I read it! :-D

"Frail" is good. Reading's OC's are the only ones I have truly, truly liked. They actually add to the story instead of detracting from it. I loved the other one, what was it..."Strangers and Angels", I think.

Yes, I sometimes read from a recommendation list. Most of the time, however, I've already read what is being recommended...but there are some exceptions. I just found "In Reverse" the other day. I'm in agony waiting for her, Marinov and Thru Terry's Eyes to update. I've gotten behind on my own story because I can't stop reading theirs, lol.

Have no idea. Posting is so sparatic by most, with the exception of about 5 or so of us who seem to respond or comment on just about everything.

I'll have to check out the fics that you mentioned. They sound very interesting. Think that I read Mariner a while ago.

Gotta make time to get over and read "Frail," have it on alert. Still have to finish her "Strangers and Angels."

Rec's are how I get tuned into new authors. I don't really like shifting through all the fics to find the good one's...not a lot of time for that. Though I do sometimes do it.

Hey if it's cool think that I'll start a rec topic when I get home from work tonight...or in a few minutes since I have a bit of time to kill.

Yeah this forum is kinda...wacky. I think a lot of it has to do with the formating of forums on ff.net. I wish I could do more with it. But oh well. Until I find a way to somehow host a forum on a website of my own, this is the best we're gonna get, hehe. Well, except for LJ of course, but there's not really forums over there...

And now I'm rambling...

I think it takes true skill to create OC's that don't take away from the main characters. When Sam and Dean come into contact with Reading's OC's it starts a journey for the boys...and remains *their* journey throughout...doesn't turn into something else, doesn't start to be more about Jo and her kids more than it is about Sam and Dean. I like that. There have been some other authors with oc's I also haven't minded. I think there is one in "Forseen" that I always thought fit really well, didn't detract from the story at all. Wish I could think of more right now. In Reverse also has several that I don't mind, and even like but again, the characters seem to add to Dean and Sam's story rather than taking it for themselves. And again, with In Reverse and Strangers and Angles there's that outsider's view of the brothers that I kind of like to read, picturing how someone normal out there might picture them. And then there's the other OC in In Reverse, the one I love to hate...I love tension.

As for recs. I love recs. Having taken on "The Dean's List" with the arogancy of proclaiming I can recommend the truely good stuff out there all on my lonesome I love getting stuff recommended to me. Helps me through some of the sifting that can get so difficult.

And I'm actually suprised this forum doesn't get more participation. Although I have noticed it gets more participation than almost all of the others, and that's something.

Bwahaha. Oh Foreseen. :-D

Yeah, I'm actually VERY proud of how well this forum is doing. I wasn't expecting that when I created it, but I'm glad. I like reading all of your discussions, hehehehe.

Oh, and I would also like to say that I totally agree with "Strangers and Angels." But then again, I love any story that has kids in them, lol. I can't resist.

JustGray
But not with In Reverse? ;) lol. Just kidding. I agree about fics with kids in them. More particularly if the kids are believeable in their actions and words and don't just say mommy and daddy a lot.

Oh and "No Traveler Returns" by Jenn-something has a small slew of OC's I also enjoyed. (no kids that I recall...sorry P.L.) And I'd recommend this story if you all haven't read it yet. It's angsty Dean, if that agrees with you.

Oh I like In Reverse. :-) But I must admit that I like the flashbacks better than I like the rest of the story. I'm not sure why. Maybe because I just like the idea of Dean being trapped in his own body not being able to do anything, you know?

And Jenn is my hero.

Okay, ya'll, I got all of my recommendations posted on the new rec thread started by Little Wing. I just took them straight from my favorite stories list. There should be more, but sometimes late at night I forget to add them, so...that is all I have for now.

Okay, so I'm slow... and yes, pretty confused. What's an OFC and what's a Mary Sue?
#161 Aug 01st 2006, 7:54am
LittleWing
OFC= Original Female Character

An OFC can be like a guest star, if you will, to the story. Kinda like the way that Meg or Sarah was on the show.

A Mary Sue= the author purposely writing her/himself into the lives of Dean and Sam.

An example would be you have a crush on Sam or Dean so you write yourself into the story in a romantic way. Ways to spot a Mary Sue are: she is usually the best, even better than the boys, at everything. She's smartter than everyone else. Usually has some kind of power and is loved by everyone is the story. Not all Mary Sues are bad, most are just annoying. But some are just terrible.

Did that help?

