Topic: So, what are you reading?

A place to generally mention fics that have caught your fancy. You know, the ones that you keep hitting "refresh" on to see if the author has updated in the last fourteen seconds. Maybe it's the story that you keep confusing with canon, as it makes so much sense, or it's the 400k word epic that you've lost three different weekends to, because each time you start you can't stop until you've seen it through.

So let us all know: what are you reading?

*rubs hands gleefully* This is the place for me! Zeus knows how much time I've spent rereading fanfic.

Where to start? Well in the Harry Potter genre there's the Dangerverse by whydoyouneedtoknow. Five stories I believe so far, several side stories, even AU's of the main series and other people have actually written fanfic for it. Crazy good - and yes, I do confuse it with canon at times. A must read for any reader of Harry Potter fanfics. Here's the link to the first tale: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2109424/1/Living_with_Danger

Warning: Extremely Addicting, long chapters and long story (50 chapters and Zeus knows how many words)

In the Disney Category, is this amazing Hercules fanfic called I_Wont_Say_It. It's hysterical - best laugh you can get. The best part is the A/N's - the author, Melora Maxwell has conversations with Hades that are just too funny. I'm currently rereading that for the third time.

Drats, was I only supposed to include Harry Potter fics? Oh well...I'm also reading everything by J.D. Allen over on FictionPress.

I've been reading these absolutely delicious Teddy stories that take place in his 1st, 3rd and 5th (WIP) years

http://humongousbighead.homestead.com/teddytoc.html -- first year

http://humongousbighead.homestead.com/moontoc.html -- third year

http://humongousbighead.homestead.com/mazetoc.html -- fifth year.

Brilliant OCs, brilliant canon characters... An amazingly well-thought-out universe here.

I've been reading lots of fic lately.

Some of the best are Disaster: See Also, Remus J Lupin, Love Life Of (Rc, that might even make you like Remus - he's not paired with Tonks at all, except for once), Bar Maid (http://community.livejournal.com/femgenficathon/35740.html), Moments (Ok, I'm betaing this, I'll admit to being biased), and there's more but I have to go.

What a GREAT idea for a topic!

There are those incredibaly fantastic fics that you keep reading again and again - wondering why since you actually got a lot of other things that have to be done. At the moment I keep rereading: Fox Ears and The Bright and Worthy King by The Starhorse - two of the best twins-stories ever written. Also featuring Charlie and Bill. Those two stories are so in character - they could be canon!

I've also spent lots of time rereading severeal parts of Bad Mum's Birthdays and Beyond (waiting for an update on that by the way).

And then there's Love and Levity by KatieBell70 - a George/Luna story, that is surprisingly in character. Absolutely worth a read - it's funny and entertaining! There - if I'll think of some more I'll let you know!

The Starhorse's stuff is amazing, I just love those stories.

Have you seen her (I think it's "her") art on deviantart? my Percy avi is from one of her pics, and there is an amazing pic of Charlie and the twins (from a scene in "Fox ears") that I have on my desktop.

Great idea for a topic, Christopher!

The "We belong" series by mj2007 are amazing. Post-DH AU, with George finding out Fred had a son that no one knew about; lots of plots and sub-plots regarding Amos Diggory and his second son CJ; Teddy Lupin; Angelina; George's relationship with his mother; George's marriage (not to Angelina!), and I'm sure I've forgotten something. Currently on the fourth story, and way overdue for an update.

We_Belong

We_Belong_II_In_America

We_Belong_III_Moving_On

We_Belong_IV_Growing_Forward

Anything by MBP, who does the best Weasley fics (usually angsty) ever. Her currnt ones - both brilliant - are Weasley_Family_Heartbreak (post DH AU where Arthur is teminally ill) and Charlies_Return set during and after the battle of Hogwarts/

And WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot's Daphne_Greengrass_and_the_6th_Year_From_Hell and Daphne_Greengrass_and_the_7th_Year_From_Hell (which proimises to be just as amazing as the first one).

There are more, but those'll do for now.

One thing it would be kind of fun to do on here, but my grown-up voice tells me we ought not, is to also mention those car-wreck fics -- you know, the ones that are dreadful but so much fun that you can't help but read them all the way through. I was reading a couple of ScoRoses last night that were in that category.

Oh, and for all of the other Coffee-and-chocolate devote(e)s out there, yesterday's rec "Stealing Harry," (a "what if Sirius got to raise Harry" with an 8-9yo Harry and some significant (and not at all work-safe) Wolfstar goodness) is absolutely phenomenal. I'll post the coffee and chocolate link sometime tonight from my home computer.

Oh, christopher, what car-wreck ScoRoses? I'm always in the mood for a laugh with that couple. I read one in which Ron almost killed Scorpius because he was so mad and then proceeded to disown Rose. It was like a soap opera but I had to finish it.

