monstermoofieTopic: Cafe - general chatter
So we're all upset here but I thought I'd make a thread where we could talk about anything. |
|
epalladinoHi, Yes we're upset about FanLib. But fandoms and fanfic writing came before FanLib and will continue on after. Thanks for setting up this forum. Beth Palladino |

MaryileeI hope people enjoy it here and it will at least buy some time while options are sorted out. What I want is something just like Fanlib. lol. I want comments shown that authors have given as well as received. I found lots of great fics by watching the reviews that friends had recently left for others. I wish I could make a site that had all the good stuff of Fanlib. :::sigh::: I know the stories are the important thing, but on fanlib, people were so much more willing to read outside their fandoms. Not sure why that doesn't happen here. I was thinking of pinning a topic with comments given/received where people could post comments. |
|
live2tivoYou're absolutely right. I did find myself reading outside of my fandoms more often on FanLib. I even discovered a couple of fandoms through the Fandom 411 (Namely Wonderfalls) I'm really going to miss that. I like your idea for a thread where we can rec fanfics and post our reviews. Maybe there should even be a Fandom 411 thread. I was writing one for No Hiatus earlier about Rent. Plus, it wouldn't be as formal, and you wouldn't have to wait to post. |
|
MaryileeHas anyone else gone to myfandoms and posted a story? I can't seem to add chapters. I have the first chapter, but the way it says to add chapters isn't working. So frustrating. |
|
love.letterI think I posted a story on MyFandoms. *checks* Yes, yes I did. Both of the stories that I needed to keep are on there. |
|
monstermoofieBeen over there but haven't tried to put up any stories yet. |
|
Flash ForewardI'm plannin on just sticking with FFN, Teaspoon, and my LJ |
|
TikatuI went to myFandoms and it took seven or eight tries just to get an avatar picture up! I'll admit, too, that I'm a bit biased against them. After seeing all the threads and replies made by "jdrogue" throughout the FanLib forums, I realized that she was the same person who spammed a lot of the writers at Lunaescence.com with a thinly-veiled ad for myFandoms and for the corresponding software, FanFicFan. The owners at Lunaescence ended up going to her ISP to complain. So, I'm kinda leery about them now. I think I'll stick with this site for now. I archive at a lot of places, but this is the one that's consistently up and usable. | #10 Jul 25th 2008, 2:28pm

monstermoofieI don't like how you can't print out a whole story in one page on my fandom (well the reason it matters to me is I like to save them online in one whole page not a zillion little ones). Not too sure I'll do much there, we'll see. | #11 Jul 25th 2008, 2:49pm

I found that I couldn't see my avi for the first day, but others could. Today, my background finally appears to me as the correct one, but I think others saw it yesterday. Anyway, I now I know why that name seems so familiar! I think that's even where I first saw myfandoms the first time. Hmmm...food for thought. I know that I'm not really happy with all the anti-Fanlib stuff posted there. One right on the front page. Right now though, I'll give them a shot. Ringmaster seems decent enough. And they are both FNL fans. lol. | #12 Jul 25th 2008, 3:00pm

TikatuI didn't like that anti-FanLib thing either. As for my avatar, I tried one pic several times and didn't see it, even though I left for hours. When I uploaded my second choice, it only took a few minutes for it to be visible. | #13 Jul 25th 2008, 3:08pm

MaryileeBeth left me a comment on a story at myfandoms, and I only found it by chance. It seems there's no notification of that. And the comments don't show up on your profile page. I may not upload any more until I see what happens with what I have already. One, for some reason, has 12 hits in about two hours. Only Beth left a comment, but what really puzzles me is how so many people found it. | #14 Jul 25th 2008, 4:02pm

epalladinomaryilee--Go to myfandom.com and click on the link to 'my account'. I think you might be able to see my comment there. See if it doen't show up under the message center. I'm curious. Beth | #15 Jul 25th 2008, 5:48pm

spacecadet777I'm upset about this too. I just saw the message this morning. I wanted to cry. Fanlib is where I started reading fanfiction and got inspired to start writing my own story...not finished yet, but I am working on it. | #18 Jul 26th 2008, 7:49am

MrBillyDWelcome to fanfiction .net spacecadet777: This is a much larger website, with more than 1 hundred thousand members. Whatever you post will receive a tremendously greater number of reads and reviews, than you could have possibly had on fanlib. I posted 23 stories on fanlib. They received 495 views, and 67 feedbacks. Some stories received less than a half dozen reads, and some of my best, received no reviews. Here on fanfiction .net, the same stories have received well more than 10 thousand hits, and over 100 reviews. So I think you'll find that being here is much more satisfying. | #19 Jul 26th 2008, 8:12am

spacecadet777I agree. But when you find a site that you are comfortable with, it still upsets you when they have to shut it down... | #20 Jul 26th 2008, 8:14am

