chapter twos by the same name, etc.

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem or better yet has had it and knows how to fix it. I can login but under the headings (Publish. Reviews etc.) it is showing desciptions of the items (Document manager, new stories etc) and not the links to take me to that section so obviously I can't publish or edit my stories. I'm guessing it's something to do with the site restructure so I might just have to be patient but if anyone has suggestions I'd be grateful if you'd let me know.I've already sent an email to site support. Gail.

That's pretty much all you can do. Sorry. Yes, I've heard of this problem, and last time it was a localized glitch that only affected one user. I did not notice that problem and just replied to a PM ten minutes ago, so it may just be you and maybe a couple others. Pming support is about all you can do.

Now you just wait.

And wait.

And wait. :(

Hi Gail, I think that sounds pretty much like the troubles I had to experience a couple of weeks ago. I was able to login in and that was pretty much where it ended. I was only able to see the description but the links wouldn't show. However, at the same time whenever I wanted to log in I got the hint that my browser was outdated. And once I updated it, everything worked fine again. Is that an option for you?

Maybe it's still a site glitch, but I warmly recommend to try the update-thing.

Oh. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. Hmm, perhaps you have the chance and try to log in using another PC (mother's, brother's, sister's, friend's...). Should it work that way, you might see what's different with their PC and find out what you would probably have to change with your current settings. Good luck!

I am seriously about to lose my mind with FF.net. If it's not one problem it's another. Everytime I get over one glitch there's another just waiting to snag my @$S#$%. I'm pissed off right now so sorry if I'm over the top, but I need advice like pronto. My story has 41 chapters so far. I just uploaded #41 tonight. In my login area everythig looks fine. All 41 chaps are there and all my reviews are there, HOWEVER, when I go into the public arena and search for my story, it says that the story only has 39 chapters in the summary and the number of reviews are lower than it should be. So some of my chapters and reviews have been gobled up....BY WHO?! or WHAT?! What's worse....is when I click on the story from the public domain there are only 38 chapters on the inside and even LESS reviews. What's going on????? GEEZ!!!! Has this happened to anyone else?

#1743 Nov 03rd, 4:32pm

And we're back. It just fixed itself. So now I can temper down with a glass of red wine and a good story.

Try to contact the original author to tell them that their story got copied.

I don't know if the search engine is working but try to find the story.

The author might not know that someone stole their work.

#1747 Nov 11th, 9:42pm
Ghost Writer no. 3

If you can't find the original author, don't be afraid to simply report it. In the dissidia section, someone was writing stories about pictures they found on deviant. Which, would be fine if they gave credit, but half the time they did not give credit and in later stories they ripped off a comic someone wrote, but changed it around for their likling. I pmed them about it, but they said they though the series was funny, but they took out what they wanted. I warned them then and in a review to give credit, but they made no altercations. It did not help much that the stories were less then fifty words all toghether.

#1748 Nov 11th, 10:35pm
Darkwinter999

You can't write a story with less than fifty words unless it goes something like this:

Girl: "Hey."

Boy: "'Sup."

Girl: "You're hot."

Boy: "You too."

Girl: "Cool."

Boy: "Wanna go out?"

Girl: "Sure."

Boy: "We're out."

Girl: "Yep. Great food."

Boy: "Yeah. Wanna fuck?"

Girl: "Sure."

Boy: "Yeah."

Girl: "Yes."

Boy: "Oh yeah."

Girl: "Yes!"

Boy: "Oh yeah!"

Girl: "Yes!"

Boy: "Oh Yeah!"

Girl: "...Oh."

Boy: "Ohhh yeahhhh."

Girl: "...."
