Sadie LovegoodTopic: Harry Potter Character of the Week
Okay, so this is a new thread that is under my command unless I say otherwise! It is an invention of mine designed to ignite HP-based discussion and debate (but PLEASE respect everyone else’s opinions!). It is called ‘Character of the Week’ and each week, I will post some vital stats on any HP character in the whole fandom, no matter how big or small (but if they are rather minor I will pair two together), and in addition to stats, I will post some links to fanfiction with the chosen character as the main character. If you know of a story with this character, feel free to post the link. Not only will this spark debate, but hopefully it will also help those wanting to write a story about this character. Also, after this week, you can vote (once per week) on what character will be the next week’s character, and so on. There are so many characters there shouldn’t be dupes. To start off, I will make the first character of the week one of my personal favorites… Nymphadora Lupin (nee Tonks) Age (when introduced): approximately 22 years old Book Introduced: Order of the Phoenix Sex: female Species: Human Blood Status: Half blood Hair Color: Changes at will (it is suggested her natural, unchanged color is light brown), tends to like it kept shorter Eye Color: Changes at will (natural color unknown) Other Physical Features: A pale, heart-shaped face, tendency to dress in t-shirts and jeans when not in work robes Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff Wand: unknown Occupation: Auror Special Abilities: Metamorphamgus (i.e. can change physical appearance at will), proficient dualist, could produce a powerful Patronus and use it to communicate Strengths: brave, skilled, trained under Alastor Moody, passionate, knowledgable, loyal Weaknesses: notably clumsy, emotionally charged, to the point it would affect her ability to use her powers Parents: Andromeda Black (pure-blooded mother); Ted Tonks (Muggle-born father) Other Notable Family: Aunts Bellatrix and Narcissa Black, first-cousin-once-removed of Sirius and Regulus Black, cousin of Draco Malfoy (it should be noted that due to Black Family protocol Tonks was never considered a Black and it is suggested that she never thought of herself as such) Special Relationships: Maintained a close bond with her mentor, Alastor Moody (deceased); seemed to grow fond of Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley, keeping them entertained at Order meetings. Known Spouses/Relationships: Remus Lupin, (fanonically, she is commonly connected with Bill or Charlie Weasley) Children: 1 son, Theodore Remus Lupin State of Character by the end of DH: Dead, having participated in the Battle of Hogwarts and losing a duel with Bellatrix Lestrange Brief Summary of Early Life: Attended Hogwarts in the same year as Charlie Weasley. Graduated in 1991 and commenced Auror training, although some bumps in the road occurred due to her lack of grace (i.e. failing Stealth and Tracking). She nevertheless qualified in either late 1993 or early 1994, just in time to be recruited in the Order of the Phoenix. The Reviews LoungeWow, Sadie. This is awesome. :D I can't wait to read these fics on Tonks. Also, I have a question. Why exactly is Tonks one of your favorite characters? I mean, I find her likeable, but she's not one of my favorites. (Then again, I can't seem to EVER decide on a favorite character...) |
TheWordFountainAlso, sorry - that was me, Wordy, in the RL account. *sigh* |
Sadie LovegoodAlso, I have a question. Why exactly is Tonks one of your favorite characters? I mean, I find her likeable, but she's not one of my favorites. (Then again, I can't seem to EVER decide on a favorite character...) I guess it was always the relation factor for me. I related to Tonks a lot. She and I are both clumsy, moody, and in love with Remus Lupin! And I love her powers, I would so want them. But I really couldn't find a character I could wholly relate to in the series until I was introduced to her. Hermione was too bookish, Pansy was a betch. Ginny was a Mary-Sue. Lily was dead. Luna came close, but she and Tonks came out in the same book, and Luna was a little too spacey for me. |
TheWordFountainSee, I admire all her qualities. I think that Tonks is a VERY awesome character, and I can definitely see why so many people like her, but I just don't relate because she's TOO clumsy and moody, at least for me. |