MaryileeThis is a much larger website, with more than 1 hundred thousand members. Whatever you post will receive a tremendously greater number of reads and reviews, than you could have possibly had on fanlib. That's probably true in larger fandoms, but some of us who wrote in smaller fandoms became very active reading outside our own fandoms and, as a result, received quite a few comments in return. I can't speak for others, but I know that I have a lot more comments on some of my storeis on Fanlib than here. My story, Enemy Combatant, had a lot more hits/comments on Fanlib than I do here on ffn. I only recently began updating it here because there were so few readers. It's a small fandom and not very active with really no way to promote it here. Friday Night Lights is moderately active, but I went almost a year with no comments on a story here despite getting lots of hits all the way through to the last chapter. For whatever reason, people in the fandom didn't leave comments. As a result, I stopped posting my FNL fanfic over here. I may have to start again now though. | #21 Jul 26th 2008, 8:45am

epalladinoLeila Data said: I can't really find reviews on myfandoms either - there's no easy way to find them, from what I can tell. You might have to open each story individually, scroll down to the bottom, and see if there's any comments there. Beth | #22 Jul 26th 2008, 10:45am

epalladinoIn comparing FanLib to FFN. I also post in a relatively small fandom, but, in general, still receive more comments on FFN than on FanLib. What increased my comments on FanLib was the contests and review exchanges we started there. If we start the same thing through this forum on FFN, we could start to encourage the same reading outside of your fandom and giving reviews to get reviews that we started to have on FanLib. Dealing with myfandoms.com. It isn't easy to find your comments, although I'm not sure I've gotten any yet. I don't like the story display. When you have a chapter or story that has many pages, the reader has to wade past your disclaimer, author's notes, and summary every time they turn a page. That seems awkward to me. I think I like the story display on FFN better. Sure it doesn't have the glitzy looking display of FanLib and you can't add pics to your story, but it's still easier to navigate pages and chapters on FFN than on myfandoms.com In the long run, I think we could really use this forum to make our presence on FFN work almost as well as the forums did on FanLib. monstermoofieOne marvelous thing I found for ff.net is a download tool that will put ff.net stories onto 1 page and save it as .doc or .htm(l? can't remember which) and I think .pdf. It can combine a multi chapter story into 1 page, much like the fanlib print button did. I'll have to see if I can find where I found the thing at. :D | #24 Jul 26th 2008, 12:05pm

epalladinoJust to say that I'll be incognito for a week. I'm off to the Berkshire Choral Festival starting tomorrow and won't be back until the following Sunday. Who knew this would end up being FanLib's last week. I've been signed up for this coming week since last summer, when FanLib was still young and fresh. So, if you don't here from me that's what's going on. I'll be back. Beth | #29 Jul 26th 2008, 6:08pm

epalladinoI'm sure I'll have fun at the festival. I haven't posted much to myfandoms.com yet, but I will. P.S. On myfandoms.com. Go to 'My account' and the to the tab labled 'settings'. Once you get there, you'll see the top choice is account settings. You can click off all sorts of things for email notifications--the first one is for comments. If this is for comments on fan fictions, you might then get notification of comments being left on your stories. Although, I'm not sure about that. I've got it clicked off, but as it's possible that I haven't received any comments yet, it's hard to tell what kind of 'comments' these notifications are for. Yet, if it's for story comments--that's great. One of you guys should check that out. Make sure you have that choice clicked and then have someone post a comment on one of your fics and see if you get an email notification. Beth | #32 Jul 26th 2008, 8:50pm

epalladinoHi, to all my forumer FanLib friends on FFN. I would like to thank all of you you've designated me a favorite author. If I haven't reciprocated, it's more that I'm trying like crazy to get packed, etc. for the trip tomorrow. I just didn't want people to think that I don't appreciate the gesture. P.S. I can't believe how many FanLib members have been adding stories on myfandoms.com. Like maryilee I've hardly had time to look at any of them. But I've saved all of the email notifications to a YahooMail folder and hope, little by little to read many of these stories. Beth | #33 Jul 26th 2008, 10:43pm

TikatuFolks on the Introductions thread are talking about the weather, so I thought I'd bring the topic over here. Maryilee, you were mentioning desert heat? I wish! I live in South Carolina, and at 1 a.m. this morning it was still in the 80s and near 100% humidity. Walking outside was like walking into a slightly cool sauna. By 1 p.m., it was back up into the 90s - I don't dare look at the temperature right now! | #37 Jul 30th 2008, 1:36pm

Samdum the Bouncing HobbitYes, Doctor Who and Torchwood. David Tennant's my favorite Doctor, followed closely by Tom Baker. But...no one can outdo David. =) And yourself? I also see that you've seen the Dark Knight...lucky. =P | #43 Jul 31st 2008, 10:50am

Samdum the Bouncing HobbitJoker is definitely my favorite comic book villian, which kinda makes me worry for my own sanity since Joker is kinda...ya know...psychotic. Lucius is a good villian, though. =) Favorite bad guy ever, though, just coz George Saunders played him: Uncle Neddy from The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. He's so deliciously smarmy! XD Oh, wait a minute, though...*thinks* Okay, Uncle Neddy is tied with Sweeney Todd. No, not because he's Johnny Depp: I loved Sweeney Todd when it was George Hearn and Angela Lansbury on a stage. I need to see the Dark Knight but, unfortunately, I'm currently broke. *emo tear* I suppose I'll have to settle for when it comes out on DVD. *sad panda* | #45 Jul 31st 2008, 10:58am

myinterestsI'm having a hard time understanding My Fandoms myself. They look to have a lot of goods, but I found out I got a review (finally) and I could not even figure out the story it was on! Plus, there seems to be no stats on the site like who favored your story and such. myinterestsI have such a hard time at MyFandoms so I like it much better here, plus people actually LOOK at my stories here and review them, lol! I spend so much time actually looking for people and then trying to befriend them... it's not easy for me when I have to tear apart the site to get a simple link. Maybe I'm missing something. I've been here for a long time so I actually feel at home here, and at fanlib. It's sad fanlib is gone. :( I am looking into new places to call home, like http://fandom.myinterests.com, I'm looking into http://www.inuyasha-fiction.com/...
