Monty TwainTopic: Are You a Homes or a Watson? Just thinking, we do all have little bits of Holmes we take for life other than the odd quote, though the reason we read these stories is probably on some level because we see ourselves in the characters. For example- I like music, I'm a bit eccentric, [sometimes over-]dramatic, I value intellect and honesty higher than most other virtues, I'm at times a kind of recluse... I seem to be Holmes. But I appear to have morphed into a Watson, too- I'm interested in medicine [possibly want to be a doctor], I'm a writer [something we can all sympathise with], I'm sensitive [at times]and loyal. Which of our duo's qualities do you guys have, and do you see any that you might have developed since reading the Holmes stories? Or are we just all just reading a book we like because of such qualities? Am I spending too much time psycho-analysing myself? Tell me, I'm interested-- I've been turning this over in my head now for a couple of days. | #1 Mar 12th 2008, 12:23pm

KCSMmm. *rubs hands*The only Watson qualities I have are the love of writing and loyalty to my friends - I am by and large a Holmes and always have been. I'm a loner - I have only two close friends and even then I am perfectly fine if I don't see them for weeks on end. I am capable of amusing myself and do, to the point of being anti-social. I am analytical and logical as opposed to emotional - definitely not a people person. I also have odd habits and quirks that others find extremely annoying. I am sarcastic and have been decribed as having an abrasive nature until you get to know me. I don't cry or show any emotion actually very easily - and it takes a lot to get me riled. But don't attack anything I believe or anyone I care about unless you want to be summarily dragged out into the street and shot. I don't defend myself as vigorously as I defend my friends. I am a musician (piano) but I even tried the violin for three years - was lousy, but I tried it! Since the Canon has been a part of my life for over ten years, I can't really see if I added these qualities as an unconscious copying of my favourite characters or not - in all likelihood, yes. Who's next? | #2 Mar 12th 2008, 12:33pm

Monty Twainoh, I forgot about the sarcasm- though that is a bit of a, uh, "Twain" family trait. We sit, we debate. We debate, we use the English language as a tool/weapon. The next question would be, do you prefer irony or sarcasm? I like irony if I'm in normal conversation [sarcasm is a quick way to lose friends if you don't know a person well], but if I'm insulting a person, full sarc-ahead. Oh, and puns. Though that's a bit pawky, again. :) |
|
KCSYeah, it's an "S" family characteristic too, at least on my dad's side. Mom is totally not amused by our verbal sparring matches.Irony is good, but I prefer plain old sarcasm; granted, I don't just let it loose on total strangers. My friends (the few I actually have) know me well enough to expect it and usually give as good as they get. Never been big on puns, meself - unless they're original. I just like to debate and good-naturedly tease anyone who gets in my way and not-so-good-naturedly insult anyone who really ticks me off. |
|
Monty TwainI get ticked off unnecessarily by most stupid people. I make allowances in some exceptions, but otherwise I will not speak to a person who is being an arse. For example, there is a girl who rides on the same bus as me every morning who pretends to be stupid for attention, but she is actually really bright. I'm ruthless with her.| #5 Mar 13th 2008, 12:24am . Edited Mar 14th 2008, 2:18pm

rabidsamfanWatson for me. I see, but observing comes with an effort, and I'm far too likely to add the 'romance' to my tales for them to be at all logical.| #6 Mar 14th 2008, 12:35pm

Monty TwainI carry about a notebook (now this is really sad) that I bought because it looked like the sort of thing Watson would have liked. I wasn't looking for one, really. I have lots of notebooks. But this is leather bound, a little smaller than A5, a sharp red. It's beautiful. I write all my Holmes stories [and a lot of other stories] in it before I post them. |
|
VHunter07Oh that is an interesting question! Looks like we've got more Holmeses' than Watsons'....lol. Truthfully, I couldn't say which I am more like. I love to write...from poems to novels I can't keep my pencil OFF the paper. I could be a doctor, as violence/blood/gore have no effect upon me whatsoever. But I don't have the temperment for it. I don't generally like dealing with the human species. I am somewhat of a recluse and would rather spend the evening writing/reading than ANYTHING else at all. I have one or two close friends whom I never see, and one of them I've never even met. I don't show my emotions easily, practically never. Have even been called heartless on numerous occasions. lol Though I do sometimes get into fairly deep depressing moods and it takes awhile for me to get out. I don't like large groups of people and if I find myself in one, and run quickly to a quiet corner and think about...well, usually something to write. hehe I guess those are more Holmesian traits, but at the same time, I couldn't solve a case to save my life because I'm INCREDIBLY scatter-brained and can never stick to one subject. I'm only observant when wearing my deerstalker, and can't pay attention to anything other than a good movie or book for more than two minutes flat. lol Though I love to get into historical and theological debates and do so quite often. I love deep discussions and am known as being very intimidating when in the midst of an arguement. I'm VERY outspoken on subjects which I feel strongly upon, and have been known to challenge the doctrine of a pastor during a church service. (Yes, I know I should've waited until later:) I talk ninety miles an hour and am quite a physical klutz. I have tried playing the piano, guitar, and recorder and recently bought myself a violin to give that a whirl. I am none too good at any, thus far. Though I can sing ok....if you like lounge type music. :) So...sheesh....what does all that nonsense make me other than a disturbed, schizophrenic lunatic?? LOL I guess I might be more a Holmes type...I dunno, but my fingers hurt now from all that typing. :) | #8 Mar 19th 2008, 11:32am

