Topic: Why do you review a fic?
Every writer posts here in ff.n to have their works read, that goes w/o saying (if the author honestly didn’t care, they wouldn’t bother to post here).

But another reason is the potential for feedback. For some writers, feedback is very important and possibly the best reward for their efforts. With that in mind,

What makes you review a story?

What makes you absolutely not review one?

Is there anything a writer can do to make you more inclined to review?

***

If it’s a really good POT fic, and I mean, really good, I will review. Doesn’t matter when I read it, if it was good, I will mentally tag it in my mind and review it later. I like having that history in my ff.n account. Maybe I’m weird. *lol* But if I come across an awesome POT fic, the urge to review is strong, because I want to do everything I can to encourage that writer to write more, and thus, feed my addition. ^o^

If it's not a super awesome fic, then it really has to do with three factors:

- time

- story quality

- inclination

Back when I still had enough time to do so, I’d review every non-yaoi POT fic I came across. And they weren’t generic reviews either. Since I’m a writer, I know what makes a good review, and so I craft my reviews w/ care.

But since now my free time is more sparse, it really comes down to inclination and story quality. If the writing sucked, and the author showed zero effort in polishing it (checking grammar, spelling, syntax, etc), that shows disrespect to the reader. And yah, that bugs me. Those are the easiest things to fix. Stories like that don’t deserve my time. Why point out ways to improve when the author can’t even grasp the most basic of writing concepts?

The only exceptions:

- fics written by someone whose native language isn’t English (I’m pretty good at figuring those ppl out). I will cut more slack for those writers.

- fics with really innovative plots and ideas. There are some fics you just put up w/, cuz the story is that good. *lol*

As far as increasing the chances of getting a review from me, I find that I am more inclined to review fics of people I know, quality fics that are worth reviewing. So yah, chat me up, befriend me, and write a decent fic that isn’t riddled w/ mistakes. That’s not too hard, ne? *runs away*

What makes you review a story?

If the fic is up to my standards whether if it is good or not. Anything that has a good plot, and pulls me in. And of course, I want them to update like crazy just for the benefit of me. Those who aren't native to the English language. I know how much they want to improve. :D

What makes you absolutely not review one?

Too many errors. Like once, I come across a fic about YamaMimi and I couldn't read since they spelled because with "coz." Please no slang when writing. Text alignment. Or I just don't like what I've read. I'm not going to flame anyone for putting "OH MY GOSH. I hate your ficc." I'm not a type of person who would flame. And those who beg for reviews.

Is there anything a writer can do to make you more inclined to review?

Okay-good grammar. No one has to be perfect because there are those on FFN who wants to improve their writing skills, FFN, no begging when it comes to review, only writes for reviews, da da. :D

As you can tell Cinpii, I don't feel like doing my homework~!!

There are several reasons to review a story. As long as it is relatively well written, or, very badly written. If I come a across a story then bores me out, I just click away. That's when I don't review a story. But usually, when I come across something that I'm willing to read, I review every chapter.

I only find a need to review a story if need be. I'm the type of writer that doesn't like getting reviews like on ff.net. If I need someone to review something I'll ask my friends to, for I can watch their face as they read and hear a genuine response.

When I review a story, I review it because either the chapters they won't have to asked (then I feel guilty for not giving praise) or someone that doesn't have any reviews but really deserve one.

I don't flame others and I don't intend to either. In my opinion, if the story is bad or the grammer is bad, I will not read the story at all. Of course that won't give anyone reviews.

I'll admit: I do a little jump of happiness when I see a review waiting for me in my inbox. ^^;; I'm one of those people. It makes me jump a little (ok, about two feet) higher to see a review with more than one sentence. ^^;;; I can understand Night Foliage-san's dislike for FF.N reviews though since personal opinions are always best. And while the reviews are always, always appreciated, you wonder if your story is really just "Cute" when you get the same word five or six times in a row. ^^;;;;

On the topic at hand, I'll be brutally honest. More often than not, a story might or might not get a review from me, depending on if I've logged in. I just don't like leaving reviews with my name in black and the bracket-too-lazy-to-sign-in-close-bracket. I used to do that until recently. -__-;; I owe some stories reviews indefinitely.

But if it is a really good story, one with a unique plot, a concept I've never thought of before, a sheer wonderful one that makes me think, or made me laugh my head off, I'll log in _just_ to review. I pay more attention to the storyline and plot, or the theme, rather than the technical aspects of writing.

Ironically, one of the things that makes me _not_ review a story is a request _to_ review the story. Unless I really like it, it's one of the things that makes me move on in the first place. It may have cost me some good stories perhaps but I learned that "R&R plz" (what I used to do about four years ago sadly -_-) is not really needed. Perhaps it's the idea that if your story is good, it can stand on it's own, people will read it and if you're lucky, review. They don't need (and most likely, cannot) be told or ordered or begged to leave a note. *shrug* At least, that's what I think.

