GM AndyTopic: Overall Story Series Background Info: Or you might not know this, but you should! I'm using the novel Lungbarrow as a canon source: you can read the e-novel version at http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ebooks/lungbarrow/index.shtml Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter, was introduced in the very first episode of Doctor Who. She was the first companion to leave him, but not by her choice. After stumbling into a Dalek invasion on earth in 2146, she falls in love with one of the resistance fighters, David Campbell. The Doctor realizes that this is where she needs to stay and locks her out of the TARDIS. It's was intended that Susan and David have three children (written into the Five Doctor's script but not filmed) by the time she reunited with the Doctor after a twenty year gap. It is possible that she was able to leave earth at some point in a TARDIS stolen from the Master after he tried to kidnap her. Her location and health is unknown. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Foreman for additional information. Leela, Sevateem tribe, joined the 4th Doctor and traveled with him before he took on Romana. The population of her planet was steered in development by a mistake of the Doctor's when he tried to fix the central computer and cheated a bit. He ended up placing a copy of his own personality into the machine and thus altered the evolution of humans on that world. Genetic breeding and specie manipulation is revealed as one of his hobbies in Lungbarrow. Leela marries Andred of the house Redloom (Or Redred, depending on source). She and Andred conceive the first child born on Gallifrey in thousands of years, thus ending the "curse" and conflict with sister planet Kern. Her child is a boy and the Doctor asks that she name her son after him. Leela survives Andred who is killed defending Romana during the eruption of a civil war that may or may not be related to the Time War. She goes blind, but takes up her husband's position as Romana's bodyguard. She was last known to be living on Gallifrey by the Doctor but current spin off media indicates that she did survive the Time War. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leela_%28Doctor_Who%29 for more. | #1 Feb 15th 2008, 8:07pm . BalrogsBreathThanks for posting all this!:) Would it be possible to post something about the Kubla Kahn? Or would that be cheating? |
|
GM AndyNope not really cheating. Here's some info about the Kubla Kahn This ship is from the Chronicles of Riddick 'Verse. It is the setting of Dark Fury. If you would like to read a transcript of the 'toon because you've not seen it you can at http://www.angelfire.com/planet/gm_andy/page2.html (I've given permission to others to archive this, as well, but it is my transcript so please ask before you do so. Likely I'll say yes). Captained / Owned by Antonia Chillingsworth. Her planet of origin is left unsaid, however she does have implants and it's stated that Kova is one of the few societies that embrace cyber-technology (Although not to the extreme of becoming totally machine, instead they relish the grafting of machine to flesh). Crew consists of Junner, various techs, and numerous mercs. The vast majority of these guns for hire are held in cryosleep. This indicates that Chillingsworth has a contract with the Merc's guild to employ vast numbers of armed killers. However these men and women are not military trained, nor disciplined. Introduces Toombs. (I assume that this is where Toombs got his ship, Hunter, from.) Toombs is the merc that flushes Riddick out of hiding on UV6 at the beginning of Chronicles of Riddick. This is possibly a Kovan made ship. It has very advanced cryosleep technology. It is much faster than the Hunter-Gratzner. And the crew is able to stay awake while the ship traverses space, unlike smaller ships. It is huge. Rychengolls, or 'Golls, are known for their love of pirating, their devotion to twisted technology and fast ships, and their religion that calls for self-mutation. Imam calls the ship a "Plantation Operation". These ships are ones that travel from planet to planet filling up their storage with crops or minerals and taking the raw product to industrialized planets. They can spend years away from port. Antonia's take on this is just a bit -- different. In canon, the second ship used to get the survivors to Helion Prime is taken from the Kubla Kahn 's upper flight deck. Chillingsworth was waiting inside the chosen ship, so it might have been her personal escape vessel. If you have specific questions I've not covered please ask and I'll answer them. | #3 Feb 16th 2008, 10:11am . Edited Feb 16th 2008, 10:56am

GM AndyInfo about Gallifreyan Mythos: from http://meshyfish.com/~roo/docwho1.html (some of this is shamelessly taken word for word, no infringement is intended)Gallifreyans are Loomed, Brainbuffed, and Live nearly forever. Their understanding of mythology and fairy-tales of other races is limited. However, Gallifreyans believe that there was a creator of the universe. Their system of religion appears to be a mix of mythology and science. For example, "Old Time" legends and Gallifreyan mythology states that the Universe was born from a sentient singularity called Eru or the Great Old one Azathoth. At Event 0, Eru split into 10 dimensions (the Universe has 11 dimensions). After Event 0, the Mother Goddess used the Aurora Temporalis (anvils of heaven) to create and pour Time itself into the void of the empty Universe. With the exceptions of some Shobogan cults, the Gallifreyans do not worship either Azathoth of the Mother Goddess, nor do they do call them "gods," but they do believe that the ordered complexity of the universe points unquestionably to the existence of a creator. This creator's power takes the form of gravity when viewed from 3 dimensions. The primary Gallifreyan Gods are the Menti Celesti who have been worshiped since the Old Time. The Menti Celesti are made up of Pain, Death, and Time (aka the daughter of the Timewyrm). Other gods, not dating to the Old Time, include Light, and Life. The Gallifreyan Gods have the following colors attributed to them. Red and Black for Pain, White for Death, and a shifting Gray color for Time. The ancient symbol of Death is a red circle called a Regenerative Circle. About 25% of the population of Gallifrey worships Death, Time, Pain etc. Prayer to the gods is usually conducted by individuals in a private setting. Gallifreyans believe these Gods to be Higher Eternals but in reality they are part of the essence of the Universe. They are abstract universal conceptual entities, a non-corporeal beings that can control time and fate. Death, Time, and Pain might be the dreams