Monty TwainThat's what i have callouses for! [I play guitar and piano, and now the tips in my fingers are rock solid and cannot feel. Awesome.]I feel for you on clumsiness. I walk like I'm about to run everywhere [Holmes], and generally just when i think I'm doing rather well as I walk through a busy crowd, I'll bump into someone and yell my apologies behind me. Of course, by that point my victim has already wished death upon me. I sputter [one of my favourite words], which means I stutter in a sort of hurried way. I will talk very very fast when I'm bouncing ideas off my long-suffering friends [Holmes again], which I do all the time. Even when I didn't write, I always had ideas for sketches and stories and daydreams [ever watched scrubs? I literally do what JD does when he daydreams. Then I generally tell a friend of mine and they laugh at me.] and even pictures. I draw [which I can actually imagine Holmes doing, strangely]. I love to travel [Holmes]. But I am a soppy git, too- and this tend to shine through my stubbornness, which is very Watson. Though, at the end of the day, I am sat in my dressing gown wearing a Trilby hat, listening to Glenn Miller. I'm just weird. | #9 Mar 19th 2008, 11:51am

VHunter07My gracious that is confusing! lol Would you believe I've been ardently searching for a grey dressing grown for over a YEAR now!?!? I just can't seem to find the right thing. They all look so....modern. Ugh. :)hehe I like your 'yelling apologies'. I bump into people as well but most of my klutziness is knocking things off, spilling liquids, ripping, tearing obliterating and any other destruction you can think up. When I was younger I didn't own not a single pair of jeans that didn't have at least ONE rip from my jumping fences. A great pastime fence jumping. I love it. I also LOVE to travel! Don't get to do it much, but I love it dearly. I'm pretty active as well, as in basketball, horseback riding, sharpshooting, etc. Rather an odd assortment, I suppose. lol And my music likes are probably my strangest quirk. I ADORE Michael Crawford, I'll listen to ANYTHING by him. Even though I abhor sappy love songs, if Michael sings it, I love it. And I LOVE TobyMac! You might not have heard of him, he's a rapper. I also love Evanescence and various types of 'screaming music'. And Handel is my favourite composer. rlol A diverse collection to be sure...I should start a musical library. But maybe it's all the weirdness that makes us more like Holmes, you know? Cause Watson was awesome, but he wasn't strange...like...you-know-who. :) | #10 Mar 19th 2008, 12:09pm

Monty TwainI'm going to shamelessly advertise a Holmes fanvid link here- but it's not mine:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgJ9juE2SCY To answer any questions about the lyrics to the song on this video, no, not all their songs are about gay soldiers. Though it's a friendship vid, so KSC can go on it. If you like the music in that, go and find a Decemberists album, right now. I have them all, and each is great. They write music that I think is what a Victorian sailor would have written had he access to a keyboard, an electric guitar and base, and a rather strange [yet haunting] voice. the lyrics are full of Victorian slang and jokes and I have to use a dictionary when i concentrate on the lyrics- they are frightfully intelligent. My friend Moriarty [as I have called her- in real life and to protect her identity] introduced me to them about a year ago, they are fantastic. Spread the word if you like them. | #11 Mar 19th 2008, 1:02pm

VHunter07Oh wow, I'll have to check them out. And yes! I love that vid too! I have that one downloaded. Yet I must admit that I've never read the lyrics until now. They are rather...odd. heheAnd though I stand with KCS on the matter of slash and for the same reason that I'm a Christian and it goes directly against the Bible, I will, by all means, watch slash fan vids for Holmes and Watson that use the Granada series, because often the videos are quite good. And it's not like they can make anything look different than it does in the shows. :) This ones' one of my favs...I love Sarah Brightman, anyway. :) http://youtube.com/watch?v=pZxA0V-Qplc | #12 Mar 19th 2008, 1:14pm

