Okay, I am now a BL writer and reader. As the icon put it I have moved on to 'the dark side'. (Dark side? Where? Where?)

I find myself enjoying it more than het now. *gets shot* Learning the difference between homosexuals and bisexuals helped me move onto a new type of pairing smoothly and I've realized that I've been looking at characters in shonen ai and yaoi fics as bisexuals. I guess most people don't have a bright and positive look on shonen ai and yaoi because we tend to just label them as homos (or in our country, we use the terms 'bading' and 'bakla' which automatically gives you a picture of a boy wearing fit clothes and make up - This makes my blood boil!! ARGH. Talk about stereotyping!)

Now, I have my answer to the question.

Why do people write yaoi? Because it's fun.

I don't think that going deeper into 'sexuality' would be needed, or saying how the female characters don't match up. The truth is, even if a series has an equal number of boys and girls, I find myself liking at least one shonen ai pair. (But still, if the series has ALL boys, then it should be OChet or yaoi) _ Mahh. Don't get me wrong. I love Sakuno a lot and I still love RyoSaku.

Of course, not all people find yaoi fun. ^o^

In the same sense, I bet most of the yaoi writers are asking, 'Why do some people hate it when we write yaoi?' :D

So that's it. I hope I made some sense @_@

*This moment somehow reminds me of Homer Simpsons' great epiphany in The Simpsons Movie... ah, nevermind.*

I am essentially a shonen-ai writer. I guess the main reason i write it is because I find it so cute!

I don't have anything against het and to be honest, I find Sakuno quite endearing. I just don't like her with Ryoma. It's too cliche. I guess I'd rather have her paired with someone a little more unexpected.

And I am a girl and I do read yuri. Not as much as BL, but I do enjoy them both...

I really think it depends on the personalities...like take the perfect pair...Tezuka just fits with Fuji. Fuji is like conquered by Tezuka in mind and tennis and Fuji really respects him in return. and to Tezuka, Fuji kinda breaks all his expectations....and beneath the silent, cool rivalry and businesslike exterior, theres a pleasant odd sense of comradery that you cant get with any other combination. Its like a joining of the two most perfect characters. I really think it would affect the relationship if Fuji was a girl though even if he did have the same personality.

As for Sakuno and Ryoma, I dont like how Sakuno does all the chasing. I prefer like a friendship type of relationship that later blooms into romance. I dont like it when characters are too obvious about their crushes. I also dont like it when girls seduce guys and act all flirty. I mean I guess it can be funny but I'll probably lose all respect for that girl. I prefer the tomboy like attitude where she doesnt suspect a thing and is so oblivious. I kinda dont like An because shes always flirting kind of and acting all coy...

Wow, people theorized a lot about these things XD. Personally I don't really care if it's het or yaoi. I just take my two favorite characters from a series and plunk them together (no, it's not THAT simple, they still have to work)... Well there are people that absolutely has to read yaoi and there are those that can't stand them, (people in here?) but it's basically just personal taste.

about having them w/o a girlfriend thing so you can be delusional about them, I'd rather have the guys turn to each other than they have anything to do with me *shudder* that's... kinda... freaky. that's what the dating sim games are for XDD

anyway, I will make my exit from this thread as I'm about to get pelted by het fans. ^^ I was just interested to see what people would say about it here.

Perfect pair is awesome... and the fact that people theorise about WHY is really... just I don't know. Is there a reason? I write (and read) because I enjoy it. It's enjoyable, it has a fell good mood. That's it.

Fuji's Girl

(This is in reply to mendibends post)

You are right about Tezuka fitting with Fuji. They're like the exact opposites of each other, two pieces of the same pie, yin and yang. But still, even if other people see it that way, there are others who are conventional and prefer sticking to girl-boy relationships. One of those people is me. If, Fuji were a girl, then I would love it, but he is a guy, a hot guy, who I happen to love!

Some people say that fangirls tend to enjoy yaoi better than girl-boy pairings because they dont want to see their precious idol being dumped into another girls arms, but not all girls feel that way.