of Time Lords who leak out into the cosmos. Time Lords in nightmares or near-death states sometimes make deals with them, sometimes to become their Champions. Early in their history the Gallifreyans came to believe that if they killed all the evil people in the universe then the good people who remained would become evil. Light can not exist without darkness. If evil were destroyed then good would vanish as well. Sin is not a concepts that can be found in Gallifreyan culture. Damaging History is about as close to evil as Gallifreyan culture gets. The number six is very important to Gallifreyan culture and is used in architecture, and numerous other aspects of life. It probably derives from the 6 Guardians (aka the Six-Fold God). Most Time Lords consider the six segments of the Key to Time to be a myth. The six Guardians may well be: Chaos, Order, Justice, Balance, Life, and Imagination. (A note aside, I've added elements to this for the purpose of my 'Verse, being Air, Earth, Water, Fire, Aether, and Void.) to further develop this is the following: White Guardian = Structure/Order/Light, Black Guardian = Chaos/Darkness/Entropy, Red Guardian = Justice/Morality/Time's champion/the Doctor, Azure Guardian = Equilibrium/stability/unchanging tenancies, Crystal Guardian = the Toymaker/Dreams/imagination, Gold Guardian = Sentience/Life. Note that the six guardians and the five physical dimensional properties make up the eleven parts of Eru. These are things that survived from one universe to another. The number 13 is important as well (stemming from the Fendahl being composed of 13 parts). Other Gallifreyans (including the Doctor) believe in The Great Moral Dialectic. It states that the Moral Universe refines itself towards goodness just as the physical Universes keeps expanding. This leads to the Ultimate superiority of Good over Evil. As of The Infinity Doctors many Gallifreyans worship Omega. He is know as the God Ohm. It is possible that Rassilon and the Other have also achieved some cult statue within society. Some Gallifreyans believe that the Matrix controls Gallifrey. Some even believe it created the Gallifreyans so that it would have an origin. Related to this is the Beliefs of the Elementals of Quintessa. They follow the ancient wisdom of elemental math, believing that calculations and balance is the key to the universe's continued existence. The Air Elemental, Aereon, says: "There is a balance to everything in the universe." They have so much need for balance that they have 33 different words for it. I have, because of this, cast them in the role of allies to the Doctor in the TimeWar and beyond. The Wiki has this additional Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elemental_(The_Chronicles_of_Riddick)#Elementals "The Elementals are a fictional race from the film The Chronicles of Riddick. The one that is seen in the film (Aereon) is humanoid and is seemingly composed of nothing more than dense air. She becomes transparent when in the presence of blowing winds and, because of her negligible mass, she can glide through the air for extended periods of time (This is often confused with an ability to fly). The novelization by Alan Dean Foster states that the Elementals are an offshoot of humanity. One of the Necromongers refers to her as an Air Elemental (which in classical ceremonial magic is what Paracelsus calls a sylph). And the novel also hints that there are fire, water and earth type Elementals; but no other members of this race are seen in the film. According to the DVD, there are also elementals that represent Aether. According to information conveyed in the film, the Elementals are a logical race, deciding their actions on complex calculations rather than on personal opinions or emotion. They are largely a neutral people, apparently unwilling to participate in the conflicts that they view as beneath them, but take action when their calculations show that their intervention is necessary. As to a religious point of view of the elementals the Necromongers point out that the elementals don't believe in any god." | #4 Feb 17th 2008, 8:49am . Edited Feb 17th 2008, 12:08pm

GM AndyGathered info about the Doctor's various incarnations, for personal reference. One Hair: White swept back, worn without a part. falls to the shoulders Eyes: Rich, warm brown Height: likely average but above 5'11" of #2 wouldn't be "short" in comparison, but I can't find specifics. I looked at a picture from "the three doctors" and he might be the same height as #2. (if you read this and happen to know send me a PM) General: The oldest of the Doctors at the time we meet him, but the youngest in age. Looks to be '60-ish' with 'sharp' features. Typical clothing includes an astrakhan fur hat, a cape or cloak, cane given to him by Kublai Khan (used as a prop and a weapon as necessary), a ring with a large blue stone (with various powers), an odd assortment of items, including matches, binocular spectacles, a magnifying glass, a penlight (but not money), and a Victorian or Edwardian styled suit. This body does not have the superior Time Lord features, as those are gained upon the first regeneration. Two Hair: Mop-top styled, warm black or very dark brown Eyes: light brown / grey-blue (depending on image) Height: self described as "five foot nine" in Underwater Menace; to 5' 11" (1.80 m) (Heh, thought he'd be shorter! Amazing.) General: A Rubber-faced clown, with a major gift for tricking others into doing what he wants while making them believe that it was all their idea in the first place... Wears similar clothes as the last incarnation, only a size too large. Rumpled and baggy his clothes consist of checked trousers, a disreputable old frock coat, a spotted bow tie, and grubby pocket handkerchief. Kept on his person is a recorder, an amazing assortment of gadgets and junk (including the sonic screwdriver, a 500-Year Diary, a magnifying glass, conkers, candy (usually gobstoppers, lemon sherbets, or jelly babies), an electricity detector, a normal screwdriver, marbles, pins, and a tuning fork. He also pulls out balls of string, fireworks, and half-eaten apples, and on at least one occasion he actually remembers to carry money. Three Hair:Silver, wavy, worn long and loose Eyes: Dark (I can't find a good picture that shows his eyes in clear color, I assume they are brown) Height: Height. 