KaizokuShojoI am totally a Holmes.I do not like to make friends--if anyone tries to make friends with me, I will probably use my sharp tongue and tell them I'm not interested. I actually HAVE no friends...XD I have no desire for a boyfriend. I love--nay, adore--music...especially the violin. I am analytical to the point where it drives everyone around me insane. I'm always pointing things out to people. I have great deal of patience for something I want to do, but for something someone else wants me to do or people with lesser inteligence, my patience sometimes fails. If I have something to do, I loathe the idea of sleep, and I don't really like eating when I'm trying to focus on something. I get extremely irritable and, as an excellent way of putting it, my spirit chafes at inaction. I am very pale, with dark hair (yay for not going out in the sun! Even though I CAN tan!). I don't always understand other's emotions, though I can read them fine. I fall into reveries easily, and sometimes if left with nothing to do for an extended period of time, I will get depressed and lie around. I find dressing-gowns to be immensely comfortable--I am wearing my favourite blue one right now. I can go on and on. XDD Oh, and VHunter07, I know who TobyMac is! xD I'm not much of a fan of his, really, but my sister is. :3 | #13 Mar 19th 2008, 1:41pm

Monty TwainI don't have a grey one, Hell, I'm looking. The anti-slash thing is something I respect, though I don't entirely follow with the Bible-loving Christian bit- and yet i cannot be bothered to ruin a fairly nice forum by taking my own views from the Bible and trying to argue Sodomy with someone who probably knows it a lot better [believe me, i would bring about war because I fight for what I believe in] than me. I'm going to check out the video tonight, because right now I'm meant to be putting a shirt on for school, instead of lounging in my dressing gown. At least I don't have to do it tomorrow, though. | #14 Mar 20th 2008, 12:45am

KaizokuShojoI like the outdoors well enough, but I have a LOT of allergies. And I've remembered another point... I'm an artist. xD I will draw for money, but I don't charge much, and will ONLY take on commissions that are interesting--and often will do them just for fun (especially for people on the internet who can't pay me......or I'll do an art trade with them...xD). Art for art's sake and whatever. Grey dressing-gowns are impossible to find. 8o | #20 Mar 20th 2008, 2:24pm

leaving nowWell, I am Watson. I have a couple of Holmes traits, like being more of a loner, but I have more traits as Watson. I am socialable.. Don't call me patient... don't deduce that well. Observant, but not that observant. Well, and that list goes on. | #22 Mar 28th 2008, 11:52am

Protector of the Gray FortressI'm a Watson, I usually act before I observe and though I can be clever It comes in little flashes of insight rather than a process of observation and deduction. Some people say that I am too tender hearted, have a ridiuclously strict sense of personal honor and justice, and am idealistic to the point of naievete. I'm never in the fore like Holmes but I am always just behind the leader, offering my support. I am also rather gulliable about some things and think the best of people. My stories are all what Holmes would describe as 'romantic drivel'. Most of all I have a fierce sense of loyalty and would jump headlong into any fray for a friend I trusted. | #24 Mar 29th 2008, 9:35pm

semi-anarchistI reckon I'm probably more of a Holmes but I'm kind of Watsonish too. I' m smart (even though I actually hate saying so), I don't have any really close friend, I hang with people whose (is that even a word?) company I enjoy and that's it. I really like music, mostly punk, rock and alternative. I'm in love with young Johnny Rotten, by the way. I'm also very moody and go from happy to totally annoyed to sad in ten minutes. I do weird things sometimes, like staring at candles for fifteen minutes or licking a chair to find out how it tastes. I show emotion a lot, though, and I toatlly get the most insane un-fact-based ideas. I sometimes get annoyed with people who're stupid but mostly with smartish people who think they're geniuses. Uh, yeah I guess that's it. | #29 Mar 31st 2008, 6:21am

BlackWolfHowlingThis forum has gotten a little off topic, but I'm gonna respond to it anyways. I inittially thought I was a Watson, then I saw that their were some Holmes qualeties in me. It took that for me to realize that Holmes and Watson are character extreemes. I'm fairly confident when I say that we all have some of Holmes, some of Watson, and heck, even some of Moriary in us. Unless of course, people on this forums are in fact, character extreems. Then this never-ending post can be ignored. | #36 Mar 31st 2008, 2:49pm

