Topic: Sakuno in the manga
Hello, I had never read the PoT manga, so my image of Sakuno is a shy girl always following Ryoma around. But I heard that in the manga, she's a total different girl, and have potential being a regular in seigaku's girl tennis team.

The anime and the manga version of Sakuno are like two different people! I had never read the manga, I don't think I ever will. So can anyone describe the sakuno in the manga for me? How's she's like, or what's the diffrence between the manga and the anime....!

Thanks!

Well, there's a comparison for her character in her article in Wikipedia, so I suggest you check it out. But for your information, Sakuno gets very little appearances in the manga, and the ones where she makes an appearance in are always scenes with Ryoma. She's basically not a ditz. Instead of running around and following Ryoma like a shy fangirl, she's more thoughtful and mature.

Ahh, it's kinda hard to say since you haven't read the manga, but I hope you get it.^^;

Yah, in the manga, I don't think Sakuno ever had any of those scenes that showed her clumsiness like in the anime. But instead of that, you get scenes of Sakuno going to tennis practice and looking like she's going her best; scenes of Sakuno being very thoughtful and considerate; Sakuno seeming very mature in certain incidents (referring to genius 306)... yeah, I think you could try going to the following:

http://www.cinpii.com/ryosaku/sections/honyaku.html

Scrolling down to read the two chapter translations where Sakuno's character is shown (kind of), those two geniuses are some of her most major appearances. ^___^

Um...I'm not sure about it...I just saw it in Youtube. I'll tell you the title when I have time to look for it.

Naw, that's not true. What you saw on youtube was probably some scans taken from doujinshi. I've seen people ask about that on YT too... the art style wasn't Konomi-sensei's. ^__^

Well, keikeiaznqueen explained her better than I can.^^;

On the subject of them kissing, I don't really know, since I've never been in Youtube before, but I don't believe they will. One thing I like about PoT is that Konomi-sensei keeps the storyline as is. No sappy love scenes, no, er, "suggestive" scenes, (some violence though), and nothing insulting and/or dark in any way. I seriously doubt he will ever get those two kissing. Ah, I do love the manga... ^-^ Well, got to get back to the Nationals arc!

Sakuno's skill in tennis in the anime is a running gag. She can't even return a decent ball. She's portrayed as a shy and ditzy fan girl who is prone to emotional breakdowns. But the anime version of Sakuno is indeed funny and adorable. She makes a lot of appearance in the anime than in the manga, and has shown moments with Ryoma.

It is apparent that she has a crush on Ryoma in both version. However, Sakuno is much more mature in the manga. It's disappointing that she makes little appearance in the manga. The fact that she is a better player and potential regular is what makes her interesting in the manga. I wished the anime version made her a little better at tennis.

hmmm...

i have no idea why you guys like sakuno. well, lemme guess....

first - you people are 14 years and below?

second - PoT is the first anime or one of the first 5 anime you ever watch?

third - you're a shojo maniac?

fourth - you guys are just pansies - no offense but yeah, that's just it.

no, don't get me wrong. i'm not biased or whatever. i do like het pairing. but i really really despise sakuno. wanna know why?

first - sakuno is a very common character in any mangas and animes. weak, stupid, airheaded, shy, kind, lack of self confidence and cute. no adventure there. BORING!

second - she's annoying. she does not contribute anything to the seigaku boys (she can't cook, she can't show directions, she's stupid, she only depends on ryoma or her friend tomoka for everything) and yet she got plenty of airtime in the anime. in my opinion, konomi sensei tried to attract male audience by introducing that stupid feudal character, but unfortunately his attempt did not succeed. sakuno is just another annoying character in the end.

third - she's the cliche weak female character, in which she is very dependant and cannot think of herself. she's can't even be a good supporting character! 200 years ago, she might be a goddess, but in this modern world, she's a drag, and i'm ashamed that they potrayed female as that.

fourth, - that 'ryoma, your eyes are bleeding' scene, it's the worst thing a girl (esp. a mere fan watching at the sidelines) could do - much less as the coach granddaughter. she drag the players motivation down, brought shame to her granma (even if her granma is the coach, it does not permit her to go prancing around the court. and besides, it shows that her granma does not fit to be a coach when she can't even teach her granddaughter tennis rules and ethics), and also, soiled seigaku's name (seigaku let their fans on the court - it's rude and impolite to the players and tournament).

and fifth - i lost count on how much "uhhh", "unn", and "ryoma~" in her script. not interesting - at all.

i like Ann much better than sakuno. hell, at least tomoka is better - aside from her annoying ryoma sama! i'm not bashing you guys, just don't understand why you guys like the sakuno's character.

