Verbs

A verb is a word or a group of words used to express time while showing an action.

An action verb is a very that tells what action someone or something is performing.

(Underlined word=subject Bolded word=verb italicized word= to whom the action is being performed to.

EX1: The dog bit the boy. Bit is the action taking place in the sentence. The dog performed the action.

EX2: Pooja will present her research at the conference. Will present is the action that is taking or will be taking place in the sentence. Pooja will do that action.

Transitive action verbs

An action verb is transitive is it directs action toward someone or something named in the same sentence.

EX1: Pat carried her books to the lecture on Asia.

EX2: Bill reads books about Asia.

Intransitive action verbs

An action verb is intransitive if it does not direct action toward someone or something named in the same sentence.

EX1: Pat rode home from the lecture.

EX2: Bill reads every night before going to bed.

Passive voice:

In sentences written in passive voice, the subject receives the action expressed in the verb; the subject is acted upon. The agent performing the action may appear in a "by the . . ." phrase or may be omitted.

EX1: The boy was bitten by the dog.

EX2: Research will be presented by Pooja at the conference.

Linking verbs

A linking verb is a verb that connects a word at or near the beginning of a sentence with a word at or near the end. *The most common linking verb is be*

EX1: Sarah is an astronaut.

EX2:He was glad.

Other verbs may be used in the same way as be to link two parts of a sentence.

Other linking verbs

appear, feel look, seem, sound, taste, become, grow, remain, smell, stay, turn

EX: The situation on board remained serious.

A verb is functioning as a linkng verb, if, am, are, or is cam logically be subsituted for the verb.

Linking verbs

The pears taste sweet.

The pears are sweet.

Action verbs

I taste the red pepper.

I am the red pepper.

Helping Verbs

Helping verbs are verbs that can be added to another verb to make a single verb phrase. Any of the many forms of be as well as some other verbs can be used as helping verbs.

Helping verbs other than the form of be

do, have, had, will, can, does, has, shall, might, could, did, would, should, must, may

Verb phrases are created by the addition of helping verbs to other verbs.

Verb phrases

HV Verbs

am talking

did play

can write

will be studying

should have seen

might have been considered

With out helping verb: They sing in the chorus.

With: They will sing in the chorus.

OR

They might sing in the chorus.