KaizokuShojoMost forums get a little off topic every now and then. :3 You're pretty much right--most people aren't character extremes. I can't say I'm ENTIRELY like Holmes. I'm more inclined to the idea of marriage than he is, probably. I'm still probably not going to get married, and quite possibly not even ever date--It would probably take a miracle. xDD But I'm still more inclined to it than Holmes is, I daresay. ....Does that make me sound weird? 83 And I think I laugh at more than he does, though I find his sense of humour excellent. xD | #37 Mar 31st 2008, 3:19pm

KCSNo, you're not weird, I'm the same way. Although I have dated and was nearly engaged last January when we broke up, it might take a miracle to start dating again...I'm too much of a loner to make instant friends. And I too laugh more than Holmes does. But the rest of me is pretty much Holmes. | #38 Mar 31st 2008, 3:25pm

bcbdrumshi there. i don't know what i am because i have so many of both their traits. first and foremost i'm a music fanatic, so that's a point for holmes. my mind is always working as is evidenced by my critical reviews. another point for holmes. hmm...like pgf, i'm intensely loyal to the point where it confuses people. that one's for watson. i have an overactive imagination. watson again... as to being an introvert or an extrovert, it depends on the day and my mood. maybe some of you who've talked to me a bit know which i'm most like, hm? | #40 Apr 01st 2008, 12:05am

Monty TwainWell, some of my work's done... Monty Twain- His limits 1.Knowledge of Literature.-- Specialised. Knows a lot about the Sherlock Holmes stories, Rudyard Kipling, Hemmingway, PG Wodehouse, but hates most other classical fiction. Good on humourous modern fiction, " 2." Philosophy.--Plato, Socrates and others are favourites" 3. " Astronomy.--Vast. Can tell you the constellations from most places, but can name most stars in the sky nearer home. Knows the science of the tides, knows the dates of meteor showers, owns a huge telescope- 6" aperture by 1m length. Employs friend and family to help him haul it about on clear nights. " 4." " Politics.--Good. can hold an argument about British and American politics. Liberal. " 5. " " Botany.--Variable. Well up in various kinds of moss and knows quite a few latin name of plants. Knows nothing of practical gardening. Every plant that comes into his room dies. 6. Knowledge of Geology.--Limited. Knows local stones and can tell some precious stones and gems apart quite easily. 7. Knowledge of Chemistry.--Good, but not detailed. Has an A* in GCSE chemistry. 8."" Anatomy.--Accurate, but non-specific- knows the history of medicine from the Greeks to the present. 9." " Sensational Literature.-- Rarely watches the news, but listens to radio and reads a paper on occasion. Takes little interest in current affairs. Takes note of murders and his opinions, to see whether his theories are correct a few years later. 10." " History-- specialised. Knows a lot, but learns what he can of everywhere. can tell the dates of buildings and churches quickly. Enthusiastic on Victorian times and the Greeks. 11. Writes constantly. Wishes to be an author. 12. Plays the guitar well, can play any intro to a song on piano but knows very few songs all the way through. Never had lessons in piano- taught himself. 13. Professional apathetic. | #49 Apr 01st 2008, 11:48am . Edited Apr 01st 2008, 1:26pm

KCSVery well, I'll bite too. KCS (heh - thought you were going to get my name, didn't you?) - Her Limits. Knowledge of Literature.-- Varied. Knows the Doyle Canon better than is healthy. Bit of Jules Verne, Erle Stanley Gardner, the Bible, and anything mystery-related. Philosophy.-- not really interested. Astronomy.-- Rather sickened on it at the moment, since Dad has been taking it up as a massive hobby. Politics.-- Conservative. Study American enough to discuss intelligently. Not really thrilled about any of the Presidential candidates at the moment, conservative or otherwise. Botany.-- Enough to keep a garden alive but really could care less. Too much enforced weeding and tending - if Mom didn't make me work it the thing would die because I really don't care. Knowledge of Geology.-- Can identify basic gems and stones, knows nothing of mud splashes nor does she care in the least. Knowledge of Chemistry.-- Can identify periodic table element abbreviations and that is the limit. Knows not to mix baking soda and vinegar. Anatomy.-- Accurate - got an A+ in Biology. Sensational Literature.-- Basic news stories of the time, reading basically for interest and story ideas, don't really care if theories are right or not. History-- Fairly good. Minored in history at college until decided three semesters of History of Civilisation was simply too much. Well up on WWII and English history especially. Also writes constantly. Will be an author someday - has had a few minor articles accepted to periodicals and gotten honorable mention in a few poetry contests. Plays the piano well, have been for fifteen years. Tried the violin for three years and gave up in disgrace. Obviously has too much time on her hands at the moment to bore people like that... | #50 Apr 01st 2008, 12:44pm
