DanPhantomCrushTopic: The Ghosts, Their Powers, and The Ghost Zone
Who do you like/dislike? And what about their powers? Speaking of which, is it just me, or are there a few contradictions in the series when it comes to rules in the Ghost Zone? I admit...this is directly relevant to the chapter I'm currently working on. :P |

ErrattaMy favourite ghost is by far the Ghostwriter. He seems like the absolute epitome of a writer, especially fan writers, and as a result, I identify with him. He has a similar sense of humour to my own as well, and probably similar sensibilities. There's also a degree of attraction there. ^^; Also, he has a really sweet keyboard. Other ghosts I like are Clockwork, the Box Ghost, Technus, and Amorpho. Clockwork because he's a serious character, represents serious issues and considerations, and is a refreshing change from "ghost are evil"; Box Ghost because the guy just tries so hard and never seems to get it right; Technus for the same reason as the Box Ghost, but with cooler powers; Amorpho because I tend to like tricksters, because he's a gray character, neither good nor bad, and because he's the best villain new to season three. I don't like Bertrand much, since he doesn't seem to do anything other than be a lackey; same with Fright Knight. The Lunch Lady I also don't like, because I just can't identify with her. Pandora and Vortex are so large of personalities that they end up being flat and boring, and Nocturne is bordering that, though his character manages to be evil and creepy where Vortex … doesn't, so I like him a bit better. The rest of the ghosts I like pretty well or just plain don't care about. The latter are the bit parts, like the Vultures, the Behemoth, and the animal ghosts. Frostbite and Undergrowth also end up in this category because their characterizations feels off. As for powers, I think the coolest (and most powerful) are Time Manipulation and the Quantum Keyboard. Ice powers look cool and are useful, but I find them pretty meh otherwise. Personally, I'd like to have ectokinesis or however you want to call it. Or maybe flight. The rest I think I could take or leave without regrets. I do like the creativity and variation of powers that the writers of the show incorporated. It makes for a richer world and more (fanfic) possibilities, though I know they probably did it more so they could keep coming up with villains to throw at Danny. I can't remember seeing any contradictions about the rules of the Ghost Zone, but I'd be glad to debate with you and/or answer specific questions. I seem to have absorbed a lot of trivia and random details. If you're looking for a way to explain all the ghosts and their powers and make them consistent with each other, I'd suggested taking a look at bluemoonalto's journals on deviantART. She's come up with an excellent theory that works and makes sense, and has it posted in pieces there. Now you have me thinking about how this is related to the next chapter… XD |

DanPhantomCrushHee hee....wow, awesome reply! So much to think about here... You know, I was really disappointed by Vortex. I think he's voiced by Mark Hamil, who, I don't know if you knew, voiced the Joker in the Batman animated series. And did an amazing job. I loooooved his laugh from that. (Kind of reminds me a bit of Freakshow....now I'm curious if he voiced him too, actually....) But yeah, Vortex wasn't quite worthy of being a Mark Hamil villain, in my opinion anyway. So you're crushing a bit on the Ghost Writer, huh? lol....I think your avatar gives that away, actually. Is it just me, or does he look a little like the creator of the show, Butch Hartman? Who, by the way, I think is rather attractive, so I can understand being attracted to the Ghost Writer. :P Sweet keyboard? Hahaha...I need to re-watch this. You know, the Christmas special is one of my offline friend's favorites, she actually set it on repeat up at work one day! lol! Amorpho. Yeah, I'd somewhat forgotten about him. Hum. I need to re-watch that episode. He was one of the better villains for season three though, wasn't he? You're right about many ghosts just not having much personality, not much that sticks in your mind to mull over....but with him there are a few more possibilities. The Box Ghost is so fun. Eep, I probably shouldn't say this, but...bwaha. Er, nevermind. (Bwahahaha.) You're so right about the ice powers. They're great for random, strange things! Like staying cool on a hot day, heh. You know what I love? The ability to heat things, like tea, for instance, lol. And flying. If there was anything I'd really, really love to be able to do, it would be to fly. Ahhh, that would be so wonderful. About the rules of the Ghost Zone...lets just say it's extremely important that I've nailed them down completely before I post this next chapter. In fact, there are many things that have to be set in stone for this update, that, eh...this is a minor spoiler, so I'll put some space... MINOR SPOILER ...that reach into the sequel as well. I have to make a few decisions, and, grrr...that's not my strong point, sometimes. But I need tah post already! Blarg. MINOR SPOILER Alrighty then, that wasn't much of a spoiler, methinks. About the rules, though. I've (obviously) given it a lot of thought, and I think I've pretty much decided how the rules will work in my head. And...you'll probably have figured out what I was thinking of after reading the chapter, but after I've posted perhaps I'll come here and confirm, even post my own "list of rules". And I can mention what I saw as possible discrepancies from episode to episode. (But, just as food for thought, compare, say, Walker's debut, and Beauty Marked.) Thanks for the long post! :D |
|
DanPhantomCrushI'll have to check that deviantart sight you mentioned too....after I post, though, as I want to have things in my head sort of...sorted out on my own, I guess. lol, Though I might go there and see some huge error in my reasoning, perhaps, which would suck...^^ |