6' 3" (190 cm) General: Called a 'dandy' by the first Doctor when they meet, with his velvet and frills, he does give the impression of such. But with such a distinguished and expressive face (and large nose) who really gives a hoot? He looked good, for an exiled Time Lord. His clothing is elegant, if dated, consisting of a velvet jacket, a frilly shirt with a bow tie, sharply creased pants, and immaculately-kept shoes or boots. He generally adds a cape or cloak to this attire. And he knows to switch to practical clothing when the situation calls for it. Always on hand is a sonic screwdriver (and spare), sample jars, a selection of items used to perform conjuring tricks, a radio direction finder, a penlight, and a hidden file in his boot. Four Hair: lightish warm brown, curled, rather wild Eyes: very, very blue Height: Height. 6' 3" (190 cm) (heh... same height as #3, and here we all thought he was a giant, Lets say he's taller , eh?) General: A floppy hat, a baggy coat, a ridiculously long scarf, and a toothy grin... don't forget the Jelly Babies. In addition to the previous items he rounded out his attire with a vest or sweater, tweed trousers, brogans or buccaneer boots, the sonic screwdriver, a galactic passport, a cricket ball, a yo-yo, a selection of books, (including his 500-Year Diary, Oolon Caluphid's Origins of the Universe and a Tibetan language handbook), a magnifying glass, gemstones, handcuffs, an etheric beam locator, a picklock, a football rattle, a magician's cane, a clockwork egg-timer, a breathing tube, a barrister's wig, and an instant camera. Amazingly, this Doctor often remembers to carry money. Five Hair: blonde, straight, worn side-parted Eyes: dark brown Height: 6' 1" (185 cm), thin but athletic General: Dressed as a cricket player, youthful, but an old man trapped in a young body describes him best. He's one you don't want to get mad at you, because he may sound mild mannered, but once you cross the line with him and get him riled up he'll make sure you get your just rewards. Six Hair: blonde, curly, nearly as wild a #4, but not quite as long Eyes: Hazel (some images it looks blue, others various shades of brown, I'm guessing that the blue is actually greenish) Height: 6' (1.83 m), robust General: A bit of a bad regeneration... Dressed like, well... you don't want to know. It will blind you. Often unstable. Seven Hair: Dark, unruly, wavy, thinning on top Eyes: Steel gray-blue Height: 5' 6" (1.68 m), portly (the shortest of them all, and somehow he manages to look more imposing than most of those taller than himself) General: Casual but well dressed. a clown that could be rather obsessive with everything being in the right place. Used his odd looks and humor to disguise his darkness. Became Time's champion. Head of House Lungbarrow. Those around him might have gotten the impression that he didn't know what was going on, but this Doctor knew more about his past than any before him, and chose to take up the mantle he'd fled from nearly 800 years before. Known to carry everything but the kitchen sink (or sonic screwdriver) in his pockets. Usually has his umbrella handy. Eight Hair: soft brown, softly curled, worn parted and mane-like Eyes: Green Height: 5' 8" (1.73 m), finely boned (fits with my impression of him) General: Elegant, well dressed, and perhaps just a bit more in tune with his physical self than previous incarnations. Kissed a companion. Chased after elder Vampires, Fought in not one, but two, major time wars and survived the destruction of Gallifrey the first time. brought it back only to lose it again. Lost his memory more often than other selves, but usually because of medical situations or the entire Matrix was stored in his head... Nine Hair: brown, buzz cut Eyes: dark blue Height: 6'0"-6'2" (1.83-1.87m) tall and sturdy (earlier info indicated he was 6'2" and this was the data I used. Heh, I found the info again "His height is 187 cm, or 6'2"" from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Eccleston ... but bother, if he's 2 inches shorter I'll need to adjust...Meh... Ignore the bulk of real world facts, M'kay? My 9th Doctor is 6'1.5"-6'2". In contrast Riddick is 6'1" according to the character stats, although the actor might be shorter (Fan guesses for Vin Diesel range from 5'10" to 6'2", his 'official' bios are between 6' and 6'1").Interestingly, Cole Hauser is 6'1" but I'm sure Johns is supposed to be shorter than Riddick.) General: Dark, broody, prefers his plain leather jacket and jumpers to playing dress-up. More open about his past to the few he lets get inside his armor. Ten Hair: thick wild dark brown. Eyes: dark brown Height: 6'1" (1.85m) tall, but beanpole thin (I'll be adjusting this to the same height as the previous version.) General: well-dressed, pinstripe suits and a coat "from Janis Joplin" balanced by manic energy, bubbling speech, and a man who cannot sit still. Don't diss his use of sensible footwear... he does love his trainers. Been called "Scary"... Eleven Hair: brown Eyes: brown? Height: General: (more to come) | #5 Feb 21st 2008, 8:00pm . GM AndyRecently read a fanfic about the "Aspirin Allergy" and I loved it, but on further research I discovered that it was slightly inaccurate. Not understanding medical terms might be the cause of this. So I decided to post here about the realistic Human body reactions to the described terms.First off the site Rassilon, Omega, and that Other Guy (http://meshyfish.com/~roo/docwho1.html) has this to say about Aspirin: "Aspirin is incredibly toxic to Gallifreyans. The allergic reactions happen when aspirin begins to interfere with their genetic structure causes massive a pulmonary and cerebral embolism severe enough to prevent regeneration. Even touching it can be dangerous." First off what exactly is "Aspirin"? It's acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Or the synthesized version of Salicylic acid found in willow bark. Aspirin was the first-discovered member of the class of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), not all of which are salicylates, although they all have similar effects and most have some mechanism of action which involves non-selective inhibition of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (Cyclooxygenase (COX) is an enzyme (EC 1.14.99.1) that is responsible for formation of important biological mediators called prostanoids. What this boils down to is that the enzyme causes inflammation and that Aspirin blocks it). this compound is metabolized in the Liver through the process of esterase hydrolysis (or the breakdown of the acid into other acids, alcohol and water). In humans, overdosing on or being hypersensitive to Aspirin can have the following effects: Aspirin overdose has potentially serious consequences, sometimes leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Patients with mild intoxication frequently have nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, tinnitus, and dizziness. More significant symptoms occur in more severe poisonings and include hyperthermia, tachypnea, respiratory alkalosis, metabolic