Sadie LovegoodGee, thanks. Apparently I'm too clumsy and moody...haha kidding. Tonks is pretty neat, in my opinion. Charli will kill me for making her the first Character if the Week. |
TheWordFountainNo, sorry, didn't mean it like that. She's just too much like that for me to relate. It's not a bad thing. But why will Charli kill you, haha? Everyone loves Tonks. |
Sadie LovegoodCharli doesn't. She definitely doesn't... |
TheWordFountainOh. Now, see this is a good way to keep the topic going. You can speak for Charli. Why doesn't she like Tonks? Also, sadly, I think I'm going to have to go to bed. I'm so ready to fall asleep. | #9 Sep 09th, 8:49pm . Edited Sep 09th, 8:49pm

Cuban Sombrero GalSadie, you missed Lady Bracknell on your recs list. Her fics are amazing. I think the thing that I first loved about Tonks was that it was nice to see a strong female character that was older than Harry (eg. not Hermione, Ginny, Luna, etc), and have her fleshed out a little. It was just nice to see a female Auror that could match it with the men and stick up for herself. And yeah, I'm a feminist. So sue me. ;) |
Sadie LovegoodSorry Cubsie, but I haven't read Lady Bracknell yet. |
bookwormofmassiveproportionsSorry Cubsie, but I haven't read Lady Bracknell yet Le shock! Do so immediately! She is made of awesome! And as to Tonks, I absolutely ADORED her in OotP - actually she was probably the high point of that book for me, but she sort of stopped being interesting in HBP, I mean R/T is awesome, but I found it really hard to respect Tonks after she pretty much turns into a wreck and kind of emotionally blackmails Remus into a relationship... (and plus, I was cheering for Tonks/Snape anyway.) |
Sadie LovegoodTonks/Snape?!? Um, B-Womp, that's sooooo unnatural. |
bookwormofmassiveproportions*Sigh* I know... a lot of people thought I was deranged... |
thelightningstrike*jumps in* Great idea! I, like Wordy, love Tonks, but not enough to make her my favourite character. I think her relationship with Remus is a really interesting plot point and gave Remus something I really wanted him to have when he finally realised his love for her. The moping faze, however, in HBP, did somewhat annoy me- still, she is a fantastic character and very worthy of the first mention in this topic! But seriously- Tonks/Snape!?! | #15 Sep 10th, 9:17am . |
bookwormofmassiveproportionsOh, come on! It's not that weird! (But yeah, Remus finally being bulldozed into a relationship was awesome!) |
TheWordFountainI actually thought the moping phase in the book was kind of adorable. And I definitely am a R/T shipper. :D |
bookwormofmassiveproportionsWell, I mean it could have been, but it just went overboard with her being all monotone and 'wah, lovelife phail!' ish, ya know? |
TheWordFountainYeah, I can see where you're coming from, but for me I just thought it was adorable. :D |
Sadie LovegoodI actually kind of liked how she had some emotional instability. I like how Rowling made it so not everyone in the HPverse is a Terminator. People, even wizards, have flaws, and aside from Ginny-Sue and a few other characters, I like how she gives the characters real flaws so we know they aren't perfect, unlike certain Mormon writers who think vampires sparkle. Tonks is great because she does have that BAMFishness story: she's one of only a few young Aurors in England, she's fought the Dark Arts firsthand and has connections, both good and bad, to the notorious House of Black, she's brave, smart, cool, has a neat style, and is herself and doesn't choke up around meeting Harry Potter unlike so many others who are star struck. But she wants the love of someone who's refusing her advances...now who DOESN'T relate to that somehow? Who HASN'T had a crush on someone who didn't reciprocate? And she reacted to that very naturally...I'd be depressed too! | #20 Sep 11th, 6:10am . Edited Sep 11th, 6:15am

thelightningstrikeHmm. I understand that it was quite adorable and realistic and everything, but in the situation she was in having her cousin just murdered and both the wizarding and muggle worlds in turmoil- I don't know, it just got to me. I did love though that Remus got someone to love after pretty much everyone else he loved had died- I thought it was a really touching and clever pairing. I just think that because Tonks is such a strong auror and everything that maybe she wouldn't have been quite that depressed, but I agree that for the sake of love, it was very realistic. Who knows, maybe I'm just lying to myself because I'm such a -le gasp- feminist and I don't think any girls should get that way over a guy. I do understand how hard unrequited love is, though, so maybe I'm being too hard on her. |
