froward1I think fundamentalism is born out of a combination of ignorance, fear and being closed minded. The fear part coming from a religion that "preys" on young minds, instilling the fear of eternal damnation in hell, forever~ for the simple act of questioning. Ignorance and being closed minded go hand in hand. The unwillingness to consider other options. Sadly fundies aren't the only ones with this affliction. I think for us to be able to change the hearts and minds of others we have to guard against the arrogance and "all knowingness" that Atheist sometimes portray. And with this in mind I have a challenge: To Atheist and theist alike. The premise is this: the bible is the word of god as it states. As such it is supernatural ie: "infallable". It is stated as such in the bible, for the sake of argument let's say it is so. Now, an all knowing, all seeing, god who has his own book should not have the need for others to explain, decipher or decode it. Anyone who reads the bible should read it as being the true "word"; by this I mean the literal word. When it says kill it means kill, when it says 1 day it means 1 day. You have to assume (for this discussion) that god knows what he is talking about, right? On top of that god should have a book filled with logic, reason, compassion and morality. Top to bottom, front to back, cover to cover. Now the challenge: read the bible..... yes the bible, old and new, king james version as it has not been cleaned up as much as some of the others. After the bible pick another religions "bible", I chose the Koran. After reading both compare them to one another. Then compare them to what you have been told about a loving god. Do they mesh? And if you consider yourself a christian and you have not read the bible, or considered other religions, are you really a christian. Shouldn't a christian have read the book of his god? |