Take me for example. I would rather see my beloved Fuji happy in the arms of another girl than see his precious male image twisted into something else when put up with male characters. But I guess that's just me, because no matter how hard I try to see it, girls just go wild over yaoi. *Sigh* I give up. I guess yaoi is the new hot thing right now.

Refering to mendibends post again,

what is so wrong about Sakuno? She's shy and gentle, and it's absolutely cute how she tries to get through to Ryoma. Sakuno Ryuuzaki shows determination, and not only that she also shows that she is willing to give the feline-eyed lad her undying support no matter what. And no she isnt pathetic. (Okay, maybe I am defending her too much, but so what? There are some who just see her as a weak girl, but no she isn't. She's actually very strong inside.)

She's perfect for him. He's cocky, strong and hot while she is well, clumsy, shy, timid and adorable.

They're like yin and yang too. Opposites attract you know. Her timid nature actually pacifies Ryoma's arrogant and impulsive one.

I think it's wrong when people say that Ryoma doesnt give a damn about her. Just think of it, he allows her to walk side by side with him and he wouldnt just let anyone do that with him. He didnt let Tomoka do that. He protects her, and though some may say its just due to obligation sake, how can it be merely obligation only when he does so most often? I think his denial about protecting her in the first episode was just to hide what he truly felt about her thanks to him.

Another is that, he always uses a softer kind of speech whenever he is with her. She is the only girl he talks to in the anime, and when he does so, his cocky exterior seems to lighten a little. Dont you notice it? Whenever Sakuno-chan talks to him he sorts of opens up? I mean, he usually avoids girls.

He also comments on her moves and her hair, something that he has never done to anyother girl. You can also see affection in the expression on his face.

I even saw a tiny bit of jealousy in his face when he called Sakuno so that they could leave Kintarou alone. He was jealous when Sakuno relished the fact that Kintarou liked her cooking. And in the scene where Sakuno-chan thanked him for rescuing her from the bear, I actually saw disappointment in his eyes when Sakuno ran away because of the implied meaning Eiji and Momo gave when they said that they were "so young, so young." He even looked angry towards his sempais becuase they ruined his moment with the girl....:)

Isnt that proof enough that he has feelings for her?

I just love Ryosaku fics and Fujisaku fics, and I really love defending them. It's hard to think that some people dont like reading them. They are really way cute.

I'm not trying to convince anybody here, but the truth is, they are. Sorry to all Yaoi fans out there, but, I think that Girl-boy relationships, though seemingly-boring and fully-explored is way better than yaoi ones.

I do have to ask why, if written well, yaoi is to quote mendibends 'see his precious male image twisted into something else when put up with male characters'.

But my main point is that we all seem to be trying to assume what the author means. To me, this isn't how a book should be read. Please feel free to disagree her because this is a lit crit debate that rages across the top unis. I'm not trying to convince anyone, I'm just having my say.

Ok, so to me, a book (or manga/anime in this case) is about how the reader sees it, not what the author may or may not have intended. This, I believe is the reader reponsce theory. We cannot go and ask the author what he exactly meant by each panel and even if we did, does it really matter? people with different backgrounds and life experiences see different things. I am bisexual myself, so maybe that means I will subconsciously look for homosexual undertones...

Take a book such as Brideshead Revisited. There is a lot of debate about the nature of Charles and Sebastien's relationships. Some see it as a platonic friendship, others as love or a romantic friendship. Or Achilles and Patroculs, closest friends or lovers (actually there is a lot more evidence for the lovers bit here).

But I guess the reason people write yaoi is because it is what they see. I use to be rather active in silver pair communities on LJ and I wrote that because it was what I saw (and loved) when I watched the and read PoT. In the Doctor Who fandom, I shipped Doctor/Rose, a het pairing, because it was what i saw (and loved). True there are pairings and I see and don't love, but I don't write them. And there are popular pairings I don't see, such as Fuji/Tezuka which I really really don't love...