I agree with you at the last part of your paragraph YunCyn. Though, I'll admit this much (back in like 6th grade), I used to be one of those who would review every fic (of what I read). And looking back at my review history, I feel stupid. Haha, all my sentences are like "OMGGGGGGGGG. LOLZZZZ."

Man, I'm such a dork. ToT

Hmmm.. let's see... there are lots of reason i don't and do review a fic :P

I review a fic, when it's a very good one, which makes me squel, laugh, cry, guilty *i always felt guilty if the character of the fic felt guilty xD*, touched and other emotion, except bored and sleepy. :D hehe...

Especially, if it's a long fic, good written, fun and interesting to read, i love it. i would do anything to review it ^-^

But not always good fics i reviewed, i also review fics when it's not well written, but IF the author said to point their mistakes *i really love those type of authors, they really want to write their fics better ^-^* Even tough i'm not a good writer, but i'm a good reader, so i just gave my opinion 'honestly' xD

Oh.. i also would review the fic, with the pairings i like . *haha.. :D*

And fics that i wouldn't review are...

the ones which begs for review, well i reviewed some fics but if they are good.

there are also some author who said that he or she wouldn't continue their fic if there are no reviewers or it doesn't reach the number they wanted. Come on, if the author is really willing to write the story, they would just write it. If they say such as that thing, *blah* i don't really like that kind of author.

Hmm.. like undying melody, i also don't like a fic, where there is "slang" words, it's okay for a conversation but not that much. I just can't see a japanesse character talk like that. Most asian, speak english in a more formal way *i think :P as i'm an asian and i used to speak formally x)*

Oh.. one type story, that i can't get to read or review even tough i want to *out of topic ne xP* is an american OC -.-, it's like when a bunch of girls from america transferred to the school and gets really close to the regulars. *bang* i nearly hit my head several time on the wall. it's okay for an oc, but from japan, not a group of girls suddenly transferred and makes all the regulars life changed in a moment... maybe one person at a time it's good.

Anyway, no offense to all spesific author, these are my trully and honest confession xD i need to get them out of my head before i blame an author *i don't know who will be my target ;p*

And i'm sorry if some of my list makes you feel bad... i'm sorry!!!!

'Sunmason...' '...' ' I mean sumimasen' '-.-;' (nyahaa... i get that from tenimyu.. which makes me laugh my head off xD)

I feel a bit silly. I review everything I read. I'm a bit of a newbie to FF.net but I've read a good couple hundred or so of stories on here. I know how good reviews make me feel, so I tend to place a review on any story that I enjoyed; which is a lot because I'm just like that. I will usually only give shorter reviews to the more standard stories, but on things that I find outstanding I will usually write a paragraph of critiques and praise. I also review stories that I disliked because of plot holes, Mary Sues, OOCness, ect. with a long review. I do not flame, but I do give critical overviews and explain to the author why I disliked it so perhaps they can fix the problems. Or they could just ignore me I suppose.

I don't review if I think the story is beyond repair and I couldn't get past the first chapter. I also don't review if I don't think I'll really care to read the next chapter. I'm not as critical, I guess, on what the author wants becuase sometimes I skip over the author's notes anyway. What does really get me is the grammar thing. When I see that I immediately want to review and tell them that it's wrong. Not in a mean way, but just to point it out.

What an author could do to make me want to review is to have an absolutely outstanding fic. Something that makes me bounce in my chair and want to read the next chapter. It could be any fic that's well-written and you've got me hooked!

Well, just thought I put up here a bit of a different opinion.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with reviewing everything you read, Silver-san. Indeed, those kinds of reviews are what makes every writer happy. Substantial reviews with polite concrit is what we all look for. (Or rather, that's what the review system is there for in the first place ^^;; ).

It's all just a matter of different discernments and tastes, I suppose. That and individual degrees of laziness (which I will be the first to admit I have a very high degree of. =__=;;;).

Yup. Silver-san, you're not silly! I also review everything that keeps me reading. As long as it's not too unbearable. I review fics that need improvement, ones that are written by people who are very new to the fandom and don't know the names of the people properly. I usually give critiques together with comments, unless the fic is too good that I'm shivering.

Even those who aren't going to improve very much, as long as they sound like they've put a lot of effort into their fic scores reviews.

Okay, actually, I review everything that I decide to click into. If the fic is bad, I review and say it's bad. -_-

Even in a recent ryosaku fic that I found, the author put it down right in the summary that the story is pointless, I read and reviewed it anyway.

I'm probably even more silly. -_- I pity fics that have no reviews, so I click in and review it.