As for stuff I'm reading, probably one of the ones Bad Mum mentioned, "Daphne Greengrass and the 6th....". It's one of my favorites and I'm anxiously awaiting for finals to be finished so I can go back and finish reading it. And then I can start on the sequel. :)

I'll PM you with that, as well as the Honks-wreck I was flipping through ("Hi, I'm Harry. I'm sad 'cause Sirius is dead." "Don't call me Nymphadora. I'll help you cope with Sirius's death and with your aunt and uncle." "What's your real form?" "Hmm, that bed looks comfy.")

#11 May 15th 2008, 5:54pm
respitechristopher

Bleah. OK, I think I mixed up the pairings of the wrecks. The ScoRose I was reading is actually a classic: "Now or Never". On the other hand, I was reading a Hr/Fl and a Hr/G that were simply silly (and why I'd confuse ScoRose with SS MindsOnFire is past my poor understanding).

The Honks just kept on getting better. Author didn't miss a trick. Potter manor was in there, as well as Harry being called "Lord Baron Potter Black". Dumbledore and the other quartet players weren't just manipulative, they were criminal. Harry didn't just have a Griffon at Potter Manor, he had a menagerie that would make Hagrid think he'd died and gone to big-scary-creature-heaven. It was great.

Yes I agree, 'Now or Never' is easily one of the best Rose/Scorpius I have ever come across. It easily makes my top 5. And Cofee and Chocolate? I seem to remember people recommending fics from them before. Hmm...might have to go check it out. :)

I am reading a lot of Snonks (Snape/Tonks) at the moment. My favourite being;

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1751783/1/The_Forgiveness_Within

written by Kerry, who is magnificent. I would also recommend Innocence by Ceredwen. It's a Marriage Law fic with a Sirius/Hermione pairing and is absolutely great. It's still in progress but has such richness in there I keep going back to it.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3924523/1/Innocence

Also, check out Kerry's sequel to The Forgiveness Within which is Which Witch?

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1875930/1/Which_Witch

And finally. I've found a really nice one-shot of Sirius/OC during the OoTP. It's sweet and funny and also revealing. It's called Like Riding a Broom, and I'm sure you can guess what it's about my the title. Lol.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3895738/1/Like_Riding_A_Broom

These are all a handful of my favourite stories that I really want to share with the rest of you.

Kate :)

If you're familiar with Lady Altair's work, you know that she couldn't write a bloody greeting card without it being the best freaking greeting card ever written. This is the best thing she has published on this site.

Ugh. Just finished jbern's "Bungle In The Jungle" and got caught up on the sequel (title escapes me). It was recced in the "request a rec" thread by Brian, when someone asked for a Harry/Luna. Of course, he conveniently forgets to let us know that this is the one-and-only Harry/Luna in the whole Super!Independant!Just-turned-16-and-still-mourning-Sirius!Harry genre. Or maybe he did and I forgot to notice.

In any event, they are two very worthy Super!Independant!Just-turned-16-and-still-mourning-Sirius!Harry story, and the Super! aspects were done quite tastefully. He's even an ambassador instead of Lord- or Baron- or Lord Baron-. Bit heavy-handed on the bashing (usual suspects, plus the twins), so if you're squeamish about that sort of thing decide you'll get over it for a few hundred thousand words or move on.

Chase This Light, which is easily Lady Altair's best work to date, was updated today. If you're familiar with Lady Altair's work, you know that she couldn't write a bloody greeting card without it being the best freaking greeting card ever written. This is the best thing she has published on this site.More Malfoy goodness out today. A "Chase This Light" update always makes for a happy day.

Something else I've picked up: another H/T action-adventure. If you've read the seminal work in this genre, "Harry Potter and the Summer of Change" by Lorddwar, you'll be familiar with the premise. Summer after 5th year, Harry stops listening to Dumbledore; starts listening to the prophecy, becoming rather politically savvy and powerful, getting himself ready to face He-Who-Shall-Be-Hyphenated and getting some Tonksy goodness along the way. And if you're a fan of the genre, you've seen all the rather silly imitations of this classic, usually involving Harry getting some super-powers, becoming Lord Baron Potter-Black, finding out he's the heir of everyone from Merlin to Sonny Bono, breaking ties with everyone he's ever known because they're just Dumbledore's lackeys, finding keys to "Potter Manor" in his vault, ad infinitum et nauseum.

So far, this one's different. The Tonksy goodness is maddeningly (but probably more realistically) slow in developing. The Weasleys range from lovingly chastening (Molly) to fully supportive (Bill) of Harry's new assertiveness. Ginny is neither a fangirl nor a harlot. Ron and Hermione aren't suddenly Dumblespies, hell-bent on thwarting Harry's plans. There is (as of yet) no Potter Manor. Harry isn't suddenly emancipated. If there were to be a canonical telling of an Independant!Harry, this would be it.

Harry Potter and the Black Hearted Auror, by Darth Cious. Well worth a read.