ErrattaI don't know if Hamill did Vortex. I know for a fact he did Undergrowth, and am pretty sure he didn't do Freakshow. The Joker thing is new to me though. I associate Hamill with his breakout role as Luke Skywalker. I was disappointed by Vortex too. He could have been such a fun and complex character, but instead he ended up as "I'm bigger and stronger than you and I like causing damage, so ha!" I was disappointed by most of the third season villains, actually, including Vlad and the Box Ghost, who both fell into that rut. I'd have liked to see another Skulker-centric episode, or a Technus one. Heh, yeah, I am crushing and am not ashamed to admit it. ^^ I guess he maybe looks a little like Hartman, but I've never thought of his design like that. Interesting take on it, and if the resemblance was intentional, that makes for some interesting meta…hmm. The keyboard is what Ghostwriter uses to zap Danny into the story and control things. Basically, it has power to change reality that wouldn't quite rival the Reality Gauntlet or Clockwork, but would come close in some ways. You could do a lot of damage, or good, with that thing. Also, it floats and is purple. ;) I agree, flying would be wonderful, but I don't think much could beat summoning objects to me. I'm lazy and practical, lol. Hmm, interesting. I wish you luck coming up with a consistent and workable theory. It's tough, I've tried, but it'll certainly be interesting to see what you come up with. I can understand the desire to do it yourself and then see what others are thinking. That's fair, and bluemoonalto's theory isn't going anywhere. It's been a while since I've seen Beauty Marked, and I can't quite remember how that meshes with Prisoners of Love. Shall have to think on this…. | #5 Jun 15th 2008, 1:18pm . DanPhantomCrushHeehee....I'm so tired right now. I actually wrote out a page of rules last night for the Ghost Zone. More on that later, after I get the chapter posted. :P I also wrote several pages of notes about this chapter (which I think I'll be splitting into two chapters, incidentally) and I'll hopefully be doing the same tonight. Ideas are running around my head. This forum has been amazing so far! It's exactly what I hoped it would be: a jump start forward on my writing! Woot!! The only problem is, I got to bed around 12:30 last night (I think) and just couldn't fall asleep. The place I left off in the chapter, in terms of ironing out specific plot/character points, just wouldn't leave me alone. I remember looking over at the clock to see 4:45 staring back at me. OO I think I got about an hour of real sleep last night! But it's all good, I'll sleep tonight, and hopefully get mostly done with figuring everything out before that. Then I can rework what I've already written, incorporate the changes I've made, and get out a chapter! :D Thank you again for taking the time to post here, by the way! It's helped me tremendously! Just talking about the characters with you...wow. :P Yay. I'm curious about Mark Hamill (oops, I was spelling it wrong!). I think I'll bop over to wikipedia or something... Hahaha!! I love Mark Hamill. Here's a quick list of people he's voiced: Fire Lord Ozai from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Joker from Batman: The Animated Series, Colonel Muska from Castle in the Sky (by Miyazaki), and a thousand plus more things. Check him out on imdb, if you're curious. And you're right, I totally switched Undergrowth and Vortex! It looks like the only person he's voiced from Danny Phantom is Undergrowth, though I didn't look thoroughly. Hum, the Ghost Writer is pretty powerful. So long as things don't need to rhyme, I could maybe write him, but the rhyming thing....eeek. Poetry does not come easily to me...or pretty much come to me at all. :D Thanks for the scoop on the keyboard. I have yet to re-watch it...unsurprisingly, since it's only been a day or something. :P |

Errattalol I know the feeling. I haven't done the late night, little sleep thing for little over a year, and longer when it comes to fic instead of essays, but I know how it is. I keep working and reworking scenes as I'm falling asleep. Glad the forum's working for you! XD And glad I've been able to help with things, too. It's been a while since I've really done any DP discussion, and now I'm doing it here, and with someone I ran into on another site as well. I'd forgotten how fun this is! Hmm, Hamill's voiced a lot of stuff, hasn't he? I can't really comment on more than that. Undergrowth and Skywalker are the only characters of his I'm familiar with. I think he's probably better at voicing than live acting, though, just based on the comparison of the two characters. For DP characters, Undergrowth's his only one. There was a lot of excited talk around the release of "Urban Jungle" to that effect. Heh, y'know, Ghostwriter's been the major topic of discussion with that other person I mentioned, so I'm on my game here! He doesn't need to rhyme everything. He talks in prose before and after the poem, and I'm sure he's capable to writing things that don't rhyme. It would be pretty weird otherwise, wouldn't it? If you wanted to write a story or cameo for him, you wouldn't even need to include what he's currently working on. There's a lot more that can be done with the character. And you're welcome for the scoop on the Keyboard. :) |

