PynkPlayarTopic: What's the appeal of clumsy girls?
I'm sorry, but I can't help but notice the excessive number of female fiction characters in the media world that are clumsy. Like Sakuno, for example. I mean, it's normal for people to trip and bump their toe or whatever on the occasion, but sometimes in fanfictions its like overdone and Sakuno can't even walk without collapsing. And I could probably name a bunch of other female characters in other mangas/books. I feel like the whole clumsy thing is sort of Mary-Sue. Like, it's supposedly a flaw, but not enough to make the character realistic. Is it suppose to be cute? Like the girl falls down and everyone gets a panties shot or the guy goes diving to catch her? I dunno...what do you guys think? O.o |

CinpiiHey, interesting topic. I think the reason why clumsy female characters is so popular in Japan is because it's 'moe' (wiki it if you don't know the term). Lots of guys are suckers for the helpless girls. It makes them more appealing/cuter, because then the guy can feel more masculine in relation, I guess. Bad guess maybe, but the Japanese are also obsessed with cuteness, and I'm sure to them, clumsiness is rather cute. Now when they make a character beyond clumsy, it's probably to draw laughs. I agree that Sakuno is clumsy, but mostly on the court. She's not as bad as say, Serena/Usagi from Sailor Moon. Now that's over the top. Sakuno is graceful in comparison, lol. I'd be interested to read other people's thoughts on this topic. =) |

SelbeFirst time I've seen a topic like this. Well, I agree for the most part with Cinpii. I think it's adorable to see a clumsy girl fall into the arms of a strong boy (RyoSaku! I would die of excitement if I ever saw that) especially when it's anime style. Humor is a big part of it also. Especially in the Prince of Tennis anime. They make it seem like Sakuno is impaired in a physical sense. It's ridiculous, yet funny. In the manga, she wouldn't be considered clumsy as much as timid. I guess it's just nice to see such polar opposites together. It gives me a good blush and a giggle. |

beriathThere was a period when femmes fatales over existed in the anime world – Cowboy Bebop, Cat's Eyes, Lupin the III, Devil May Cry. Apparently the plots are intended for mature audiences and these ladies have voluptuous body and fire you with a gun (not meant to be ** off!). I don't have intense objection against clumsy fictional characters, as long as such traits do cleverly contribute to the story. Yet I'm getting fed up of cliche settings like the incapability to clean up a room, blowing the house with the micro oven, destroying the kitchen, lack of basic common sense, impossible lack of sense of navigation. Moe? Just not my cup of tea. | #4 Sep 21st, 6:11am . Edited Sep 21st, 6:14am | |