acidosis, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, hallucinations, confusion, seizure, cerebral edema, and coma. The most common cause of death following an aspirin overdose is cardiopulmonary arrest usually due to pulmonary edema. * Itchy skin, hives or rashes * Stomach pain/upset stomach * Asthma and other breathing difficulties * Headaches * Swelling of hands, feet, eyelids, face and/or lips * Bed wetting or urgency to pass water * Mouth ulcers or raw hot red rash around the mouth * Persistent cough * Changes in skin color/skin discoloration * Fatigue * Sore, itchy, puffy or burning eyes * Sinusitis/Nasal polyps * Diarrhea * Nausea * Hyperactivity * Memory loss and poor concentration * Depression * Pseudo-anaphylaxis (drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing, and/or the following minor: polyuria, respiratory distress, hypotension (low blood pressure), encephalitis, fainting, unconsciousness, urticaria (hives), flushed appearance, angioedema (swelling of the lips, face, neck and throat), tears (due to angioedema and stress), vomiting, itching, diarrhea, abdominal pain, anxiety) Anaphylaxis is a severe, whole-body allergic reaction. After an initial exposure to a substance like bee sting toxin, the person's immune system becomes sensitized to that allergen- Shocking dose. On a subsequent exposure, an allergic reaction occurs. This reaction is sudden, severe, and involves the whole body. Tissues in different parts of the body release histamine and other substances. This causes constriction of the airways, resulting in wheezing, difficulty breathing, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Histamine causes the blood vessels to dilate (which lowers blood pressure) and fluid to leak from the bloodstream into the tissues (which lowers the blood volume). These effects result in shock. Fluid can leak into the alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs, causing pulmonary edema. Hives and angioedema (hives on the lips, eyelids, throat, and/or tongue) often occur. Angioedema may be severe enough to block the airway. Prolonged anaphylaxis can cause heart arrhythmias. But how does it impact a Gallifreyan? What is pulmonary and cerebral embolism? The answer may surprise you. An embolism is a blockage of a blood artery or vein. Pulmonary would be 'to the lungs' while Cerebral would be 'to the brain' More important than the clotting (which is the exact opposite problem humans have as Aspirin acts as a blood thinner) is the fact that the compound attacks the genetic structure and interferes with the regenerative process. It might even prevent natural superior Gallifreyan healing abilities. Here's what the effects of Aspirin would be then on any Time Lord or Gallifreyan that comes into contact with it: blockage of the pulmonary artery (to the lungs) Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain in the chest during breathing, and in more severe cases collapse, circulatory instability and sudden death. sudden-onset dyspnea (shortness of breath), tachypnea (rapid breathing), chest pain of "pleuritic" nature (worsened by breathing), cough, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), cyanosis (blue discoloration, usually of the lips and fingers), collapse, and circulatory instability. About 15% of all cases of sudden death are attributable to PE. Symptoms of an arterial embolism include: * severe pain in the area of the embolism * pale, bluish cool skin * numbness * tingling * muscular weakness or paralysis Common symptoms of a pulmonary embolism include: * labored breathing, sometimes accompanied by chest pain * a rapid pulse * a cough that may produce sputum * a low-grade fever * fluid build-up in the lungs Less common symptoms include: * coughing up blood * pain caused by movement or breathing * leg swelling * bluish skin * fainting * swollen neck veins Blockage of the cerebral vessels (to the brain) An arterial embolism in the brain (cerebral embolism) causes stroke, which can be fatal. An estimated 5-14% of all strokes are caused by cerebral emboli |

GM AndyI need to clarify the elementals/Guardians/Champion bit. Here's what I've managed to piece together:The six Guardians: Chaos, Order, Justice, Balance (Physical), Life, and Imagination. The six Elements: Air, Earth, Water, Fire, Aether, and Void The Six "Gods" (Elder Eternals): Time, Death, Pain, Life, Light, Devourer (Fendric), Although Fendric was not worshiped on Gallifrey where Ohm (Omega) replaced him with a positive element. Six colors: white, black, red, blue, crystal, gold. Each of the Elder Eternals had a champion: Time's was the Doctor. Death's was the Master. Pain, Light, and Life are the remaining three that would have them, as Fendric was destroyed by his champion The Old One and I assume that Ohm didn't have one as he wasn't really an Eternal. So here's how this works out: * White Guardian = Structure/Order/Light, white, light, Air, champion ? (I'd love this to be Romana. Wouldn't that be cool for her to have survived?) * Black Guardian = Chaos/Darkness/Entropy, Black, Void (? This fits the destructive properties of Fire, really... if you think of the black as being ashes), Death, Champion- The Master (color does not match the Gallifreyan mythos which has death as white) * Red Guardian = Justice/Morality/Time's champion/the Doctor, Fire (? Could this be void? Is void black? Why can't it be some other color? Oh, right logic says black is the absence of color like Void is the absence of matter. Anyway...) (the Doctor is really a combination of elements, being a Storm. But he needs others around him to maintain his energy. A storm needs light, heat, water, air, just to form. And to be truly powerful it needs to be grounded. So while I have the Doctor's natural element as Water, he has the unique ability to blend and thrive on the blending of elements given to him by others. * Azure Guardian = Equilibrium/stability/unchanging tenancies, Blue, water?, (Possible replacement for Ohm) Champion- ? Jack Harkness / Face of Bo ? * Crystal Guardian = the Toymaker/Dreams/imagination, Earth, Pain? (I'm using this for Riddick, so meh) * Gold Guardian = Sentience/Life. Gold, Aether, Life, Champion- ? Possible Rose/Verity/Bad Wolf ? | #7 Mar 02nd 2008, 10:50pm . Edited Mar 03rd 2008, 6:07pm

GM AndyAnother e-book source that has good info, even if you'd rather use the 10th doctor story of it instead of the 7th, is Human Nature You can read it at : http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ebooks/human_nature/index.shtmlI'm not taking the entire book as canon, but the TARDIS's name comes from here, as well as some of the references to the look of her when she appears in 'human' form (which oddly enough no one has asked me about yet). Descriptions of Pain, Death, Time, and such might find a bow here (although those who know Riddick mythos should have figured out that Pain is Shirah, but anyhow). Just thought I'd put that out there. |

