Those of you who use the chat frequently know that I have been having issues with the server network that hosts our chat channel. Chatters who use the web access page at http://kpforum.pbwiki.com/WideScreen have had to use a reduced functionality interface because the server network cut off all access by the "pretty" web client without notice. I was hoping that Mibbit (the "pretty" web client guys) and Freenode.net (the IRC server guys) would iron out their differences after some time and I could go back to using the "pretty" web client, but it now seems likely that that will never happen.

Since I have had the switch forced down my throat, I have discovered that one of our regular chatters is a Mac user and the new interface will not work on his Mac forcing him to go to the "ugly" backup web client. On top of that the new interface stopped working on July 11th forcing all the web users to get stuck with the "ugly" backup web client. Freenode's reaction (so far at the time of this post) has been no reaction (apparent indifference). EDIT. It's working fine now.

So, I want to pose a question to the people of the forum who actually use the chat on a regular basis (which is why this is not a poll - so I can tell if you are actual users of the chat when you post your answers)...

...should we move our chat to a new IRC server network?

Please note that if we do decide to move, all shortcuts & automatic log-ins in PIDGIN & Chatzilla (and any other IRC chat clients out there) would have to be completely redone on the new network. Also anyone who registered their nickname on Freenode.net would have to re-register on Webchat.org in order to keep similar functionality.

I'm sorry it has come to a decision like this, but unfortunately it has.

At this point, I'm somewhat leaning toward moving us to a server network that actually seems to want us and after some turmoil, to get back to a chat room that just works without all of the complications or without leaving our non-tech and potential new users in a behind. A good web chat access always was an important part of my plan to develop and grow an IRC chat community for the KPforum--I wanted the uninitiated to get a "hands on" understanding of the benefits of the chat before deciding to attempt to set up a chat client program on their computer.

Sincerely,

GhostWhiter

First, as a fairly regular chat user I want to say thank you. You did a ** of a good job in setting that up. I've been surprised by how many people seem to be on the chat - some almost obsessively.

Second, as the Mac person in question you've managed to make me feel guilty. [sarcastic font] "Thanks awfully"[/sarcastic font] Just kidding. I can survive on the ugly interface... I probably spent too much time on the other and this has helped me cut back, while still dropping in to chat if I wish.

On the other hand, working with people who are more responsive to you would probably be easier for you than being blown off when you have problems. But it would be more work for you initially, and you've already done a lot...

Sorry, this is a stinking reply. You asked for input and I've said you should do what is best for you. Either: A. Continue with network that you know is a pain in the **, but where you've already done a lot of work; or B. Move to a network which [ironic font] might [/ironic font] be easier to work with, but you've need to redo a lot of work you've already done.

GW, do what you think is best. For the moment I am not on the chat for a while as I have found myself using it instead of writing at the pace that I enjoy. I found out the other day that I needed to get a move on and finish my current story line so that I can prepare another one for posting.

Thanks for all the work in keeping it up and running allowing writers to interact outside their story domains and build friendships.

I have no problem changing Pidgin, but one question: will new site allow for use of Mibbit?

I don't mind usin' a different chat client. Where chat goes, I'll likely follow. XD

Ghostwriter, as a sometimes chat room resident ( it can get way too addicting) I want to thank you for your hard work and dedication in giving us a place to meet and greet, as it were. It's been an interesting experience and I've enjoyed it tremendously.

Now for your server problems. I defer to your technical expertise in the matter. If going to a new server will be better in the long run then it might be worth the extra work for you. You know what you have had to deal with in the past. As a person who does none of the actual work but gets to enjoy the fruits of your labor. I'm in a poor position to advise you on how you should spend your time.

What ever you decide I'll support you fully. Just give me instructions on how to get to the new site.

I'm an infrequent visitor to the chat room, so my repsonse should probably be discounted. Easier is always better, especially if you're trying to attract new users. Also, personally, I'm a Mac user and haven't a clue as to what this ugly interface of which you speak is. So, I doubt I'd join the chat without a new server since it seems like a lot of work to do so.

BTW, let me join the chorus in thanking you GW for creating and maintaining the chat room.

Yes. I have already tested Mibbit on the potential new IRC network.

Keep it up GW. I truly believe that there are those whom living without chat is like what it is for a fish to live without water.

Thanks for working on it . I for one appreciate it.

Since this is the only chat I engage in, I have no problems either way. As long as I can find you guys if you do change it, I'm fine. Do what you have time for. Got to admit I liked Mibbit more, but who didn't?

Thank you KiY, Sentinel103, screaming phoenix, MrDrP, & everybody for the kind words.

I think I can better understand the appeal of yes/no polling. So far, the consensus seems to be a solid whatever (you think is best).

Just to let you all know, you need to use the back up chat client. I guess the main one that was being used on the web page based chat, that service has been cut.

I just saw MI's post and tired the http://kpforum.pbworks.com/WideScreen page. It seems to be working fine at this time.