I read the manga, so i'll stand up for Sakuno to say that well, she wasn't that much of an ornament in the whole series. In the manga anyways. She actually can and did cook in genius 306 for the Seigaku team (if anyone is interested). So Shourin, or anyone for the matter, who watched the anime and feel that way, I feel that you should try the manga. If the anime is really portraying her as such, then I guess its not doing her justice.

Sakuno appears mostly in the manga with Ryoma too, but she hardly appear at all, hinting that she does have a life besides following him all around.

Yeap, so I hope you could read the manga a bit and clear up the things about Sakuno. Its not the first time an anime differed from the manga after all :)

An extra note: I'm none of those above mentioned in your generalisation.

Well, I'll agree with you that sakuno in the anime is kind of...more girly than necessary.

But I will disagree with you on some points:

first, Konomi-sensei isn't exactly the one that makes the anime. While he actually made the real storyline, the anime is just based on the story. Its like J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter, and Stephanie Meyer and Twilight. Most animes are liked that. Also, the manga is really, the authentic story, so you can't really base characters and events on the anime, since there are fillers and there are different interpretations of a character or a situation in the anime and in the manga. Really, all an anime is for is to make a manga or a "franchise" easier to see. Most animes that are based on mangas only follow the main events, and whats the most important. Becuase it takes money to run stuff like that, they cut off scenes and make some supporting characters different so they can better fit the storyline.

Also, the reason why she was actually portrayed as such a "weak" person in the anime is to attract girls. Girls wouldn't regularly read stuff with tennis and guys and sweating would they? So, to make more money, the directors and producers probably changed Sakuno's personality a bit to make her fit better with Ryoma in the anime. After, would a mature, young girl that is actually pretty strong-willed fit well with the overly cocky Ryoma? I'm a shojo maniac and I don't think so. It would be too awkward.

In the manga, I find her to be very independent and somebody that is well liked, and is pretty good at tennis. I think it's just the anime that portrays her as dependent. And while we don't really see her actually playing tennis a lot in the manga, she seems pretty good. And I think the only reason why Sakuno sucks at tennis in the anime is because, again for the girls. Girls can't really relate to a girl who tries her best in a sport and doesn't really chase after the guy she like right? Well most girls I think.

And while it's against the rules to walk into a tennis court during a match, I don't think a sane person would actually leave a person bleeding from their eye. I've played/seen/been in school tennis matches, and even if someone gets hit by a tennis ball, if the coach is watching, most coaches will call time to ask if the player is alright. Also, most opponents don't just go hitting balls when an opponent is injured. It's bad sportsmanship, and you feel really guilty afterwards (I know, I think I've hit at least twenty people at games.) and bleeding isn't something that happens often in tennis games. It's a raquet, and a ball with felt on it. The worst you can get is a bruise.

Also, I don't think people should really trust prince of tennis rules. I've tried and attempted to read the rules and guidelines of tennis, (ITS SO LONG I THOUGHT I WAS DYING) but i didn't really see where going on the court during a match illegal. It's disrespectful, but what a fan does, is what a fan does. It's merely called off as an interference and they do the point over usually. And again, Sakuno didn't even go to see Ryoma after he got injured she stayed by the sidelines like a mature adult. (maybe not an adult, but a mature kid) And so, again it's the anime trying to make another Ryosaku moment that shouldn't really be there.

And if you want you can go and look at the chapter yourself. It's chapter 38 in PoT.

So, I think, that maybe that the anime and the manga are a little different. I like the manga Sakuno better, because she doesn't exactly follow Ryoma around all the time, and she really works hard in tennis, because half the time she's wearing her tennis skirt and shirt.

Also, I mean absolutely no offense when I say this, but people can have their own opinions about things so they shouldn't be criticized about it. Can I ask what's wrong with being younger than 14 years of age? Is there anything wrong with being new to anime or PoT? Is there anything wrong for liking shojo stories? And if the people here are, as you say, younger than 14, won't we be offended if you call us pansies? Would you call a brother or sister or a younger cousin or friend a pansy because she (or he) liked it? So while I think it's fine for you to share your opinion with us "pansies" could you do it while not offending us? Some people are and will always be very sensitive. Also, before you make accusations as to why we like Sakuno, maybe get the facts straight? Perhaps I'm being a hypocrite for making accusations of my own, but this is something that I actually like. It's something that I enjoy. And some people here like it too. I mean after all, would you like it if I made a list of why I didn't like An or Tomoka? (Well, I like An, she's one of my favorite characters, and I don't really mind Tomoka, since I can only really hear her voice in the anime) but would you?

And really, if you say you're not biased it just makes you sound more biased. Also, most guys I know actually like Sakuno's type these days. At least in America. So her anime personality isn't something you should criticize so much.

First-you're hurting some us as a whole, and while some of us in the forum may not mind, there are some, like me, that may, so please, could you maybe be more respectful to those who aren't like you in the future?

Second-You're not only criticizing us, but the people that made the anime you watched. If you like PoT, the anime, then really, you're just telling off the people that made PoT for you to enjoy.