GM AndyPeople have wondered where I get the second Doctor/Jamie vibes from.Well... from watching the series where the pair interact (which I have on video). If you haven't been able to see these two actors together on screen then there's a great video on youtube that shows a lot of the interactions and chemistry between the pair. The actors were clearly on good terms with each other and enjoyed working together. They also had quite a good time pushing the envelope with what they could get away with between the characters. Anyhow: Video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrXaYjeWkZE Notice that there's a lot of touching. Leaning into each other's personal space, arms around the shoulders, holding hands, heads in laps... yeah. Just watch it. You'll see. |

GM AndyAU 'Verse info.Blue Sun system info from canon sources. "The two worlds that make up the "core planets" (the first worlds to be terraformed) are Sihnon, a mostly East Asia-themed planet, and Londinium, a world with mostly American and Western Europe influences. The alliance of the two worlds leads to up a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious universe. The Alliance seems to have some elements of a monarchy. In "Serenity", Malcolm Reynolds (Serenity's captain) said "I'd like to be king of all Londinium" and many of Inara Serra's customers are Lords. However, "King of all Londinium" may just be a catchphrase (ie, "king of the world" in modern usage) and Lord could merely be a positional title (such as modern judges in Britain). In Serenity, the movie set in the Firefly universe, it is revealed that the Alliance is run by a branch of the government called the Parliament. It appears that this Alliance was a melding of the People's Republic of China and the United States of America. Generally, the Alliance is rather authoritarian, although Joss Whedon, the series' creator, has said this is at least partly due to the fact that the show is seen from the viewpoint of those hostile to the Alliance. Whedon himself admits that sometimes, the Alliance is like the USA in World War II: doing very good things, helping people, spreading democracy. At other times the Alliance can tend towards black ops and power-grabbing, although rarely more so than any other real-world democracy. It is a government run by bureaucratic rules. Corporate influence is high, the prime example of "Blue Sun", a powerful corporate conglomerate Whedon has compared to "Coca-Cola or Microsoft" and which owns "at least half the government". A lesser example is the Weyland-Yutani corporation of Alien fame, whose logo can be seen on certain Alliance weapons. In Serenity, the Alliance also relies on local security companies to serve as the Alliance presence. Due to the melding of American and Chinese influences in the Alliance, most people in the Firefly universe are equally adept in speaking both English and Chinese; some characters on the show speak Chinese at times (usually when using obscenities, so Whedon wouldn't have to bleep anything out and ruin the suspension of disbelief), and many signs are printed in both English and Chinese. Additionally, during the episode "Out of Gas", Serenity's warning messages over the intercom are repeated in both English and Cantonese. The Chinese spoken is based on Mandarin (intermixed with Cantonese), but the pronunciation is heavily corrupted from the real-world language by the actors. The Alliance operates a massive fleet of spaceships, resembling huge floating cities, that act as both military and police for the distances between the various planets of the Firefly Universe. Alliance ships have the registry prefix IAV (Interstellar Alliance Vessel). Examples include the IAV Dortmunder and IAV Magellan. The pilot episode of the series reveals that the large city-ships carry smaller craft referred to as 'gunships', though the gunships themselves are never identified and their specific characteristics are never revealed. In the episode "Bushwhacked", we learn that Alliance ships have nurseries, suggesting that there might be even more civilian facilities aboard. In the film Serenity, we see a fleet of sleeker, more streamlined warships, suggesting that the Alliance has a wide variety of space vessels for various purposes. Alliance ground troops are nicknamed "purple bellies" (in contrast to the Independent "browncoats"). They wear armor similar to that worn by the Mobile Infantry in the movie Starship Troopers (the makers of Firefly used leftover costumes from that movie). Crewmembers on Alliance starships wear gray uniforms resembling those worn by Imperial German Army from the First World War; officers and enlisted crew are identically dressed (except for headgear: officers wear hats, enlisted crew wear berets). In Serenity, Alliance crew members wear blue uniforms. The exact structure of the Alliance military, such as its rank system and branch organization, is not identified within the series or the film. Some Alliance officers have been seen with naval ranks, such as Commander, and others with ground-based ranks such as Colonel and General." GM AndyThe Doctor's TARDIS 'historical' info... (Gleaned from http://meshyfish.com/~roo/docwho1.html) Anything taken word for word I apologize for, I'll work on rewriting the info. I wanted to get this down someplace before I 'lost' it. This only covers up to An Unearthly Child by design. Much of this I'll refer to and summarize from Verity's point of view in a story I'm working on now. So -- enjoy. 980 years after the Eye of Harmony is installed, 13 ancient weapons made of Validium acquire 'Critical Mass' and become sentient. One of these becomes the singularity at the heart of the TARDIS called 'Ship' because she refuses to identify herself. 'Ship', like the Master's primary TARDIS, Lotila (the Master is bonded to no less than seven TARDIS, at Lotila's insistence and blessing) knows she is different from the other forming singularities from the start. The pair of intelligences along with 11 others avoid capture within block transfer equation strings for over two million years. One is never caught, becoming the Temporal Event that is I. M. Foreman's Junkyard and later his/her 'Universe in a bottle'. (I. M. Foreman is an ancient Gallifreyan priest that managed to get Rassilon's Immortality Factor. The Temporal Event caused him/her to exist in all 13 bodies concurrently). 