Topic: The Lowdown

Also known as, 'What The Hell Is This?'

Hey guys! Welcome to the Harry Potter Fanfiction Challenges forum. If you have no idea what this is all about, then here's a quick explanation.

Often, when writers are suffering from bouts of writers block or just want some inspiration, they will ask for challenges to write. These normally consist of people giving them some plot points, a few prompts and sometimes some quotes that must be used somewhere in the story. A pairing also needs to be specified if the challengee hasn't already got one. Here's an example:

Challengee: Hi! I'd like a common pairing challenge, preferably non slash and something that can be done in a one-shot. Thank you!

Challenger: Pairing: Ginny/Draco

Plot Points A part of it must be set in a bathroom, someone must reject the other persons kiss at least once, and the pair must strongly disagree about something to do with the Giant Squid.

Quotes: "What the hell is up with your hair?"

"That's a disturbing shade of black...'---'black has shades?"

"PINEAPPLES!"

Prompts: dormitory, sugar, grass, fish, crumble.

(Feel free to try this challenge if you want ;) )

This is the basic idea of giving someone a challenge, but if there's some added funkyness you can think of then go ahead, if you think it's appropriate =]

Please visit this thread to request challenges - we're trying to keep the forum as tidy as possible!

Here is the link to our new Forum C2, The Challenge Archive. Make sure you check it out and review some of the wonderful stories there!

To support our forum, please put this message into your profile:

"I (penname) have challenged myself! I'm proud to be a part of the HPFC forum."

Please try your best to help everyone here by offering challenges and answering questions. Don't be afraid to ask for some challenges yourself too, that's the whole point right? When you do decide to take a challenge, make sure to post the link on that same topic, so we can all read and review your story!

Now go and challenge some people! Feel free to ask me some questions if you need to, my name's Megan and I'm on most, if not every day ^.^

Hi!

I love this idea! I will try to spread the word too!

This sounds like a fun and useful forum!

I can't guarantee that I'll be participating very much as a writer, but I hope to provide some challenges for others occasionally.

Hi! I'm Evenstar606.

I think this forum sounds like my kind of place...I could become at home here, since I tend to get writers' block A LOT and I could 'hone my skills' with challenges before I tackle anything too big.

Okay this thread has been quiet for a month - let's not let this happen again!

Anyone who's out there - As you probably know, I'm Kore and I've been here for the past couple of weeks. This forums grown quite a bit since it's started and there are tons of things to do now! We have several open challenges (actually, I think all the challenges are open...), a game thread, a Celebration thread, and my favorite - the OTT thread.

So come in and re-join the fun!

Hey, guys, just thought I'd remind you of some basics about the forum, not really rules, just...uh, things to stick to. XD

Please, write properly. Capital letters and full stops. Keep chat speak to a minimum. Yeah, everyone's bound to make spelling mistakes or miss a capital once in a while, but if it happens constantly, it's just a hassle to read. Also, try not to overuse question or exclamation marks by putting loads!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, it's just a little annoying :P

Thanks guys! =]

Good idea, Megsy. It's a bit hard to read when writing is done poorly...

Here, here.

My friends always use chatspeak, even in writing asighments, and it drives me crazy! Or up the wall...

Whatever. I hate it. Or, as my Social Studies teacher used to say, I strongly dislike it. (She strongly dislikes the word hate.)

Oh, and for the record, if you need to change the spelling or something in one of your posts, just hit mod then edit. Does loads.

(Infact, I added this with it.) =P

Lol, my cousin (Princess of Frobscottle) and I are building a palace, which you can't enter unless you can make it through the grammar gates. :D I cannot stand chatspeak...

I much prefer proper spelling and grammar, but sometimes you get caught up in it. One I am very bad at putting in is 'lol'

#14 Jun 15th 2008, 8:44am
Kore-of-Myth

I'm becoming victim to emoticians...

But I think what people notice is that I use way too many elipses '...' and dashes.

Ugh, I hate chatspeak, and I can't stand bad spelling and grammar, especially when I see it in fanfiction.

But I love smileys. Smileys aren't chatspeak. They're smileys. 8D

#16 Jun 15th 2008, 11:10am
Cuban Sombrero Gal

I use 'atm,' 'btw,' and 'brb' when I'm busy and don't have much time to type, and I'm known for overusing 'lolz' and smiley faces, but I don't use chatspeak, otherwise. Not even when I text, which makes my friend laugh.

Because I use the dictionary, I sent "I'll be right back, I just need to grab something" quicker than she could say "brb, need to grab sumfin."

#17 Jun 16th 2008, 11:01pm . Edited Jun 16th 2008, 11:02pm

I always refrain from using chatspeak anywhere, yet my friends still continue to do so. -sigh- And I still don't see what's so hard about putting the other two letters on you or using an s and an e and an e instead of c and, if you use "wat" instead of what...why cant you just add the h?!

Okay, I'll shut up now. xD

#18 Jun 17th 2008, 8:05am
toffeecakesxox.