Sadie LovegoodI'm a feminist too, and I adore the pairing just the way it is. It's pairings like Edward/Bella that make the Steinem in me cringe and weep for humanity. |
thelightningstrikeLOL, I loved your Twilight quip from before about the Mormon author who thinks vampires sparkle. Dear god, I swear- Twilight drives me mad. I used to like it pre-Breaking Dawn, but now... eugh. I suppose you're right. They are a great pairing, and as you said, no one is without their flaws. To start a new discussion: One thing I do love about Tonks is her unexpectedly good relationship with Moody. | #23 Sep 11th, 10:13am . Edited Sep 11th, 10:43am

Sadie LovegoodHow is it unexpected? Moody's not a bad guy (at least not the real one), just really gruff. I love Moody's soft side for Tonks, and I smiled and went 'Aw!' inside when he scrambled over to her unconscious body in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and tried to wake her up, even though he was injured. I once read a Moody/Tonks and I just shook and said the author was clearly misguided. Moody/Tonks is a surrogate father/daughter relationship, seeing as Moody apparently was too nutty to settle down and have a daughter of his own. They kind of have a connection. Moody's obviously somewhat of an outsider, and Tonks didn't give me the impression she was Miss Popular, but more like someone like me, who had friends but isn't the most popular person around either, if you know what I mean. |
TheWordFountainI actually think of Moody as a really close Uncle for Tonks. But I never really realized that connection. |
Cuban Sombrero GalI totally agree - it's a more a mentoring, uncle-type relationship than a romantic one. Besides, Moody and Tonks' kids could never be as cute as Teddy. ;) |
thelightningstrikeI meant unexpected as in because of how different their characters are, not that I don't want them to have that uncle-type relationship- and I certainly didn't mean that I thought they should be together romantically! Sorry for the confusion, I must have put it across badly. I absolutely love his protectiveness over her, especially at the department of mysteries like you said. I think that because of how closed off Moody is in his own character- 'Constant Vigilance' and etc- that it's so lovely for him to have someone to really care about. I think their friendship is definitely one of the best parts of the fifth book. And true, Moody II would never, ever be as great as Teddy :P | #27 Sep 12th, 1:27am . Edited Sep 12th, 1:30am

TheWordFountainLOL. Also, for some reason, I think it's fitting that Tonks is the one he cares about. Although, I'm not sure why. |
thelightningstrikeMe too. I just think because they are sort of opposites on the auror scale, sort of, it makes it extra special that he chooses to look after her. If he'd survived the war I think he'd have been a really good uncle/grandad/friend sort of thing to Teddy, too. |
TheWordFountainI think we should get back to Tonks. XD How does everyone feel about her and Teddy? Any thoughts at all? |
bookwormofmassiveproportionsOh, it's totally a 100 on the cosmic scale of injustice that Tonks never gets to really be there for Teddy... |
Sadie Lovegood***Brief off-subject post** How is it my posts aren't showing up on the Randomness? I have brilliantly awesome news and I can't share it with anyone!! |
TheWordFountainI think she'd be a truly epic mother. And I think Teddy would've turned out a lot differently had Tonks been there. |
TheWordFountainI don't know Sadie. There's a post in the "what the heck?" review thread that says it's there, but doesn't show up when you look for it. I think it's a glitch. |
Sadie LovegoodDammit. And this news is fecking awesome. |
TheWordFountainWhat is it? LOL. |
