The Scarlet SkyTopic: When the Worlds of Fanfic and Reality Collide!
Aka, when you wonder why you told your boyfriend you write fanfic. Okay before I rant, I'm happy I'm in the position I'm in. I've had a good strong friendship with this person before officially dating, and because someone in heaven likes me, he's an internet nerd I can talk to about things like fanfic and deviantArt and Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged Series. And I told him about fanfic because we discuss my writing sometimes. At first I'd doctor my fics so that they'd be "original" short stories but eventually I was just like, "Okay I write mostly fanfiction about a bunch of farmers and villagers who struggle with cows and their romantic needs." And he's like, cool. Because he's awesome. Except now he's like, can I read your longer stuff? Cue embarrassment at sending the crap called "Drowning in the Tide" written at fifteen. I know he's mostly reading it to better understand me and how I've changed as a person, but I still feel squeamish at showing my early raw work like that. (A few of my friends in college write fanfic as well and are like, oh yeah I do that too with my bf/gf, and it makes me laugh at myself for being so sensitive. ^^;) Anyone else have stories like this? Or do you all fanfic away in silence? -.- |

sugarapplesweetWell, for me the trouble always starts at explaining why I play HM, so even before I get to the whole idea of fanfiction, I'm stumbling and getting all red-faced. And this is why the 'notebook girl,' as I've become known at school, rarely ever tells anyone that she writes fanfiction. It isn't so much the fact I'm writing about these characters that gets to me, but that I have interest in them at all. However, I do let them read what I'm writing if they ask, and that usually makes things so much easier to explain after the fact. My family and friends know that I write, though. They just prefer not to read, and I'm not about to try and convince them to give them a go any time soon. :) |

Moonlit DreamingI fanfic away in silence. Mostly. xD I mean, my parents know I'm, er, pretty big on writing (notebooks have become a common birthday and Christmas present), but they don't really understand the concept of fanfiction itself. My brother, on the other hand, does and thinks I'm very sad - but as he's always making fun of me, I don't think that counts! To be honest, I can't imagine explaining it to anyone at school that I don't know really well. I'm shy enough as it is. I have two friends who know I write fanfic, but other than that, I don't really discuss it much. I suppose if I was ever to find anyone like-minded, I wouldn't have any problem sharing my writing. And thinking about what you've already said, Sugar, explaining why I even play HM would probably be hard enough! :) |

The Scarlet SkyHaha, I remember at college I was like "I have to stop doing fanfic, that's not acceptable anymore" and two of my new friends start a conversation with, "So I had this epic idea for a fanfic..." I almost fell out of my seat. xD They wrote in other fandoms though, I had to explain Harvest Moon. It's hilarious imo. They totally get the appeal of it. Once you're hooked, you are there foreverrrr. | #4 Nov 11th 2009, 12:04pm . Edited Nov 11th 2009, 12:04pm

Mage the ObserverHave I mentioned that I'm one of those loser geeks who makes most of his friends online before? If not, now's probably the time. My siblings read some of my things, but only after I prompt them too. I don't know if that counts. I'm too afraid to show my parents any of my writing, especially since I feel I've lost a step or two since the move. I haven't really gotten in touch with anyone else locally, so... |
|
Ultra Drama QueenHmmm... I haven't really told many people, but I've told a few of my friends... |
|
Let Love InNo one knows I write fanfiction! A friend of mine knows I read it, but she reads it too. Not meaning to sound harsh, but at school I'm not the type of girl to read or write fanfiction, haha it would come to a surprise to many people! |
|
Thoughtless7Mmm, well, I got the nerd bf like you Scarlet, so they know, but I'm luckily in a fandom he's not in. XD *shot* A few people know, but they don't bother. /handwave It's just as well, it is, no one's in my fandoms...! XD |
|
The Scarlet SkyIn high school I refused to let anyone but my two best friends know. It was quite "hush hush," because like Let Love In, I was too normal for that. ;) I think college is just a totally different animal. And all my friends here write in the most obscure fandoms--although Harvest Moon is pretty damn obscure. The bf doesn't write fanfic, but he finds it totally okay that I've been addicted to it, so yay nerd appreciation? ^^; I find these replies fascinating btw. ^.^ | #9 Nov 13th 2009, 10:23pm

Ultra Drama QueenI have a few friends who have fanfiction as well, but they write in different fandoms. I might be writing for my friends animation thingy, but maybe not O.o | #10 Nov 13th 2009, 10:25pm