8982 years before the Doctor was Loomed into the House Lungbarrow, some of these intelligences allow themselves to finally be caught under the guidance of Marnal. Marnal was a distant 'uncle' to the Doctor, related to him through his mother's mother. He might have been from the house of Oakdown. He is given permission to Hyper Loom a number of unique experimental TARDIS, ranging over time from type 40 through type 49. He takes the first TARDIS, 'Ship' for his own use. She is a 'state of the art' type 40 capsule at the time of her creation. He never upgrades her from a Mark I. She refuses to communicate with him or indicate that she is special in any way while he is imprinted upon her. Just over 3 months after the Doctor is Loomed, Castellan Marnal bribes a Traffic Control Officer and leads a group of 3 TARDIS to the Shoal in the Stellian Galaxy with the intent of preempting the development of the predicted 'Enemy' that would threaten Gallirey. His mission is unsuccessful, creating an aggressive mindless version of the Vore. Upon his return his family chose to 'retire' him by taking him to 19th century earth and leaving him with the Doctor's grandmother. Marnal is in his 12th life at this point. 'Ship' is left to gather dust once the Doctor's father returns to Gallifrey. (research indicates that The Doctor was born to a human mother from the 49th to 51st the century (?) who was Time Aware and had constructed her own TTC. The Gallifreyan who found her in 1888 brought her to his home. For reasons unknown her mother also lived in 1888 England. Were they part Gallifreyan from the survivors of Rassilon's Great Purge? Their child may have been born then placed back into the House Loom and reloomed, fusing with the emerging awareness of the Other (the seventh Doctor claimed to have been 'born from the womb, twice'). This was done to hide his birth which would have been illegal. Marnal knew this had been done and threatened to expose the child's origins). When the Doctor is 236 he graduates from the Time Lord Academy. Upon graduation he, and his fellow classmates, are taken to Mount Plutarch to meet the Kingmaker. While there they are presented to the assembled TARDIS. 'Ship' choses one 'Theta Sigma' as her pilot. Her sister, Lolita thinks that Ship has gone mad, and that this young Time Lord is too. (Note, at some point the Doctor suffers from a severe catabolism. This takes place either before his graduation or within the the fifty years following it. I'm inclined to place it after he's imprinted because the results of the attack are drastic and horrible, and I doubt the Time Lords would have allowed him a TARDIS with as sickly as he was left. The severe catabolism does not kill him, but he suffers from the loss of dexterity and acrobatic skill and possibly mental power. One of his highest scores was in telepathy and mental abilities, and he states that this has degenerated in his 'old age'. The other side effects are terrible back pain, stiffness, vulnerability to altitude sickness, shortness of breath. and a general fragility. His formerly Eidetic memory may have been impacted as well, but this is not why he graduated with a 51% on his second try. Just for information: A catabolism is a metabolic reaction. If the body is unable to use consumed food it will turn to muscle and other tissues as a last ditch survival mechanism. Literally his body began to consume itself. Could it be that his human genes caused him to reject Gallifreyan foods?) Shortly after he gains his TARDIS, the Doctor is allowed to travel a little. His travels are short because he's serving out his 500 year sentence for stealing a type 18 TTC long before he graduated while working a regular job and trying to get a post doctorate degree. Because of his personal reputation and his TARDIS's reputation none of the colleges are willing to hire him or allow him to attend classes. He has his first encounter with a Vortex Rupture. The Doctor designs the Primary (Season 14) Console Room with wood and brass. Upon reaching 249 he has his TARDIS given its 500 year checkup and months later it's voice-interaction circuits break. When the Doctor is 259 Type 40 TTC's are reclassified as "Veteran and Vintage Vehicles". After this he manages to become a Technician, with partial access to the Matrix. He becomes good friends with others in this capacity. He proposes using Telepathic Circuits to create a Voice Integrator. Such a device would be able to translate all vocal languages, which up to this point were untranslatable. A Time Lord named Therde invents a functioning Voice Integrator which can translate any language within a few years after the proposal is made and the Doctor is able to fit his TARDIS with one. By the time the Doctor turns 275 he seems to have recovered enough from his 'illness' that he's climbing in Gallifreyan society. Perhaps under his TARDIS's influence he begins to live his life by "Omega's values", including using time travel to make the universe a better place. He believes one should alway search for truth. The Doctor speaks out and claims that the Time Lords should use their great powers to help the lesser races. The Doctor fights darkness, evil, pain, death, and sorrow but he can never defeat them utterly for fear that himself or others will become evil. The Doctor dislikes weapons but admits they are useful sometimes. He garners enough support for his views that his climb is rapid. At 284, the Doctor is appointed to the prestigious and distinguished position in in the Prydonian Chapter house's Bureau of Possible Events. He serves on the High Council for many years. He observed the Universe and ensured no violations of the Laws of Time occurred. At this point many believe that the Doctor will eventually become Lords President of Gallifrey. Choosing to work within the laws of his society his protests lead to the banning of a Disruption Agent invented by another Time Lord. This agent converts vertebrate blood into acid. The Doctor is sent to the inauguration of the Chimera J7 Space Station in the Third Zone to represent the Time Lords and present fraternal greetings from the High Council. Other Time Lord technicians pilot the TARDIS for him but he makes notes of how they operate the ship. At 306, The Doctor petitions to have the Miniscopes banned by Intergalactic Law in 9 Galaxies because they are an offense against sentient lifeforms. He is successful. Then the political winds change and his advocation for intervention begins to fall on deaf ears. He attempts to convince the Time Lords to prevent Agonal's interference with human history. When that fails he tries to prevent it himself and is recalled through the use of the TARDIS recall circuit. This incident leads to a series of incidents that gains him a reckless, discontented, and skeptical reputation. His attitude