Thanks LittleWing. For a second there I was actually kinda scared that I had been writing a Mary Sue... thank goodness it's just a OFC.

ok im kinda jumping in a little bit here but thanks little wing for your explanation on mary sues and ofc's . i was pretty confused . ive come to believe that i think my story is a mary sue . yes i have a sister in it but i have planned to have a few chapters and scenes where its just Dean and Sam . also in relevence to littlewings list on whata mary sue has . i have no intention of making my charcter better than everyone . to me she's regarded as the slow one . didn't do well at hunting but aint exactly great at school . i cant resist giving her a power but i think i only refer to it once or twice and i knwo mine isn't going to be loved by everyone . i cant have that because i feel that a story lke that seems like a dream . no one is loved by everyone , better than everyone and all that . but just saying

Totally off [whatever topic] you all seem to be discussing:

Is it just me, or does anyone else have a hard time finding really good (or original) Supernatural Fanfiction? Beyond the obvious resentment toward OC's oriented stories, I mean? Recently I've been scratching my head at the large amount of stories in this section of FF.NET, surprised at the lack of really good stories. At first, it wasn't hard to find one being new to this place, but lately its become harder and harder. [This'll probably become more a rant than a question posed.] Most of them are beginning to feel and read the same way, especially the ones based on episodes like "Asylum" - "Skin" - "Faith" - "Nightmare" - and everyone's obvious favorite - "Devil's Trap." But mostly with Asylum. Stories not based on the episodes, I noticed, rarely focus on brother's job (hunting) and focus more on Dean's promise to "protect his brother" and Sam's willingness to fly from under his brother's protective streak, to the point of getting trouble unintentionally. Thus, Dean gets bashed up in the process of a rescue. Others over embellish Sam and John arguing moments, Dean's supposed fear of Sam leaving him, Sam leaving for collage (never really read those much). Most fanfiction writers, I've noticed like to use the following phrases and words:

"Damnit Sam[my]/Dean! [Insert following sentence]."

"SAMMY! [NO!]"

"DEAN! [NO!]"

"**/ing/er"

"**"

"Jerk."

"Love you too, ** [jerk]."

"Shiteating grin."

"Little **."

And I'm wondering if there's a crucial episode or flashback I missed which used phrases after the capslocked 'Sammy'. Or is this popular slang in SN-fanfiction? Even if your not looking for the usual "argumentative" fanfic, these slangs manage to find their way into a story like it or not. That aside, I beginning to think I just need break from reading SN fanfictions and focus on other things at the moment. The fanfictions don't seem to bother me are the ones when the Brothers/The Father are getting along, and this usually happens in "Childhood" based fanfictions (usually before Sam turns 11, 12 or 13) and the occasional "humor" fiction at Sam's expense.

There.

Got that off my chest.

I expect to be flamed (or ignored) for this, but whatever.

Sakura123, I forgot to thank you profusely for recommending my fic. Thanks! I don't often get to see it actually recommended and it's always such a nice complement.

Ever since reading your post, I've been thinking about it and there are a lot of things that bug me about some of the fic out there, too. My biggest peeve is people who have Sam correct Dean for calling him Sammy. He hasn't done that on the show for several episodes...and it seems redundant to keep doing it now. Of course, I really hate the repeated "**" & "Jerk" comments that inevitably get sprinkled around. I do understand why people do it, though. It can be difficult to get the character voices right and continually come up with fresh ways to do it. And, I'm sure I'm not immune to this whole dilemma.

I got to read my first Mary Sue not too long ago and I just had to clap myself on the forehead because it was so obvious. That was the first one I had ever read because generally I only read recommendations or stuff on my favorite writer's favorite writer's lists. That helps to cut down on that kinda thing, but sometimes you can miss some good stuff.

Anyway, just my two cents, for whatever it's worth, lol.

Hi all, I'm kinda new here, but thought I'd throw a few Rec's out at you.

Of course all the stories by Ridley are awesome.

Also P.L Wynter.

I found two by Downwiththesupernatural which I loved also, being "Legion" which is completed and "The Game" which is not. There's been no update for a while, but I hope it comes soon.

I also really enjoy the parody/comedies out there, but they are so few and far between.

All the fics in "The Proper Feeding" series by Damerel are well worth checking out. They're hillarious in my opinion.

Okay then, Bye all!

Hi, i'm not really new to this site but i'm a new member. Now i know what is the meaning of mary-sue, OFC and OC. And i don't like to read mary-sue. I have a lot of ideas to write stories but the big problem is, i'm not good in English. Not good at all to write. Thanks a lot to the authors here. You guys are rock!

I love sad stories. Read this, so sad. Happy Birthday by ShadowMayne.

And this story is kinda funny and lot of angst. Freeze by Mishka89

Parental Instincts by BEKi of Dorvan. A chapter story but really good. From a teacher's POV.

A new story with a great start. Really original idea. Living in Sanctuary by Nixa Jane.

And finally of course In Reverse by Sodakey. But i don't know what happened with Sodakey. She's really great but there is no update for a long time. I hope she's okay. I love her story. This story has a good issues and great angst. One of great OCs you can find here.

Hope you like my recc. Enjoy your day!