I feel really good when I get reviews, so I assume others appreciate it, too, so I make it a point to review every story I read. Oh... gomen, Cinpii-san! I haven't been able to review your stories (I've read practically ALL of them) because of some error or something! Gomen! I really TRIED! Oh... keikeiaznqueen... I think reviewing fics that are 'pointless' and such isn't silly! I do it too! You know... the karma thing! ^^ Ooookay... I'm so weird. Well, ja!

hmmm..... well. I generally review anything that can pull a decent emotional recation from me, be it laughter or tears. I also try to review anything that makes me think. For a long time I got out of the habit of reviewing, but now that I've started writing again I'm more into it. I also try to review stories where I like the idea but the writing style needs work. That's what ffn is for. ^.^ Constructive reviews can take a long time to write, but I feel that it's generally worth it. I always want people to tell me where the holes in my writing are.

If there's slang or 'I suck at summeries' in a summary I will not touch it. Excessive Author's notes annoy me (I made that mistake myself with my first fic). Anything that interrupts the story is grating. Slang and abbreviations are a no-no. Excessive misspellings or grammar errors annoy me. I hate StickyCaps (aNiMe) and excessive use of capslock. Most fics that exhibit a certain level of incompetence I won't even finish. Occassionally I'll leave a review of advice but....eh. Depends on whether I can see the potential of the story and the mood I'm in.

But these days I'm bored enough that I review pretty much everything i take the time to read, as long as it shows me something new. Originality, that's the ticket. And oneshots. I always try to review oneshots because us one-shoters really get jippe din the reviews department. Because there aren't any chapters to look forward to.

A few years ago I theorized that the biggest review getters are romance fics, then humor, then angst, then everything else. I think it's psychological. Could eb one reason for all the romance and randomness here ne?

I think that the best way an author can have to get review is cliffhangers, but mostly it will be reviews like "OMG! What happened!? Update soon!" but that's what people tend to do. Cliffies make you look forward the next chapter and readers think that if they submit a review telling to update as soon as possible, they will get another chapter "as fast as possible". It's hard to get good, concrete reviews ^^'

Q: Why do I review?

A:To help the writer to improve.

What makes me review?

Shallow it may seems, but it depends on my mood and I only review whenever i feel like it. But, whenever i review especially if I'm on a serious mood and I think the writer deserved to receive a decent review rather than those "it's really cute" "it's nice" and many other unprofessional reviews, which I also usually say myself whenever I'm too lazy and just want to appreciate the story,I placed an honest criticism, pointing out their strengths, weaknesses and flaws. Also, some writers tend to take for granted the Title of the story so I usually point that out also, the relevance of your plot to your title. Only few stories recieve this kind of review from me and they are really diferrent from one another. Honestly, I enjoyed reviewing fics with so many flaws rather than those good ones. I don't know why....

I think If you really enjoyed writing the story, no matter if you didn't get so many reviews, you will continue writing because it is your passion or you are enjoying what you are doing and not because you wanted to get so many reviews. Writing because of reviews,is I think, forgive me for saying this but the writer only wants to inflate his ego. He isn't a true writer at all. I'm telling this to those who don't update until they recieve this X amt. of review and to those other writers. Duh! they grits my nerve.

wow, my first time to join a forum!

well, i review a story if it keeps me fired up to read some more.

i agree!! it really!! really!! makes me smile when readers take time to review, so Silver-san, don't worry, you're not any bit of silly, you make Author/Authoress happy.

though i think i don't deserve some since im not that good.

and i seriously believe i need a beta-reader, anyone? xD

I review a story for one (or more) of three reasons:

1.) The fic is freakin' awesome. (This is my number one reason for reviewing, by the way. What can I say? I'm lazy.)

2.) I can see some potential.

3.) I just feel like it.

I try to include constructive criticism whenever I can, but generally, I simply voice my thoughts on the fic. I don't write stories as nearly as much as I review them, so my main source of joy comes from a nice reply to my review. :D

I don't review a fic if I'm not interested in it. Any summary that says something that goes along the lines of, "what will happen when...?" or "read to find out" is an instant turn-off. If nothing else, a fic must have a good story in order for me to review it (I'll just give pointers on the spelling and grammar conventions and, if I deem it necessary, my opinion on the writing). A very picky reviewer I am. [nods]

What makes you review a story?

I usually don't review a story, unless its really, really good and grabs my attention, or there are some grammer mistakes, spelling, etc.

What makes you absolutely not review one?

I don't really care if people beg for reviews, because, even if its a call for attention or something, I do that too, because I want to know what I can do better in my story, and usually a second opinion besides my own is best. If I absolutely don't review a fic, its usually because I forget or because the plot doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Is there anything a writer can do to make you more inclined to review?

Maybe if there is a grammer mistake or something, I would point it out and remember to review. Also if the story is very well written.