Third-You can't just label Sakuno as a "common character" in manga and anime. While its true that there are many characters like her in different series, she, as a character, is an individual. It's the same as labeling people as white, black, Asian, Latino, etc. and labeling homosexual people and heterosexual people. You call her weak, stupid, airheaded, shy, kind, and lacking self confidence but please, where in the actually anime is she like that? Please, feel free to give me evidence. I'm someone who can't let anybody that insults me get away (I know its a really bad trait of mine, but sometimes on youtube, it's really fun telling people off) so I would actually thoroughly watch it. (After all, it's PoT) The adjectives you have to describe her are probably the way you interpret it, not the same as some other people, like me, interpret it. Also, please don't call her boring. Or lacking of adventure.

Fourth-I know that you are probably a feminist, looking at how you said that you were ashamed of Sakuno, but really, in the real world, aren't there people like that? Most characters have personalities that match people in the real world. If you met a person like that, would you really push them into the road for being who they are?

Fifth-Konomi-sensei was probably not trying to attract the male audience with Sakuno, but rather the female audience like with the anime, but in a different approach. Most of the Ryosaku 3 moments in the anime didn't happen in the manga (at least in my memory) and most of the few Ryosaku moments in the manga weren't really elaborated in the anime because the creators of the anime altered Sakuno's character too much.

Now: I'm going to be a hypocrite and start bashing you, shourin, even if you don't read this.

If you hate sakuno so much in the first place, why the hell are you even looking at a Ryosaku forum? Last time I checked it was a Ryosaku and nonyaoi forum. Why are you snooping around here? To bash people? Well why the hell are you doing that if you mean "no offense" and "aren't biased" huh? IF you're such an-anti-fan, why don't you just frekin say that you don't like sakuno and leave without leaving your stupid criticisms and reasons why you don't like her. Don't call her annoying or stupid or a bad cook because you've never even tasted her cooking and you've never actually met her right? after all she only a character. But if she's only a character why am I defending her so much? Because obviously it her my feelings. And why did I even read it and just not ignore it? I like to usually give my feedback on whatever I can in forums, so I'm doing so. I'm also trying to defend some other people even if they like it or not. Also, if you detest Sakuno so much why the hell are you spending time counting her "Ryoma"s anyway? What a waste of time. Even I don't do that and I'm a hardcore fan of Ryosaku. And before you criticize about her or her grandmother, have you ever actually played in a tournament before? A tennis tournament? If you have I'll get off your back on this topic, but really when I'm on the court and I'm bleeding, no matter how btchy I am, I would probably want someone to come onto the court and help me. It's so intimitading and humiliating to be on the court without someone coming to my aide when I'm bleeding that I would actually start crying. And I dont' cry easily. And what is this "modern world" you talk of? Is this the "modern world?" Back in the 1490s when Columbus came to America, he thought he was "modern" but now that's ancient no? And in this modern world, most guys hate girls like me who speak their mind for whatever and like girls like Sakuno who are quiet and nice and cute and that would make lunches for them. That taste good, according to the manga, which is actually the real story. So before you actually start bashing us, why don't you read what some of us have read, and then come and judge us, huh?

Back to the regular, no nonsense mode:

Anyway, if anyone actually read this whole thing about me bantering about how Sakuno is awesome in manga and different in the anime...Well it still appliees to the main topic right? And I feel bad for writing so much; if I start typing, I keep on typing until my thought is over.

So shourin, please (if you read it) read the manga. I would even reread it over and pick out the chapters that actually have her for you for easy access. But I think I'm blowing this thing out of porportion.

So I apologize again, but I've written too much for me to erase, and it's a forum anyway. And I apologize for criticizing anyone and I apologize for taking up too much space and I apologize for being such a weirdo. I just need people to hear my case, that's all.(and I didn't get to eat dinner, so I'm cranky)

Yeah, in the manga she's very thoughtful and mature. She's shy, but she doesn't stutter. Ryoma and Sakuno met the same way. After the first five volumes, you can't expect to see her for another three or four (exaggerating, but seriously, you never see her). She also does have a chance of becoming a regular in the manga.

Wow. I need to keep an eye on this forum more. Call me silly, but I didn't expect to read an anti-Sakuno post here (namely because I don't see why an anti-fan would even bother). But I love reading a little controversy; I love how it sparks debate and more posts. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and as long as it doesn't get ugly, I'm fine with it. These posts aren't ugly. (If you want ugly, go to the GW fandom and read up on all the vitriol against Relena).

Epikisland: while I didn't agree with everything you wrote, I still think you totally rock. Thanks for posting in this forum! =D

Thanks. And yeah, I have to agree with you. I did go a little overboard, so now I don't even agree with myself. I should really keep from posting unnecessary stuff.
