So, I have a little question, which may seem really trivial, but it's been bugging me.

I've got a story running around in my head which I always imagine being in the FR setting (like, it's mostly set in Menzoberranzan), but it has NOTHING to do with any existing characters. Really famous ones might be mentioned if it comes up, or whatever Matron Mothers from whatever houses, but other that, it's all OCs.

What I'm wondering is, does that technically count as fanfiction? I don't want to call it original fiction because it's set in FR and that's all copyrighted and etc, but at the same time, I'm not sure if it should be fanfiction since it's not about previously existing characters.

Thoughts?

I think it would still be fanfiction, simply because you do not work for WotC. If you were using original characters and you worked for them, it would be cannon, but as you don't and are using the world, it is fanfiction.
