Topic: Writing: Challenges and Contests

Obviously, if we do end up running contests and the like out of this forum, they'll be separate topics for each contest, but I figured we need a singular thread to bounce ideas and such off of each other for various contests or even for plot bunnies.

Right now, I'm working on a ficathalon that I made up for myself, modeled after the 50 prompts communities on LiveJournal. I call it the Fifty Film Ficathalon. I've made a list of 50 movies, and I'm writing 50 fics in a variety of fandoms in which the characters watch/discuss the movies. It's really fun, and, since I'm running it myself, I don't have to confine all of the fics to one fandom, and there's no one making me write all 50 stories. If you're stuck on ideas, I highly suggest making a movie list and seeing what you can come up with. It's really quite fun. I mean, how else am I supposed to think of a Psych fanfic involving Spartacus.

I'm going to pin this topic to the top so it can always be found.

Cool. I've never had a sticky thread before.

Although, I should try to stay on subject, so I might as well mention the other ficathalon I made up for myself: I've made a list of fifty TV shows and I'm planning (or attempting) to write 50 fanfics in which characters from another fandom are watching the shows. I'm calling it "50 Shows for 50 Ships" I will probably end up writing some gen fics for some of the shows, but I'm really hoping this will help me write fics from different fandoms than I've written in before.

Let's just say there will be an Angel: The Series fic involving Rugrats coming your way soon.

One thing I didn't like about the contests on fanlib, was that once a story was entered into a contest, it could not be entered into any others, unless it was a duplicate. My list of stories was littered with duplicates. Here on fanfiction .net, that won't be a problem.

I also didn't like the way that once a story was entered, it couldn't be deleted. I mistakenly entered the wrong stories twice, and was unable to correct that. Here that shouldn't be a problem either.

I would love to be able to continue the 'contest' or 'challenge' idea here. I still have the one contest idea that I kept waiting to have the time to do on FanLib...

It would be interesting to see how this forum would set up and run a contest.

I'm sorry that I'm going go away starting tomorrow for a whole week. In a way, this ended up not being a great week to go away, but who knew that it would be FanLib's last.

Personally, I like the idea of challenges better than contests. The idea behind them is virtually the same, and without the software to run a contest like on fanlib, this would just encourage us to write fun things that we wouldn't think of before.

If you need "incentives" - we can always give an honorary title (Ms. Every Night Lights, or Queen of Hell) for the month for those who got their entry in by a certain date.

Thoughts?

I like the idea of challenges better than contests. But then maybe the challenge initiator could get to pick which stories he/she thinks best fits the challenge. Sort of like the choosing of finalists, but without the drumming for votes.

Beth (who isn't sure she want's to be called Queen of Hell, as Hellboy who should supposedly be a Prince of Hell has rejected his title)

I'm kind of iffy on whether or not I like challenges better than contests, because they're kinda the same thing for me...they both involved writing entries, submitting them, getting comments and giving comments, and possibly winning, so...idk.

On another note (but only because I don't know where else to say this)--Congrats for winning the 'Everybody Dreams' contest, Modern! :D *dances*

I'm cross-posting this here.... it will be run off the board Misskitten has made.

I'd like to get our World Idol contest going again.

(Open only to Jo, Beth, Kogasgirl, Cheile, Katesfire and Ivy)

I'd welcome input on the 'how to' parts but for now here are my thoughts. If all of you who already submitted could get your story up somewhere, then post the link here. When we have all of them I'll get them in one post for everyone's convenience. Once the submission time is done we'll tell you which of your stories made the cut (each of the 6 will have 1 as a finalist unless someone elects not to participate so it's a matter of us chosing between 2 stories each person can submit).

Then, once you know the finalists we'll give you some time to review and then I'll open voting--to be PMd to me. I will acknowledge your PM so make sure you get a reply.

I thought of a poll but I decided not to make a habit of that--I'm not worried about all of you in WI but (to my knowledge) we can't tell who votes what in a poll and I am concerned to monitor against self-votes--again, not among the 6 of you--I already know you wouldn't.

Now here's what I want to know what you think.... I'm considering (remember, we're going with top 4) allowing each voter to vote for their top 3 favorite writers. Feedback?

Although I am not opposed to this, I will be swamped for some time. Beth is on vacation. Can we wait a little, since it's sort of difficult right now, with some of us trying to salvage what we can of our archives?

No probs, just felt a little forgotten there...but I'm over it. ^_^

Anyways...I'm not opposed to this idea, either. I'm just a little curious to know if Kogasgirl or Katesfire are here at all, because my searches for their usernames and stories didn't come up with anything. Are they on a different site, or have they fallen out of touch?

Kogasgirl is over on myfandoms.com as kogasgirl76

I can't remember if she is here.

She's supposed to be here on ff.net under the same name, but this stupid search thing isn't coming up with any links to her page. D: I have no idea where Katesfire is, either...

Kogas just started posting on Invision, I'll make sure she sees the post.

Cheile and KF I've told. :)

This whole people with different user names is getting confusing. There was confusion on LJ with me having a different ID. Oh, well. After a while, everyone will get used to the new ones.

As for challenges vs. contest, I do prefer challenges. With challenges, authors have to write something new and there's no competition except for the individual to get a story written.

I agree, but unfortunately people take usernames that others have used elsewhere. This happens all the time. I bet there are 1001 "InuyashaLovers" out there...

I was shocked to see that someone already registered JoPierce AND Jo_Pierce on myfandoms.com (Then again, maybe it was me, years ago, and maybe I forgot my passwords? Hmmmmm?)

Hi, I'm back from vacation and up to wanting to run the World Idol contest again. One problem, though. You may have a problem on FFN with excerpts designed for contests as FFN does not allow for multiple instances of the same text.

I'm in touch with kogasgirl. Been doing some IM with her last week and she is on myfandoms as well.

Cool! Now that nobody's been left behind...I'm probably going to put my two contest duplicates on my LJ and on my Myfandoms account (and maybe also on the LJ Fanlib Forever page, if it's ok with Tikatu).

Also, can't we specifiy what portions of established works are being entered? For example - chapter 3 of "How I Wrote this Fanfic" with a direct link to the chapter?

The only problem is if we want to edit the piece for the contest, I guess.

I'm thinking that myfandoms.com might not object to submissions posted that are excerpts from longer stories. I know that FFN would not allow for that.

I'm also thinking that you could then post the url of that excerpt in this forum. Even if it can't be a clickable link, people can copy and paste the link into their browser. I know that on FFN you can't just have a link in lieu of a submission, but it could be more flexible what is posted on the forums in terms of links to texts for challenges.

I know everything's still very hectic, after the move from fanlib to here, and many things aren't completely back to normal; but have any contests been started yet, or is everyone still just talking about them?

Testing the link theory...

Edit: I tried to make it into a link, thought maybe it was something I might be able to do. It looks like a link in the edit, but when I submit, it loses it's blue color. Sorry!--Maryilee

Quote from the FFN forums submission window:

Notes: To prevent spam, you may only create clickable links pointing to fanfiction.net, fictionpress.com, and youtube.com. Old forum code such as [tag][/tag] will no longer work in new posts.

That's why you have to copy and past the link into a browser line.

Beth

Edit: copying and pasting your link got me to that web page...