DanPhantomCrushHeyoh. :) Sorry for the long delay...and, on that note, I sent a copy of the PM I sent you to myself. It was freaking cut off! Dag nab it!! I opened it up earlier tonight thinking it was a PM from someone else...haha, as opposed to a PM from myself, lol. Anyway, the PM I wrote you was quite long, too. Originally, anyway. Yarg. In short, I said I looked forward to reading your book in stores, since the premise was exceedingly interesting to me (which might not come as a surprise, I suppose). I don't want to say too much more here. Um, and I talked about writing in general, and how most people don't get as far as a rough draft, it seems like, so you're already ahead of the game. And I don't remember what else I said! It was all amazingly cool, I'm sure. :P So yeah, Hamil's so fun. He's kind of a ham, you should check out a few of the the Batman episodes (animated series from the late nineties Batman, though, not later on). He obviously loved playing the Joker. About Ghostwriter...he's cool, but I should confess that I'm a very one track person, in a way, and so a fic with him in it would be a long time coming at this point. As a main character, for certain. The sequel to Catalyst...maybe he could have a cameo...hum. There are still things up in the air for that. :D Now I'm curious who else you've been talking to... |
|
ErrattaHey, no prob. I randomly disappear from places too. :) I thought the PM might've been cut off. Too bad. That was a lot of writing for you. :( I'm glad you think my novel sounds interesting though. I was really inspired with the idea and just kind of ran with it. 300 pages in under six months. *glee* I used a lot of ideas and themes from my fics, so that definitely helped with the writing. I'd love to hear what else you have to say about my book and about writing in general, but will completely understand if you don't want to redo the PM—and I can resend mine if you'd like. I remember that Batman very vaguely. I don't think I remember the Joker though. :( That's fair. I wasn't suggesting you write a fic with him. I was just using that to expand a bit on the previous statement. ^^6 It would be absolutely awesome if you put him in, but that's more a fannish opinion than a well-thought-out, writer's one. Caretaker-of-Myth, on deviantART. A very recent convert to the legions of Ghostwriter fans. (My fault, actually. XD) |

DanPhantomCrushPop! I've magically reappeared, though...probably only to randomly disappear again, I admit. :P Gar. I'm completely forgetting what I put in that thing now. I'm sorry! It was a very stream of consciousness type of thing. I wish I'd saved it! (I sometimes do, when they're long, just in case the internet fritzes while I'm sending it or something.) 300 hundred pages is pretty awesome, especially in six months. Honestly, I can completely understand how writing could be a full time job. Though...admittedly a very cool job, since you get to work from home, take breaks when you choose, heck, you get to completely set your own schedule, I imagine. (This would be one reason why I want to make a successful career of composing, lol.) But still...it's a lot of hard work, which I'm sure a lot of people don't realize. Good luck with editing!! Hmm...darn, my brain's not working too well right now. Sometime I'll be in that "write tons about something to do with writing that interests you" mode, and I'll give you lots of stuff to think about. Probably. Maybe. :P Speaking of Batman...lol. I'm not seeing the new one. I'm a wuss, and it looks very creepy! I'll stick to shows like Kung Fu Panda. :D About Ghostwriter, like I said (I think I said this, anyway..) there's a lot of space in the next story, a lot to decide. There's probably room to fit him in. Though you're right: if his character didn't work somehow, wasn't useful, etc. I wouldn't use him. But he could be, I'll figure it out when I get there, lol. Caretaker-of-Myth has a nifty name. | #10 Jul 18th 2008, 9:26pm

ErrattaThat is entirely understandable. A bit of a pity, but completely understandable. I have the exact same kinds of memory issues, and will copy long responses for short-term storage fairly often. Yeah, it is. I'm now at the stage where I'm having people read it over and give critique—which means all the initial editing is done, woot! Critique so far has come from Dad and has been pretty good. Some verbal ticks, like overuse of "-ing", but he likes the world and the characters and the ideas and says most manuscripts get a lot more red ink than mine, so I'm thinking it's overall postive. XD I'd like to eventually make writing a full-time job, because that would be seriously awesome for the same reasons you gave for composing. Realistically, I know that's unlikely to happen, but I'm a good if currently untrained editor and I have a stable job at a bookstore, so I don't think I'm going to be strapped for cash. I'm still debating. I've heard "good" and "mediocre" about it. I'm not a Batman person, didn't see Batman Begins, and frankly would only be going to see Heath Ledger which I'm not sure is a good use of $12 plus refreshments. I'm waiting for my sister to go because she'll give the most relevant review. | #11 Jul 19th 2008, 12:35am

DanPhantomCrushCool, I'm glad things are going smoothly! It seems to me that really honing something as complicated and large as a novel would include an outside view- aka, an editor or two. I'm glad your money stituation is looking good too. That's got to just feel...niiiice. Man, I wish my money situation was solid. It's soooo not. Someday perhaps I'll give details. Once it's solid. :P I'm probably going to read the super detailed spoiler, which will probably confirm that this movie is too gruesome for me. And that'll be the end of that. But I hope your sister likes it - it sucks when you sit through two hours of something and wish you could get that time back- and banish the headache it gave you too, lol. | #12 Jul 20th 2008, 8:42pm
