mergirl007Topic: Chat Thread Number One: 17 More Years to Go!
Like IM on the forums. Talk to whomever is here, and if no one is present, leave a nice surprise for the next person to come by! Or just act forlorn and moan about how everyone is deserting you, I really don't care. So! Random question to start this off: Has anyone eaten dirt? (Mer used to make mud pies... but I'm pretty sure she stopped eating after the first bite. I think. I'll have to go talk to her and find out.) ;) |
nathan-pYes, I have eaten dirt. Tasted all right, but nothing special, as I remember. Very, very gritty. Don't eat it regularly. You'll kill your teeth. |
mergirl007But aren't we all made of dirt anyway? You know "ashes to ashes and dust to dust"... Or maybe I'm just quoting Gladiator again. *hearts Russell Crowe* |
EnergyAngelI've been dared to lick a cinder block that has been in the dirt. Yuck. got stuck to my tongue. |

mergirl007The cinder block or the dirt? | #5 Sep 04th 2008, 10:45am

mergirl007i meant ashes to ashes dust to dust its from the bible originally Yes, but Russell Crowe is sexier than the Bible. Therefore, Russell Crowe says it. :D (Okay, so maybe RC doesn't actually say it... but that old man who does is in Gladiator!) something tells me that wasnt really worth it. I agree. You should have held out for at least five dollars. | #13 Sep 15th 2008, 10:57am

mergirl007Ahem. Child abuse is never awesome. Except when I'm the abuser, of course. Then it turns into an act of love. ;) (By the way, Brie, do you mind punctuating and capitalizing correctly? I'm trying to keep this "phangurl!!!11!!!1!" free, and when everyone posting obviously has control of the English language, the phangurls tend to go elsewhere. Thanks.) | #17 Sep 25th 2008, 10:42am

briechelleYes I can. The only reason I havent been is because in order to get an internet signal my computer has to be on the arm of the chair. Its kind of awkward to type like that. How long do you think it would take me to read war and peace? | #18 Sep 25th 2008, 1:57pm
nathan-pDon't read it! Seriously, it would take me at least a week to get through, and I read fast. It's a deathly boring book. If you gotta read something by a dead Russian, read either Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, Doctor Zhivago, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, or The Gulag Archipelago. (Or all of the above.) Their authors are, respectively, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Pasternak, and Solzhenitsyn. Gulag Archipelago is also ridiculously long, but it's an entertaining read. | #19 Sep 26th 2008, 6:46pm

briechelleI think I want to try and read in 4 days. I like to challenge myself. I will take those other books into consideration. My dad doesnt like me reading sci-fi fantasy. So I figure historical books at least he wont give me dirty looks. | #20 Sep 27th 2008, 12:33am

EnergyAngelWhy in the world would he disapprove of the SciFi/Fantasy genre? | #21 Sep 27th 2008, 7:21am
nathan-pHonestly? There are very few respected sf authors, and only one well-respected fantasy author. Both genres are in sad states at the moment, what with the majority of fiction in both genres being of a few cliched types. (Fantasy is the worst: a great deal of high fantasy is a terrible, terrible ripoff of either LOTR or World of Warcraft. Or both.) However, if you're looking for some awesome sf/fantasy, here are my personal recs: LOTR, of course. And the accompanying materials as well. Dune by Frank Herbert. The sequels written by Frank are pretty good; those by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson are airplane/beach reads only. Any Philip K. Dick. Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson veers into these genres, and is also an awesome book. H. P. Lovecraft tends to get bundled into Fantasy rather than Horror where he belongs. But he's amazing, so definitely pick up something of his. (I like the Herbert West stories in particular.) Stephen King's Dark Tower series are pretty great, but not quite on the A-list of Respectable Authors. That's all I've got at the moment, apologies. Also, good on you for going for some Tolstoy. Dead Russians are about the most respectable authors you can read, as far as what people think of them. (As far as trashy action novels go, there are some pretty excellent parts in Crime and Punishment. Gulag Archipelago is about 10% Gulag slang, and One Day uses a great deal of slang as well. If you're looking for a translator rec, Constance Garnett is the way to go for Dostoevsky, although there's a husband/wife duo whose names escape me who did a grand job on The Idiot. Though, of course, if you want to get the most out of any work, read it in the original language -- there's no substitute.) Right, that post is long enough. :) Best of luck. | #22 Sep 27th 2008, 9:55pm

briechelleThank you for imparting your wisdom. If you read my profile you'll find that I read a lot. I'm in the middle of like 4 different series' right now. It gets kind of confusing. I don't know how I can keep from melding together. Does anyone else NOT like macaroni and cheese? | #23 Oct 04th 2008, 3:32am

FanlessI'm 16 and I don't really care about getting my license. I think my parents want me to learn to drive soon, though, so that they don't have to take me everywhere ^_^ | #29 Nov 20th 2008, 8:50am
mergirl007I haven't even taken Driver's Ed yet, and I'll be seventeen in just a few months. I wouldn't really care, but who's going to drive me to college next year? | #30 Nov 27th 2008, 10:02pm
FanlessI WILL! I'll just figure it out along the way. xD Plus, I'll be 17 in a few weeks. | #31 Dec 01st 2008, 8:46am
nathan-pI'm up for college fairly soon, and still don't have my permit (which is explained by my age and laziness). However, for the first year, until I'm actually 18 (due to age fuckery etc. etc.), I'll be able to take public transport to school. Which is gonna blow like no other, because I'll have to cut way the hell back on sleep to catch the right bus and train with time left to walk from the train station to the campus. | #32 Dec 03rd 2008, 8:38pm
FanlessYuck. Wait, train? Just how far away from you is this college? | #33 Dec 04th 2008, 9:15am
nathan-pEh, not hella far. Light rail, not srs train. Mapquest doesn't know what the fuck I'm talking about, but it's within fifteen? miles. (I can't do directions/distance.) I am American, after all. (we don't get srs trains here.) | #34 Dec 04th 2008, 9:25pm

FanlessLight rail is what I figured. And I too, shockingly, am American. | #35 Dec 05th 2008, 9:27am

briechelleI'm glad I'm not the only one. Is it weird for a sixteen year old girl to not like shopping? |
EnergyAngelPsh. No. |
mergirl007'Course not. Ignore my longing glances at imaginary clothes racks, it's just because WalMart has been my version of the mall for close to two years now. (School's in a very small town.) |
FanlessPoor you. I'm not too near a mall, but I do a lot of thrifting. |
I. V. GreenI'm also allergic to mac and cheese. It's okay, though, there's always soy. Before anyone goes into a chorus of "ew"s, please ask yourself, "Have you ever had soy?" Sorry about the lecture, but I've gotten too many "ew"s to stand. |
mergirl007I had soy milk once, and yes, it was disgusting. My sister has saved me and introduced me to H&M. Cheap cute clothes: iLike. |