leads to the Doctor's removal from his position of prestige at the Prydonian Chapter house's Bureau of Possible Events. He claims to have left voluntarily. When the Doctor is 309 the Time Lords decide they have had enough of his attitude. They turn their attention to his TTC and discover that she is unruly and headstrong. After questioning too many instructions the Doctor’s Type 40 TARDIS is forbidden to travel until the Time Lord Corps of Engineers repair it. Among the scheduled services are repairs to the Time-Mechanism and a Chameleon Conversion. Both of these require advanced equipment to repair. It is brought to a dry dimension dockyard. At this point TARDIS's default shape is a black pyramid with a narrow door. To further punish the Doctor Lungbarrow reclaims ownership of 'Ship' although none of the other members can imprint upon it. Having lost his ownership of the TARDIS, the Doctor's status slides further. He is not technically a full Time Lord anymore. The Eye of Harmony in the Doctor's TARDIS is opened to de-energize it and place it in hibernation. Eventually the TARDIS is retired and due for the breakers to be scrapped. Desperate for a job the Doctor becomes a Scrutationary Archivist. After 27 years 'Ship' decides to renegade against TARDIS society because of a disagreement she has with Mother. This disagreement is rooted in the classic 'what came first' argument with Mother (the Matrix?) claiming to have created the Time Lords so that she would have her own point of creation. 'Ship' on the other hand remembers a time before and thus believes that both the creation of Mother and TARDIS was simultaneous with the creation of the Time Lords. The same year sees the Hand of Omega escape the Relic Room and locate the Doctor after his application for advancement to the position of Off-World Ambassador is rejected by the Registrar of Continual Observation. The state of the art TARDIS at this time is a Type 53. Within a few days he's confronted by Glospin and his frustration with the conformity of life on Gallifrey flares into anger with the High Council for refusing his requests leads to his plotting to leave. A final straw is the brewing revolution incited by Koschei. He beleives his personal truth lies in the stars. As a last strike against his House the Doctor informs the Cardinal Prime of the Prydon Chapterhouse that the House of Lungbarrow has more than 45 cousins. Dressed in Patrexian robes he sneaks into a TARDIS repair bay in a TT embarkation port on Under-Level 15 of the Citadel. He brings only a small bag of items with him. Ignoring the first seven modern TARDISes, he heads to and illegally borrows the 8th, which is 'Ship'. The Hand of Omega activates and takes control of the TTC. Because he stole the TARDIS, the repairs to the Main Time-Mechanism and a Chameleon Conversion were not completed (although Chameleon Circuit continues to function for some time). In order to ensure Susan's safety the Hand of Omega breaches the Back Time Field Buffers and takes the Doctor into Gallifrey's past so he can rescue her. After a quick detour to insure Susan's birth in the recent past. The Hand of Omega brings the Doctor back to Gallifrey's past to find Lady Larn (aka Susan) living on the streets of ancient Gallifrey. She recognizes the Doctor as her grandfather and demands to go with him. The Doctor, Larn and the TARDIS flee Gallifreyan culture and society. In the tradition of Gallifreyan renegades they renounce their names of Theta(cubed) sigma x(squared) and Larn. The TARDIS begins waking up from its hibernation. This revival might occur if the Hand of Omega ceased to be a power source for the TARDIS. The Doctor now has to familiarize himself with how to operate the TARDIS. With the help of Susan and the Hand of Omega the Doctor realizes that he was the Other and remembers much his experiences from the Time of Legend. The Doctor and Larn (aka Susan) meet human beings for the first time on planet Iwa. By this time the Doctor only vaguely remembers hearing about the planet Earth. Upon seeing how similar humans are to Gallifeyans the Doctor decides that Earth might be a good place to hide from the Time Lords. He is given a medical doctor's uniform to wear and assumes the human title Doctor to blend in. A young girl named Jill befriends the Doctor's Granddaughter and names her Susan after her mother, Susan Helright. Larn likes the name so much she insists on being called Susan from this point onwards. After some persuading from Susan her grandfather decides to permanently adopt the human title "The Doctor" as his name. The Doctor discovers the Rose Garden. It appears to be a Rose Garden from 1913 AD Earth but is in reality an exact replica of the Other's Estate outside the Capitol that has been created by the TARDIS. For the rest of his life the Doctor will consider the Rose Garden to be his true home (ie he takes this to be his 'Room'?). After a year of travel, The Doctor takes Susan to Earth during the French Revolution. This is Susan's first visit to Earth (and perhaps the Doctor's as well) and they spend much time there. The Doctor meets Iris Wildthyme. The Doctor is interviewed by Robespierre's agents before escaping using a convenient artillery shell as a distraction. Is is possible that he the witticisms and puns made by the Doctor were actually equations that altered the pattern of events so that the artillery shell was available when he needed it. All Time Lords can see the pattern of in the apparent chaos of the universe a thus can predict the future with great accuracy. This time zone becomes the Doctor's favorite period in Earth history. The Doctor and Susan begin modifying the TARDIS so that his Rassilon Imprimature won’t leave “foot-prints” across the Space-Time Continuum. He replaces much of the Block Transfer material with real matter. These areas can bypass much of the symbiotic relationship circuits that allow a Time Lord direct control through the power of the Rassilon Imprimature. In theory these modifications will allow the Doctor to manually steer the TARDIS. Unfortunately he eventually loses the codes that govern the manual controls. It will take the Doctor and the TARDIS working together to have a system of precise flight control. These modifications also allow non-Time Lords to operate the TARDIS. 