Weird...

I was just starting to warm up to the idea of Fanlib. Today I go over to my profile (finally deciding to post some stories) only to find that they're shutting it down. I feel like I've just been punked. :(

Welcome White-Eyebrow. :-) I know you from the WA forum, I believe. It's too bad you weren't able to participate on Fanlib. It was really great. Not perfect, by any means, but it had a great sense of community as you can see just by viewing marphlets farewell video. What was wonderful is that all those people in the video (plus a lot more besides) are all from different fandoms and yet we all knew and read each other's stories. That was what made it so special to me. It wasn't just a place to park a fanfic.

Well, they left it go until a few minutes after 5:00pm PST and then FanLib went bye-bye just after I had posted a few last things to the forums.

Sob.

Glad so many people came here.

Beth

(Edit: It came back briefly around 8:15 EST, just enough time for me to read something important and then it was bye-bye again.)

I was THERE on Fanlib until the very last post on the PARTY forum. *sigh* It almost felt like it wouldn't end. It even went a bit past the hour, but alas, the site went down. So, like a good writer, I set to work on an obit for Fanlib. You can read it here: August 5, 2008 Fanlib Dies; Creativity Lives On http://kvpalumproject.wordpress.com/

Ok, I guess the urls and coding didn't work. Hmm. Although I've been on this site for almost two years, I am a total newbie here. And my avatar is from the (also) former Tobias Mehler fan forum site. I made it special for our poetry discussion we had going there. I guess it fits now that fanlib is gone. I'm taking a road less taken ... Glad to see some familiar faces on that path though. ^_^

I've been refreshing all day, waiting for the official notice. I was so sad to finally see it. No more Fanlib.

I'm wearing one of my Fanlib tees in mourning.

Thanks Maryilee,

Anyone know anything about Disney purchasing Fanlib, or is that just a rumor? It would be a shame to let all that code go to waste. :p

Disney buying FanLib...

In my opinion, this was just a rumor. How and why it was started is now a moot point.

I'm missing FanLib already, but I'm glad that so many of us stayed together.

Just to let y'all know, I'm on vacation this next week and I've unsubscribed for the moment. I'll resubscribe when I return.

Sorta quiet here recently. I hope that means everyone is writing wonderful stories.

I just got home after a 14 hour drive home from North Carolina. We went down on Wednesday, so I am so sick of riding in a car! My husband's mother passed away Sunday and we went for the service. I did get some net access at his aunt's home and when family overwhelmed me, I stole away to check email and a few posts here and there. Not too much time to surf.

Maryilee,

Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. My mother-in-law, despite knee problems that confine her to a walker is still going strong at 91 and still live alone.

I knew you were away, but I guess most other people are busy too and I know that some have been busy on myfandoms.com

I'm really surprised at times at how fast some former FanLib members are submitting things to myfandoms. Maybe it's my internet dialup connection, but I find their website really slow. There's no way I could submit stories that fast. I'm also having trouble seeing people artworks. I know I won't be able to see them at work because most people host these pics from photobucket which is a blocked website at work. But I should be able to see them at home. I can see the pics in the galleries, but when I clicked to see the full-sized pic I see the artist's notes and the box to leave comments. I don't even see a space where the artwork is suppoed to be. I've reported this, but haven't heard anything yet. Some others are having similar problems, but not everyone. It may be a browser problem.

Hope you have a nice day tomorrow to rest up from the trip. I'm planning in reading Enemy Combatant this weekend.

Dh's mother had been fighting cancer for nine years or so. We knew it was getting close, but it still comes as a bit of a surprise.

I haven't had any trouble submitting fics at myfandoms. I don't repeat the summary/notes everytime, just put something simple in to satisfy the automated thingy. I can paste a chapter from here to there in under a minute now. Oh, and jo figured out the image thing. I couldn't see it either, but if you click on the gallery pic then, even though you won't see the pic, click on the 'rate this art' thing. When you click, the picture show up! LOL. I sometimes feel like that site is testing us, like giving a dog a bone with a treat buried in the middle. We have really work at it.

I'm not into Myfandoms either, Beth. Not really into ff.net either. I have one story at the former and 0 at the latter. So far I really like the look of Misskitten's new site. Hopefully most people will like it. :)

I started with FFN really (outside of some little things on LJ) and until FanLib FFN was where I posted all my stuff. I'm starting to get used to myfandoms. At least the support there is a bit more hands on than FFN. I really like the looks of misskitten's site, but am afraid that if it takes too long to become usable former FanLibbers will have lost interest.

I don't think it will be too much longer, Beth. :)

I'm glad. I really think that it would be great for us to have our own site--one that we can make work for us. It's interesting to note who likes or dislikes other fanfiction sites. For some reason, FanLib made a lot of us happy and I'm glad were trying to keep the spirit alive.

I was in a real writer's block with my one WIP. Getting involved in the 'write for an hour' challenge really made a difference. I'll never be a prolific author, but three separate hours of steady effort and I had a chapter completed that I've been procrastinating for months on. I haven't gotten a lot of reviews on that chapter yet, but the ones I got were really satisfying. Also, I've had some new readers on FFN who've been reading that WIP from the beginning chapters and I'm pleasantly surprised that this four-year in the making story is still making people happy. That was one reason why I felt so bad for the writer's block--I didn't want people to think that I wasn't planning on completing the story.

FanLib may not have lasted as a website, but the difference that it made in my life will certainly be ongoing. I'm looking forward to misskitten's new site and hope that it won't be blocked at work.

Tikatu, I hope you have/had a great vacation.

I certainly did, Beth! A wonderful family reunion with all my hubby's family, and a chance to meet a fellow Thunderbirds author, AmandaTracy! Long trip, though, as we drove straight through from SC to MI.

Resubscribing now.

Hey, can someone give me the link to the Fanlib refugee site. I lost it when I switched computers. That'd be greatly appreciated.

Certainly! We're moving to the new FanNation board soon but it will be posted on the other board first. :D

I really don't understand all that much about working on the internet, but I've just checked on Google. "FanNation" is a Sports Website. Could you please be clear about what's going on?

Our FanNation is not quite ready to open yet, but we're getting close. You won't find it on a google search at this point. It is part of MissKitten's domain so its URL will actually be FanNation.com/her website url.com. I don't know the date we are opening yet so I can't tell you yet.

Meanwhile, the site we are using is the Invision one which I posted above. :)