But that is just my opinion. Feel free to tear it apart if you wish xxx

Fuji's Girl

Yes, it is all up to the readers and how they view it. When I wrote 'see his precious male image twisted into something else when put up with male characters'. I meant that I would rather keep Fuji a male who is my beloved than see him in the arms of a man. That's just me though. I love Fuji with all my heart ( talk about being a fangirl, I'm TOTALLY in love with him) and it sort of makes me sick when I think of Fuji as a gay

I know many enjoy yaoi and I dont mean to be a party pooper and spoil all yaoi fics out there with my sometimes nasty ( are they nasty? I guess...) comments about yaoi. There is nothing wrong with yaoi fics, its open to the public and well, it's alright.

The point is I just avoid yoai fics (sorry) and I would have never even read one until my classmate, who is a yaoi fan forced read one to me without my consent even. I wanted to puke after hearing what it was all about. My previous post, I guess was just a little display of what we call, um.....well I dont know...

I just wanted to state out my opinion and if there was anything wrong with it, well then I'm sorry, but my opinion is my opinion and nothing can change that.

The same as your ( I mean this generally) opinion is your opinion and nothing can change that either. People have a freedome to say what they think and feel what they think, and it is their right.

I wouldn't want to try and change your opinion, i am just glad we are having this debate because to me it is all rather fun!

I myself personally do not find your view offensive and I do not seek to criticise it as I realise your opinion is no less valid than mine and free speech is a great thing. I do however, see how some of your opinions may come across as only the tiniest bit offensive (I'm not being nasty and sarcastic here so please don't think i am). But then I guess that I actually find reading about heterosexual sex mildly gross. So really its the same thing.

I am still not a fan of hard core yaoi, like I don't particularly like hardcore yuri or het either, its just not my thing so guess if we are talking about the sexual side of it, i can fully understand. I don't think it has much to do with being homophobic or preferring het over yaoi or vica versa. Some people just plain enjoy writing and reading about sex more than other.

I guess shonen ai to me is sweet and unattainable so i like it. the way i see it, as a girl, if I want a guy I can go out and get one. If I want a girl, I can also go out and get one. But I am not a guy and therefore can never have a gay relationship with another guy. Maybe that is why most of the time, BL/yaoi appeals to me more than yuri or het...

And once again, i am really really not insulting you at all, I am really enjoying this debate, honest!!!

Fuji's Girl

Well, I'm glad your enjoying our little debate.....I haven't had this much fun either! Honestly, I am an extremely conventional person who cannot grasp the thought of um....gay relationships yet, even though a large population of my classmates are gay. I guess I'm still really mada mada dane at some things ; ). Thats why I guess when I read the topic of this forum, I thought, "Oh, I've been wondering about this too...What does make yaoi so popular now adays?", and decided to join in.

Majorly, I've never thought that people can easily accept yaoi. I really am that old-fashioned.... and I guess I could have hurt some feelings out there....so I'm sorry....its just that yaoi isnt just my style....

Oh, by the way, I like Sakuno too....( read your previous post ) Fujisaku is also a great pairing

What's wrong with it? I see no difference. Perceiving differences in genders that way is fine, but it's your opinion. I personally like some yaoi pairings. Some are cool for me, and some I don't get. Yes, I like TezuFuji. No, I don't like RyoMomo. I loooooooove RyoSaku. That's just my opinion, though.

Basically, I'm saying there's not much of a difference between the genders.

Why people write yaoi for PoT? I dunno... maybe 'cause we all like a bit of romance? I mean, if PoT had an equal amount of girls, then wouldn't there be some people shipping couples you can't really imagine? I think it all depends on your preference. There's not a lot of girls, and het gets really boring after a while; there's only so much you can write with it. Now with yaoi, it gives us a bit more freedom to write about things you can't really write with a het couple.

Personally, I like TezukaFuji, OishiEiji, InuiKaidoh, MomoRyo, and RyoSaku. ^_^ Because Sakuno isn't that annoying, she just needs to overcome her shyness.
