DracoriTopic: Be Good for Goodness' Sake!
I'm sure a lot of you heard about that advertisement with the picture of a Santa saying "Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake!" that was put on the metro buses. And of course it's no surprise that Christians got all up in arms about it. I'm sick and tired of these people thinking that free speech only applies to them when it doesn't. If Christians can slap God all over everything and spread their message, then athesits have just as much right to put ads on a bus. Besides, I think it promotes a good message. It's saying be good for the sake of being good, not because you think some invisible man is watching you and is going to send you to Hell if you don't score extra credit points with him. | #1 Dec 12th 2008, 12:33pm . IrindigloIt's kind of funny since Christmas is a holiday for Christanity. It seems the Christians could read it as: "why are you believing in God when you can just be good" or more specifically "you don't have to believe in God when you can just behave." As oppose to: "You don't have to believe in God to aspire to be good. You can be good for goodness's sake." Which is true. Religion is the same way as the cast system(minus the unfair, unequal part of it). The cast system was made to help everyone find their role in society. For example a married lady with a kid is a mother at some part of the day and if she works whatever she is. Same with a man and even a child. It helps maintain order but it is not necessary to disallow other casts to not mingle with certain casts. Same with relgion and relgious wars. Religion is just there to guide people. | #2 Dec 14th 2008, 8:18pm . Edited Dec 14th 2008, 8:24pm

DracoriWell actually Christmas is now considered a secular holiday, and if you trace it back to its roots, you'll see that it was originally a pagan holiday. Some of the pagan traditions are still celebrated today. So Christianity really has nothing to do with it. The Christians basically hijacked it and slapped a Christian label on it. But yeah, I can see how they can misinterpret the message. But even so, if their faith is as strong as they say it is, then this shouldn't really bother them so much. I don't see how a message on a bus is really threatening their faith. |

froward1Interesting isn't it how Christmas isn't in the bible but if you read the old testament (the same place you find the 10 commandments) there are actually 613 rules for living your life, not just 10. |
DracoriOh very interesting indeed, and no one follows those rules. Hell, no one CAN follow all the rules, they're damn near impossible to not break. But a lot of people think if they just follow the Ten Commandments, they'll be safe. |

DracoriAh, lookie here! A bunch of ignorant morons who don't have a clue about what they're talking about, and clearly have not read the First Amendment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5B3CgN-s2s But then again, it's Foxs News. You can't exactly expect much intelligence anyway. | #6 Dec 17th 2008, 11:45pm

Incy Little SpiderSee if I believe in anything it's just try to live a good life. Why do you have to praise some guy who might ot even exist whe you could be doing better things with your life? If I die I don't want to go to some place in the sky and kiss a guy's feet while stroking his ego. I would rather just be in peace. Man, if that's what's going to happen when I die I'd rather cheat Death and run for it. ^^ |
DracoriExactly my point. |
Incy Little SpiderI was reading this book and I found some quotes that really got to me: "People don't do right because of the fear of God or love of him. You do the right thing because the world doesn't make sense if you don't." "People were better off learning to rely on themselves or each other, instead of running around praying for things they weren't going to get." "Everyone says 'Jesus' so much around here, you forget sometimes who he was supposed to be." |
DracoriI really love the second quote :) |
Incy Little SpiderARRR! Did you see that Bible-thumper over at the PPG Fandom? The "Bad Influence" crap??? PPG is my safe haven from people trying to shove bible readings down my throat and trying to get the "devil" out of my system! NOW THEY'VE INVADED IT! SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!!!! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE I LOOK! THERE'S PROBABLY ONE RIGHT OUTSIDE MY WINDOW TRYING TO PREACH AT ME!!! (screams and runs off to hide in the closet sobbing hysterically) |
DracoriYeah, I gave that person a nice little review. I was thinking the same thing when I saw that story. The first thing that came to mind was "Holy crap, there's no escaping them. We're not safe anywhere." |
Incy Little SpiderI come with a story! My Dad went to an all boy catholic school when he was younger. His older brother became a Buddist. The school tried to expel him because of him being a Buddist. He was also homosexual. I have never met this man before and my Dad refuses to speak about him. I haven't met any of my Dad's brothers before and probably never will... It's kinda random, but I felt like saying it. :\ |
DracoriHmm...you know, after reading that, I'm thinking now that I should make a "Personal Experiences" thread :) I'm sure everyone probably has a lot of stories to tell. |
