tafchinTopic: Exploring the darker side of LOTR
I've been bitten by a plot bunny and was wondering if anyone would be willing to provide input/criticisms/comments before I embark on my insane venture. My writing is typically a 'butterfly and unicorn' style where everyone ends up happy. I want to challenge myself by writing a piece that explores the darker side of humanity. Here's sort of where I'm heading: -I want to avoid creating a Mary Sue or even a reverse Mary Sue [like an all powerful minion of Sauron]. My character will be a normal human with normal abilities. However, the human heart has the capacity for great good or great evil, the only thing unusual about my character will be that she leans to the darker side. -My character will plop into ME with full knowledge of LOTR and the goal of changing the outcome. I have a healthy respect for canon so I do not intend to change events rather I want to work my character in to flow with canon. For example, I'm thinking she'll encourage Eowyn's pursuit of Aragorn in hopes of disrupting his union with Arwen. It's going to backfire on her because my character will only end up contributing to the angst that drives Eowyn to face the Witch King. -I'm still working on what motivates my character to want to change canon in the first place. I also haven't figured out what her ending will be. Perhaps I'll let her go insane after she sees all her devious plots end up in butterflies and unicorns...just kidding. |