Sadie LovegoodTo stay on topic: Tonks and teddy would've been the most adorable mother and son ever. Now to the REAL reason for this post because Randomness is being a Randoma$$: So, I am currently in a state of euphoria. Seriously, I feel like I could fly. Last night I made plans to watch Labyrinth with this freshman, Patrick (though everyone calls him Cupcake), because he'd never seen it (which I felt was a sacrilege and a shame). So he came over to my room and we watched it. After that, I went through his bag and found this novel that looked really interesting, and he suggested reading it aloud to me. I agreed, thinking the idea was cute, and he read chapter one. I insisted on reading chapter 2 to him, and while I did so, he began running his hand up and down my knee. Then he took the book back for the third chapter, and by the time he finished, we were holding hands with my head on his shoulder in my bed. He ended up staying the night. We didn't have sex or anything, but we ended up staying up talking in bed until 5AM, then sleeping in each others arms until noon. We've decided to try dating each other for awhile and see if we feel a full relationship can come of this. I have the feeling it will...he said after we went to lunch today he wants to keep dating me. When he kissed me last night, I felt lightning going up and down my back, and he called me beautiful. I am over the fecking moon. High on life and love. Wow. wow. Wow-wee. And who knew reading books aloud to each other could constitute as foreplay? ;) | #37 Sep 12th, 2:58pm . |
TheWordFountainDamn, Sadie. That sounds awesome. :D |
Cuban Sombrero GalAnd who knew reading books aloud to each other could constitute as foreplay? ;) This is the bit I find awesome. Anyone who reads is a win in my book. Anyway, to get back on topic - I honestly never saw Tonks as a mother until DH, but when I read it, it seemed to fit perfectly. |
bookwormofmassiveproportions@Sadie: Your news is made of win! It’s nice to know that happy relationship-age over book reading is not impossible – but (don’t hate me) I’m slightly inclined to giggle at the thought of a guy nicknamed Cupcake… As to Tonks’ mothering abilities, I personally think that neither her nor the readers get to see any because Teddy’s only, what?, one or two months when Tonks dies, right? Barely enough time to even get a chance to really experience motherhood, I think. In some ways, it’s even more of a tragedy than Lily and Harry… |
Sadie Lovegood@Sadie: Your news is made of win! It’s nice to know that happy relationship-age over book reading is not impossible – but (don’t hate me) I’m slightly inclined to giggle at the thought of a guy nicknamed Cupcake… Ha, long story behind that... And I agree, B-Womp. At least Lily had a year with her son. Tonks had no time to spread her motherly wings... |
StoryGirl02I cried when Tonks died. Anyways, back to the point. Tonks would have been the most awesome mother, the kind of one that can crack actual funny jokes. Tonks is possibly the best female character in Harry Potter, at least to my eyes. She only appeared for three books, but J.K wrote her in such a way that you could understand who she was, even without a ton of background information, and hardly any scenes. I was so annoyed when I watched Half-Blood. That's all I'm going to say on that. @Sadie: I'm so happy for you! He sounds sweet, and I'd love to know a boy who is content just to lay in bed and read with me. *smiles* | #42 Sep 13th, 1:35am . Edited Sep 13th, 1:38am

TheWordFountainI was annoyed when I first saw OotP because Tonks wasn't in it nearly enough, and I felt as if her hair didn't fit the description. XD |
Sadie LovegoodI was annoyed when I first saw OotP because Tonks wasn't in it nearly enough, and I felt as if her hair didn't fit the description. XD It doesn't. Her hair in the movie is purple and shoulder-length. Not short, spiky, and pink. And it didn't change at her will, it only changed involuntarily when she got ticked at Mad Eye. And yeah, she is lethally underused in the films. Both of them. Come on, one scene?!? And a non-canon scene at that?! WTF? That's a major McPhail. | #44 Sep 13th, 8:25am . Edited Sep 13th, 8:40am
TheWordFountainYes, and that's majorly annoying that it changed with her emotions because that's NOT how it works. |
Sadie LovegoodSupposedly the reason her hair was purple and not pink was because pink was associated with Umbridge and they didn't want viewers thinking she was an agent for her or something. Still doesn't explain why her hair was mousy brown in HBP even though she was already with Remus... BTW, it's almost time for the next Character of the Week...any requests/ideas? |
thelightningstrikeReally? That's the reason? How ridiculous. Meh, the films annoy me so much. Umm... a Death Eater? Seeing as we've already had an Order member? Just an idea, whoever you want is fine :) |
Sadie LovegoodOoh! A Death Eater sounds interesting. Also, since we've had a female, I was thinking a male character, and we could alternate. |
thelightningstrikeYeah, great idea! So which? |
Cuban Sombrero GalI'm totally up for talking about Voldemort. Just 'cause that would be a fascinating discussion. |