Oooo, chatspeak annoys me to no end! I mean, honestly, I take about 3 minutes to read my friends on the Instant Messenger. It's quite annoying. And then, when my friends use a new er- speak thing, I go, "What?" and they sigh then tell me what is translates to. I only ever use 'omg', 'brb', and 'ttyl'. And that's when I have no time.. so yeah.

Anyways, this forum sounds interesting. Since I don't have the creativeness or the time to type up a HP fanfic and I always have a terrible case of Writer's Block (which usually lasts the longest time! -_-), I'll probably use challenges to help, so this is nice. I'll be coming here more often, I think. ^^

Hey, Strawberry-Swirls! Welcome to HPFC, but don't forget to introduce yourself in the Introductions thread. ^^;

One of my friends recently began using chatspeak in actual conversation! She's like, "OMG! That's so funny! LOL. Blah blah blah....TTFN!" It's horrible. Torture. I can't stand chatspeak...the only thing I do resembling chatspeak is LOL--does that make me a hypocryte?

Welcome, by the way, Strawberry-Swirls!

Hi Strawberry. =]

I always say "OMG" and "like," and I hate it, because I sound like such a hopeless person, and then I'm really mean and complain about everyone else's grammar.

Well, Tigger said "TTFN" instead of the words they represented themselves...xD

I always say "OMG" and "like,

I say like a lot, but that might be one of the staples of living in California.

Another announcement:

Unfortunately, there is a limit to 50 threads per page on these forums. In order to keep the forum as tidy as possible, I'd like to keep it all to one page, so challenges with no or very very few replies may have to be deleted. Sorry for any inconveniences caused.

#26 Jun 18th 2008, 9:33am
Kore-of-Myth

Good idea - *notices it's less full already* I'll try to get my Easter challenge up soon, so that it can be cleared out as well...

#27 Jun 18th 2008, 10:15am
painted.inkblot

But isn't it always possible someone could take a fancy to a challenge with no or very few replies? To make it more neat, you could use one of those categorizers; like, in The Reviews Lounge forum, for example, near the top there're a few different categories which one can click on to go the threads under that category. So you could have categories such as Romance Challenges, Special Occasion Challenges, etc.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

#28 Jun 18th 2008, 3:55pm
mustardgirl1128

*pops up randomly to put her 2 cents in*

I see what you mean--like, having a pull-down menu, with a list of the types of challenges. So the Special Occasions Challenges would be; the Father's Day Challenge, the Easter Challenge, etc. And also, like, Introductions, and Games, and Polls, or whatever Megsy wanted to put as categories...Or something.

#29 Jun 18th 2008, 7:04pm
painted.inkblot

Yeah, so even if there was more than one page of threads, it could be condensed if one used the pull-down menu.

#30 Jun 18th 2008, 7:53pm
Cuban Sombrero Gal

That sounds better, because all the challenges are worthwhile...

Unless you wanted to make it that everyone requests a challenge in the same thread, and then people label their replies with that person's username - to stop clutttering it up that way.

#31 Jun 18th 2008, 10:35pm
Megsy42

Yeah, I know there is always a possibility that people would want to take that challenge, but the ones I'm talking about are the ones that have been sitting in the forum for about a month or more without any takers. Even if we didn't delete them and created catagories to make it easier to surf through them when looking for a challenge, the chances of them being taken after being obviously unpopular for so long are slim. Of course, the challengers are welcome to ask for their challenges to be kept on for a while longer, or if it's too late, to just repost them, but many of the posters have already moved on from the forum.

I do like Cuba's idea about creating a thread for all those requesting a challenge; I'll consider that. =]

#32 Jun 19th 2008, 9:20am
Megsy42

Announcement:

To try and organise the forum a bit more (I know, it seems like I'm obsessed..XD), we're adding in the Catagory function. Unfortunately, this means the the challenges added to the various catagories will need to have their first post edited by me in order to add them. If you have a problem with this...erm..sorry :S But I honestly can't find another way to do it.

Also:

Any new and important announcements will be posted in this thread, in case you haven't already noticed. If you see a new post by me, please stop by and read it - it might concern you! Thank you =]

Announcement:

As you may already know, I'm going to France for a month, leaving tomorrow, meaning that my time on here will be limited, if I manage to get on at all. Kore-of-Myth (you probably know her ;) ) will be taking over as moderator while I'm gone, so if she tells you to do something, do it, unless it's completely unreasonable - which it won't be. Since she'd be left as the only staff of the quickly expanding archive, does anyone want to volunteer to help with the c2 so that she's not burdened with everything? Any extra help will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

I'll miss you guys - make sure you keep this place active while I'm gone, and keep writing your amazing fics! I'll be back soon =]

Oh, and before I forget, if anyone has the urge to mention the awesomely sexy actor DOMINIC MONAGHAN, his name must be written in capslock. (...Don't ask.) This rule is as important as what would seem to be the more serious ones. ;) XD