Oh, christopher . . . apologies to ya! I've been all *rah-rah* for my boys. Sorry! Are you a Lakers' fan? If you are, don't read my profile! I've been a bit . . . er, spicy the past couple of days.

For recommendations, I'll rec RC's own The Mercury Chronicles. Awesome. (I need to review that fourth chapter though!) Love his Albus and Rose.

There's also JJ Rust's stories . . . heck, all of them! I really like "The Luna Effect", "Luna's Fenway Day" or any of his Luna stories (I love how he writes Luna, and I refer back to his works as I've inserted Luna into my story!), "Air of Disharmony", and I'm two chapters into "Shadows of the Past" and that's shaping up to be a good next-gen story.

Seriously, if you follow the Red Sox at all, Luna's Fenway Day is absolutely hysterical! I'll never look at Manny Ramirez the same way again.

Then my girl, stella8h8chang's works: Danse Macabre, rated T and Bellatrix Lestrange-centric (it's the only one that I read--for now) and Tempus Amat Volare rated T and features Albus as a teen, featuring a whole bevy of OCs and Gellert! I love stella, not only because she's been a great beta for me, but I really love her writing style--it's got a sort of poetic, smooth, sing-songy feel to it, and the English-Lit nerd in me loves the references she slips in. Any story that can toss in Bronte, Shakespeare, and Italian Opera alongside canon-appropriate references and historical context is all right by me.

And you can never go wrong with Bad Mum's works; she has totally reshaped how I saw Fleur, Percy, Charlie, and Bill. Love all of her works that I've read.

Though I share Christopher's disgust with the pathetic collapse of the Lakers in game 6, I congratulate you on your team's win, WTF. It is nice to see KG finally get his due.

And I second RC's work as high quality reading--it's certainly among the best "next generation" fics out there. JJ Rust's stuff is also good. I've yet to read stella8h8chang's work, but everything I've read of Katy's has been outstanding.

One I'm not sure has been recommended yet is AlianneOfTortall's very nice Backward With Purpose, a "way-back machine" story with Ginny, Harry, and Ron (!) going back in time to set things right. It's reaching its conclusion (she told me there's only 3 chapters remaining, which she plans to release as a unit today or tomorrow). Good fun.

I found this through a NaNo thread - Eflatun and the Magic Mirror - I've not gotten very far, but I really like where it's going. The format of reading is a bit different since it's posted on a blog, but it's got quite a bit of info so far. A neat take on magic - and it's on it's way to being an enjoyable read. It's complete and takes place in the Summer before 4th year. It focusses on a cousin of Draco Malfoy who's believable and not a Sue.

And trust me - I know my Sues.

Hi Christopher! To answer your question: I'm almost too busy to actually write my own stories lately. :-( I updated yesterday for the first time in weeks! (That's unusual for me!)

In case I haven't recommmended this yet (if I have, please forgive me for having such a bad memory) here's one fic I've really enjoyed very much. It's a George/Angelina and I promise you: if that pairing still doesn't work for you after reading this, it never will! The story totally convinced me although I'm usually more of a George/Alicia shipper. It's quite well-written, too, as are all the other stories by Aurora West I've read.

Sorry . . . I got sidetracked and I was going to respond to this earlier :-D

I've been on a tear lately with Ravenclaw fics, specifically Michael/Terry/Anthony friendship or shippy fics.

I've started mostly with Michael, since he's my other HP *boo, and hondagirl found a whole slew of them on LJ.

Link: http://community dot livejournal dot com/kaymbeefic/

Also, here on FFN, I've just started on Solo, a Terry and Anthony fic that explores the conflicts and friendship between Terry as a strong Christian wizard, and Anthony as a wizard with strong (orthodox) Jewish background. So far, I haven't been able to attack it due to some RL things and work and etc., but I really liked the atmosphere the opening chapter set up. And it's very dense, thoughtfulness.

I actually spent an entire week reading mj2007 "We Belong" series. It's all post DH-AU and Fred's son, who no one knew about, turns up 10 years after Fred's death and George takes care of him. But there's all these subplots in the background about adopting Al, CJ Diggory -second son of Amos Diggory, George's relationship with his mom, the professors at school, George's wife, Teddy Lupin, etc. It all made for a wonderful read and now I'm upset that he's on the fourth and final story.

This might not be for everyone, but nonjon posted another story last night that's worth checking out. I think I may have hurt myself reading it last night, it's that funny.

Two Heads Are Better Than One by nonjon

COMPLETE. OneShot. Either Fred and George played a prank on Harry, Harry played a prank on Fred and George, or they're all playing pranks on everybody. Although to be honest, it really doesn't matter how it happened. WARNING: crude, immature, ADULT humor.

Because of the nature of the subject and that those who enjoy this kind of story will have a hard time reading quietly, I recommend not reading it at work. Consider yourself warned, Christoper. :)