Thoughtless7My bf does read fanfiction and write from time to time. (He's not an aspiring writer but he's really good; he's on the site actually with old fics XD Shadow the Impaler. Writing skill has improved, it has, I've read a bit of his NaNo. ♥) I'm one of those geeks that just had too much social skill to fall into obscurity. XD I'm so blunt about being a geek that I really don't act like one, because I'm not shy, I don't look away, I'm not quiet, I just have off-the-wall interests. XP I'm an outgoing geek, we'll say. An obnoxious, in-your-face one as well. XD *shot* | #11 Nov 14th 2009, 10:54am

Chicken YukiJust High School, really. And it's mostly about fandoms none of you care about. It's not embarrassing, it's just you'd scratch your head if I tried to name a lot of the stuff I wrote for other than Harvest Moon. No noteworthy reaction, either. And I tell my Mom ABOUT my fanfiction, but I don't have her read it because a lot of it will go over her head... like much of my other fan fiction writing for anyone else I know in general. Maybe I could show my sister and brother-in-law the very few ToT works I've done, as they got caught up in the game somewhat. ...I'm just glad I had a few curious glances at my ORIGINAL works. I just kinda wish there was more visible care towards that... | #12 Nov 15th 2009, 5:47pm

Mineral town girlI have like seven of my my friends into my fanfiction, My best friend she moved but every time she calls now she's like "did you update the next chapteryet?!" haha( I got her hooked on HM, last year...we haven't been the same since...) With my boyfriend we play DS and DSi alot, so once I was REALLY hooked on HMDSCUTE, and he asked me what I was playing so I told him, he said it was probubly stupid, but then I told him about the DS version and I let him barrow my FoMT game( He played that one to death) and Then he buaght the DS one and now we both invite eachother over to our houses and just end up sitting in the corner playing HM. As fpr family, my brother used to love anime then I got addicted to it(He got me started) now he hates it, He liked HM I got addicted to it(HE GOT ME HOOKED AGAIN) now he hates it...he refuses to read them, My mom, is to flippen lazy in o=half a year she's read half of the first chapter!, My dad...can't read or spell or work with computors..., My granpa thinks aI'm a comedic genius, he read my Thanks Giving Story on thanks giving andthis is all you'd hear from him "HAHAHAHAHA THIS IS HILAROUS! HAHAHAHA! YOUR DUAGHTER's A GENIUS! HAHAHAHAHAHA! YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF THIS?" either he's trying to make me feel good or he's crazy(I think he's crazy...) | #13 Dec 07th 2009, 8:35pm

HoneyproseMy RL friend and I started writing fanfic back when we were 13 or so... she grew out of it, I didn't. XD My friends and family know I write--I let certain friends, and my boyfriend read my original stuff, but no, they're completely in the dark when it comes to fanfic. I'm just waiting for the day my boyfriend stumbles on my livejournal and finds dirty NC-17 fics about Jack Sparrow. Egads. As for friends I've met online, most of my online friends I've met through fandom and I'll gladly share fics with them. =D Edit: I haven't gotten too many responses re:Harvest Moon, mostly because a lot of the people I know on LJ are also a part of the Final Fantasy fandom, and so that concept of writing for a video game is no longer stranger to them. | #14 Dec 08th 2009, 3:10pm . EkoalekoHell no. No one IRL even knows that I WRITE. I mean, my parents think I dropped that when I was a kid, when I would fill up notebooks of stories and leave them lying around the house. Now I'm too paranoid to carry a written-in notebook around in my backpack or leave it on my dresser or to have my friends go on my laptop account and open up a Word document and... ahhh (shudder) I did, however, tell the girls in my cabin that I liked to write at camp last year. Only it was one of those "what do you like to do?" introduction game things and it was never brought up ever again. LMFAO. I just... idk. Writing seems so personal to me -- kind of like a secret. The fact that no one else knows makes it seem special and private, like my own piece of the world when I'm tired of the outside. It does make me smirk whenever someone reads over my English assignments and go all "woah wtfff" though. One day... XD On that note no one knows I play video games either... it's like a ** double life, I swear. o-o | #15 Dec 13th 2009, 4:08pm

DoubleKKOne of my guy friends recently discovered I write fanfiction and blackmailed my penname out of me. . It started with having my writing files on my desktop (not wise) and he wanted to read one of them. And, of course, it had to be my one attempt at a slash fic. He went to town on making fun of me for that. Sigh. Teenage boys and their immaturity. | #16 Dec 24th 2009, 1:15pm

DoubleKKAha, I did. For a while it was, "KKstemporarynamechange" X) I gave up eventually though. He actually seemed really interested in reading them at first, but its just for the teasing now. But hey, it could be worse. At least I haven't written any lemons. | #18 Dec 24th 2009, 1:21pm

Moonlit DreamingMy brother used to tease me, if ever I left documents open or notebooks lying around. It used to drive me mad, and I think he did it mainly for my reaction - which was crazy. XD He soon got bored though. | #19 Dec 24th 2009, 1:25pm