'Ship' will develop numerous stealth techniques to evade detection by the Time lords. The Doctor begins deliberately inducing snarls and contradictions into his and Susan's timestreams to make it more difficult for the Time Lords to track them. Susan travels with the Doctor for "years" or "ages." During this time they knowingly violate numerous Time Lord laws. By the time the Doctor has reached the age of 392 it is possible that the Doctor might have dropped Susan off and spent about 49 years traveling before returning to pick her up. This might be to done to introduce more contradictions into their timestreams. If this occurred before the Doctor installed the Manual Symbiotic Bypass in the TARDIS then he could still have fairly precise control over it. Regardless, the Doctor and 'Ship' are 49 years out of sync with Susan by the time Unearthly Child takes place. Some events that may occur in this span are: a visit to the planet Dido (His memory of the Dido People's ceremonial costume will for unknown reasons rank as one of the most horrific and fear inducing images he has ever seen), 26 spent years organizing the books in the TARDIS's library, several visits to planet Ormelia, becoming ruler of Taunton for two weeks (and being very bored by that), obtaining a flask with the Seven Shadows from the time before time, acquiring at least one sonic screwdriver, his hair turns white and he needs glasses to compensate for his farsightedness, the Doctor discovers that Hastur the Unspeakable (Fenric) is living on earth near Constantinople around the year 343 AD (The Doctor offers to stop Fenric if the local king will give him a slave girl named Zeleekha. The Doctor creates a Chess set based on the four dimensional Chess played on Gallifrey and challenges Fenric to a game. After 80 days of playing chess the Doctor traps Fenric in a flask contianing the Seven Shadows from the time before time, because Fenric has weakened to the point that the Doctor can do so. After a few travels the slave girl returns to her own time and gives the flask to the local prince for safe keeping). He then picks Susan back up and resume their travels. The next few years include meeting Cybermen on Mondas, learning to fly spaceships, visiting Venus, and a stop in India before landing in 1963 London... (note Susan looks 14-16 years old but may be as old as 80 because of her time hiding in ancient Gallifrey as Lady Larn). | #11 Apr 20th 2008, 9:13am . Edited Apr 20th 2008, 7:54pm

GM AndyBits about the Doctor: From the same timeline as referenced above The Doctor is a student, and still a ‘minor’ when kicked out of his house and stripped of his name. This happens because he refuses to take up the post of Cardinal. Shortly after his nameday and he’s reached his majority he, along with Rallon and Millennia, steal, with Magnus's help, a Type 18 TTC and find the Toymaker. He is successful in this and his two companions are lost. One is killed the other caught in the Toymaker's realm. The Doctor returns to Gallifrey and is put on Trial. Magnus is the only friend of the Doctor's to attend. For this crime he is kicked out of the Academy, sentenced to 500 years of service in the records area and traffic control, and told that if he can obtain his doctorate in his spare time, then he can reapply. He manages to do this in time to graduate with his class, while carrying out his sentence and working. In spite his bad habits and low test scores he is considered to be at the top of his class. All through school, Koschei, who would later become the Master, consistently attempted to prove himself the best, but Theta Sigma always emerged one step above him. What really burns is that the Doctor expressed indifference to the praise that Koschei desperately wanted. Because of this I believe that the Doctor’s low test scores are purposeful. He fails or nearly fails because he wants to, not because he doesn’t know the material. | #12 Apr 20th 2008, 2:47pm . Edited May 01st 2008, 11:33am

GM AndyOh my... I was just reading http://meshyfish.com/~roo/docwho1.html I came across a list of time lord senses. If anyone knows anything about the Doctor it should be no surprise that no one knows anything about his family. It's stated again and again that he's a mystery. Why would this be so remarkable? ~ One of the senses, apparently the 16th one detailed, states that Time Lords can read each other's biodata, including ancestry. Unless -- the individual being read has lost his or her virginity... And of course... The Doctor's can't be read. Isn't that tantalizing? I wonder who he is supposed to have done the deed with? Can't have been another Time Lord... must have been fairly early on... (before his 4th life, surely) Likely before his trial and forced regeneration. Um, this is cutting down the possibilities a great deal... Anyone care to speculate? |

GM AndyOK we all know about the aspirin allergy, right? But what else might cause problems for Time Lords? Let us list what the chemical is used for, and what properties they have: Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. It's related to salicylic acid which comes from Willow Bark. (Willow extract was the first use of this compound as a pain reliever). Copper aspirinate is another compound used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and as a pigment for PVC. Bismuth subsalicylate is the popular stomach relief aid known commonly as Pepto-Bismol. Methyl salicylate (Wintergreen) is used as a liniment, to soothe joint and muscle pain, in addition to a flavoring agent. It's also known as salicylic acid methyl ester and oil of wintergreen. According to the Wiki: "Plants producing it in significant amounts (readily detected by scent) include: Most species of the family Pyrolaceae, particularly those in the genus Pyrola. Some species of the genus Gaultheria in the family Ericaceae. Some species of the genus Betula in the family Betulaceae, particularly those in the subgenus Betulenta. All species of the family Spiraea, also called the Meadowsweets. Also called oil of wintergreen, it is one of several active ingredients in Listerine mouthwash produced by the Johnson & Johnson company. "Methyl salicylate also has the ability to clear plant or animal tissue samples of color, and as such is useful for microscopy and immunohistochemistry when excess pigments obscure structures or block light in the tissue being examined. This clearing generally only takes a few minutes, but the tissue must first be dehydrated in alcohol. "In pure form, methyl salicylate is toxic, especially when taken internally. A single teaspoon of methyl salicylate contains 7g of salicylate, which is equivalent to more than twenty-three 300mg aspirin tablets." Trolamine salicylate is used as a sunscreen and as an odorless topical analgesic. Sodium salicylate is a useful phosphor in the vacuum ultraviolet with nearly flat quantum efficiency for wavelengths between 10 to 100 nm. Of these all it's the wintergreen that scares me. That it is used as a rootbeer flavoring makes me wonder how safe that ginger beer is... But no, not to worry, ginger beer does not have wintergreen in it. |