Wow, I haven't participated in this discussion for a long time, but Single Minded, thanks for the recs. It's been really difficult to keep up with everything lately, even more difficult to sort through the Mary-Sues (no offense to those that like Mary-Sues). I fear the Dean's list is falling behind with stuff. (If anyone is interested in helping staff it a little, Aja and I could use the help. The basics are that we are not a very Mary-Sue friendly list, we try to agree on stuff before we put it up, we try to be concerned with grammer without being tooo overly picky of the occasional mistake. We prefer you have some experience with grammer, spelling, style, but Aja's the real guru in that area. So, if anyone is interested? I know I'm making it sound so wonderful and all, lol).

As for "In Reverse" I've also been wondering about it. I actually met Sodakey last August maybe? September? I don't exactly remember. We crossed paths for a wilderness medical course thingy I was taking. She seemed really driven and together. Very very nice. Very personable if not really personal. Very funny and kind of wry. I've shot off the occasional Email to her and she's always replied but I've sent her a couple in the last month and have heard nothing. I'm hoping she's just real busy or something. I guess it's selfish but I really want the end of her story. In Reverse lives on as one of my absolute favorites, finished or not....but uh...finished is always better. lol.

Hi, folks! Looking for another fic I started reading, but can't seem to find.

It was a pre-series/AU Brotherhood story about how Caleb came into the mix. It wasn't a Ridley story, but borrowed heavily from her AU (with permission). Can anyone shove me in the right direction?

Hi! I'm also looking for a story.

I thought I had marked as a favorite, but apparently I didn't do something right. It's a Wee!chester fic, one where there is something in Sam's closet. John's gone, Dean shoots the red-eyed monster and it's a rat. When John gets home, he finds Dean in the back yard trying to burn the rat. I've found several similar stories, but not the one I'm looking for. I'd appreciate it if anyone knows the title and author and could let me know!

thanks!

Hey, I was watchin' Bloodlust tonight and I was hit with an idea---not sure if I'll write it---and it's kind of like Blood Debt which is a good fic by the way---only Sam gets captured by vampires and bitten. And Lenore says to save him she'd have to claim him, which leads into a ref to my my vampire Cassie trilogies: Captive, House Of Fear, and Blood Ties. What do you think?

]I'm new here. Please, please forgive me if I inadvertently break rules or do something rude....I honestly don't mean to.

I'm posting because there's a story I read on the site awhile back and now can't find again. Do not remember title or author, of course, but I'm quite sure it was set "pre series" -- the boys are in their teens -- and had the family coping with an illness suddenly afflicting Dean. Leukemia, I think, but I could be misremembering. There was a beautiful passage in which the family are outside walking somewhere and Dean looks up at the sun and then crumples to the ground, the author beautifully describing how Sam's and John's world crumbles with him. For personal reasons I've so been wanting to read this again this week, and my inability to find it is driving me crazy! Does anyone here recognize this? Thanks so much in advance and, again, my apologies if this sort of posting is not welcomed in this forum.

Please allow me to thank all you talented authors out there for providing so many hours of pleasureable (and sometimes cryable) reading.

I have a story i'm working on, but not sure what category to put it under if I did post. it involves a woman with Jensen, and then leads to a 3 some between the girl, and both actors after she realizes that they don't just work, and play basketball up in Vancouver. It's not about sam and dean really though.

Hey!! So, I'm new to this forum - have been on the site for a while. Also - I'm new to the world of Supernatural. My friend is a long time fan, but we have a little bit of a plot going on a story, and I was wondering if it would be something anyone would even find INTERESTING before I posted it. Most of the stories I post are Batman themed - except for a little comedy piece I wrote in Supernatural for this same friend to help cure her writer's block... it's... interesting.

But this new story initially began as an RP, so it does have OFCs... four. But none of them really end up with Sam or Dean. (There's flirting, of course... but nothing big.) I know there is a huge natural aversion among a lot of readers and writers of fanfiction toward OFCs, and was wondering if a story like this was posted, would it even be given the time of day?

Any tips or suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks!!

hey guys,

I know this is ever so slightly off topic...but I'm new to the SPN fanfiction. I've been writing fanfiction for years...but I've just recently in the past months become an AVID fan of SPN. I'd love to get to know some of the writers on here and join the community.

I also have a story up--called "Echo Lycanthropy" if any of you wanna check it out.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4743336/1/Echo_Lycanthropy

I'd love to hear from some of you. Can anyone point me to some awesome stories out right now? I'm reading a lot--but there's just so many!

Anyways--sorry to bother you guys.

Hi guys! I'm new to this forum, actually I'm new to SPN fanfiction. I have only watched the first 2 seasons and some episodes from the third, but I know quite a few things about what happens.

I don't understan the 'b*tch-jerk' argument...It's true that many authors use it, but Sam and Dean use it a lot too in the show!

I also have a fanfic to recomment! It's not complete yet but I think it's really good! Here's the link: Reality Check and the summary: 'After a bad hunt, Dean wakes up to find that nothing is as it should be. Rubber rooms and padded walls, with no hope of escape, unless he can convince Sam that he's not crazy.' The rating's T...Check it out it's pretty amazing!
